I thought it might be fun to give you a few riddles to figure out. These are from a game I play. I'll check back and see if any one trys to figure out the answers. I'm sure we have a vast amount of smart people here . . .

1. Sam Slug and Sid Shady were trying to snitch a few oranges from an orange grove but found them to be out of reach. Since Slug stands six fee and Shady stands five feet, Slug invited Shady to stand on his shoulders in order to reach the fruit. Shady climbed up on Slug's shoulders, but even then the fruit was just beyond Shady's grasp. Would it make any difference in reach if Slug was to stand on Shady's shoulders?

2. As Sid Shady boarded his flight to Israel, he noticed an old acquaintance at the back of the plane. He shouted a greeting to his friend by name, then knocked on the cockpit door to say hello to one of the pilots, who was also an old friend. Several moment later Shady was arrested. Why?

1. It would be 9PM. (Half way between 1PM and 1AM is 7PM, so add 2 and you get 9PM.)

2) Month. They all start with the letter O and the word Month starts with an M.

You have the first one correct. The second one appears to be that answer but is not. Try again on number 2

3. Barney Dribble is carrying a pillow case full of feathers. Hardy Pyle is carrying three pillow cases the same size as Barney's, yet Hardy's load is lighter. How can that be?

4. The bottom 3/4 of a pop bottle's total height is cylindrical in shape. The upper 1/4 of the total height is irregular in shape. The bottle is filled approximately halfway with cranberry juice. Keeping the bottle closed and using just a ruler, how can you tell what percent of the total volume of the pop bottle is filled with cranberry juice?

Number 2 technically is right though. It may not be the answer that you were looking for, but it is a correct answer.

1.  Sam Slug and Sid Shady were trying to snitch a few oranges from an orange grove...

Technically speaking yes, but pratically no.

Estimating from shoulder to head is 1 foot. To start, Shady stands on Slug's shoulders making (5-1)+6 = 10 feet. Then swapping would make (6-1)+5 = 10 feet. This of course, assuming neither one has an immensely small head and neck. In any case 10 feet would amount to rougly 3 metres, and considering orange trees grow to about 10 metres I doubt it would matter.

1. If two hours ago, it was as long after one o'clock in the afternoon as it was before one o'clock in the morning, what time would it be now?

Meaning it was 7:00 PM 2 hours ago. 9:00 PM.

QUOTE
2. Which one of the four following words does not belong in this group and why?

The letter of the first name rules Month out.
Oil is the only word that can be found inside of another word.
The rhyming words thing rules oil out because nothing else rhymes in the English language.
Orange can be 2 objects (Colour + Fruit) and the others do not.
Oil can be a noun and a verb, others cannot.
Month is a concept. Orange, oil and oriole are all physically real.

Therefore Oriole does not belong in the group, because it belongs in every other group.

Taking into account the name "Dribble" I assume Barney's pillow is weighed down by moisture? laugh.gif

If the bottle is filled only halfway, then use the formula X=πr²*D with D being the height from base to height of cranberry juice and r being the radius of the bottom of the bottle (half diameter). Then flip the bottle upside down and use the formula Y=πr²*D, with D being the height from the base to the point where the cranberry juice starts. X will be the amount of juice, and Y will be the amount of air. X+Y=Z, Z being the total capacity of the bottle. 100(Y/Z) will give you the percentage of cranberry juice.

Oil is the only one that rhymes with anything. That makes it different.

Hardy's pillow cases are empty

The bottle one is tricky. Using a ruler, measure the height of the liquid in the bottle. Then invert the bottle and measure the air space in the cylindrical part of the bottle. These two measurements added together give you the height of a regular cylinder that has the same volume as the pop bottle. Now by dividing the height of the liquid into the total height of the imaginary cylinder, you obtain the percentage of the bottle that is filled with cranberry juice. ( yeah we have a math troll, lol)

New Ones now:

1. Hardy Pyle was washing windows on a high-rise office building when he slipped and fell off a sixty foot ladder onto the concrete sidewalk below. Incredibley, he did not injure himself in any way. How was this possible?

2. Two cars made their way along the winding country road and came to an abrupt stop at the park's gate. Seven men got out of the two cars and were walking along a footpath when it began to rain. Six of the men began to walk faster to get out of the rain but the seventh man couldn't be bothered. Ironically it was the seventh man who remained dry and the other six got soaked. Since all seven men arrived at their destination together, how was this possible?

3. Captain Frank and Professor Quantum played chess. They played seven games, each won the same number of games, and there weren't any draws or stalemates. How could of this happened?

(I hope you guys are enjoying these. lol)

1. He wasn't all the way up the ladder

2. Did they arrive at exactly the same time? Or was the 7th man technically the last person, even if it was only by one second? If the 7th was the last, then its possible the rain started when the 6th man got out of the car, and moved along with that part of the group and not the 7th man. As unreal as the situation is.. lol.

3. They played more than 7 games. It never said they played exactly seven.

I doubt #2-3 are right, but they technically fit. I got most of them right without looking at other answers, but these are a lot trickier.

Also @ Keanu, for #1 in the original post it says would it make any difference in reach, not "would they be able to get the oranges." Stop trolling unless you can do it right.

Not looking at Mike's post to get answers... I have come up with...

1. He was only on the first rung of the ladder.

2. The 7th man had an umbrella and/or other rain protective gear.

3. The 7th game is still in progress.

EDIT: Oh and... Oriole and Oil are a slant rhyme, which still means that it is a rhyme. neko2.gif

Answers::

1. He was standing on the bottom rung.

2. They weren't playing each other.

3. The six men were carrying the seventh man in a coffin.

NEW ONE

1. Shadow approached Sid Shady and said, "I have reason to believe you are the man responsible for the holdup at the 'Salty Dog Tavern' two hours ago. You fit the description given by several key witnesses. They described a man who had been drinking heavily before robbing several customers and fleeing the scene." "Of course I'm drunk. I happen to be a professional wine taster and I've been plying my trade for the last five hours." Shadow studied Shady and questioned, "What time is it now?" Shady replied "It happens to be 7:30 pm." Shadow continued, "Tell me then, approximately what time did you start working?" Shady looked at his watch and replied "2:30 pm." "You're obviously lying," accused Shadow. Why?

1. Shadow approached Sid Shady and said...

Because Sid only looked at his watch AFTER Shady asked what the time was, so the only possible reason for Sid to look at his watch would be to count back 5 hours from 7:30 PM. If he was telling the truth, he would have known when his work started offhand. Counting back 5 hours required him to look at his watch, which would further suggest he was intoxicated.

Professional wine tasters don't drink the wine, they sip it and spit it out. So if he's been working for five hours (no consuming alcohol in the last 5 hours), he wouldn't be drunk in the first place.

EDIT: Maybe this should be moved to the house of random? blush.gif
