And on another note, may I ask the question why we need more council, our current council seem to cope with the work, if anything they're under worked.

I did ask members of council the same thing....

I really don't see why WG needs more council, 4 council and Elias is the most we have had for a long time, and no doubt the 2 warlords were appointed because Elias knew at that time that Abs was leaving (so this isn't really replacing abs either).

The point of the two warlord positions being awarded was in order to make the council balanced:

Aussie: Elias + Anat

GMT: Mugger84 + Abmanju

US: Kingrandy0 + Arsenalfan32

There is currently only myself operating in the GMT timezone, and as obviously seen in IRC, I am usually, during the weekdays, the only council online between 11am GMT -> 7pm GMT (or later). I am back to school again today and so I will only be on 5pm GMT -> 10pm GMT, and so we have a huge gap with no Council online smile.gif Hopefully the clan sees this need, and appoints a council who is GMT.

Remember to vote for whoever you feel will do the right job based on their previous history and work with WG, not just their application (Application is a big part, but it shouldn't be the only reason you vote for that person)

Note: This isn't directed at anyone, just a general thing to apply.

Good luck all biggrin.gif

I think Elias appointed 2 warlords because they were both great people for the warlord role, equally as good, and covered a range of timezones.

It was a good move too, we've gotten pretty far up thanks to that, and many other reasons of course.

Even though I kinda agree, I was surprised to see Council Elections so soon =P

Application for Council

Some little bits of information about me:

Name: David
RSN: 1colonel1
Birthday: May 2, 1991
Birth Place: Johannesburg, South Africa
Favorite Food: Pizza
Favorite Band: Linkin Park

1. Have you read and understood the warning?

Yes, I have read and taken notice of everything that has been said prior to my application.

2. What makes you think you can last a long term in the council?

Well, I’ll break this up into three categories; Dedication, Clan Pride, Real Life Situations.

~ Dedication ~

This is my second time in The Wilderness Guardians. My first time ended only because I was unable to play RuneScape and fell into extreme inactivity. Once I was able to play again, my first, and at the time, only goal was to re-join The Wilderness Guardians. I think that says a lot about how much I want to be here.

I’ve watched this clan change over the many years it has been alive. I’ve watched many, many Council members come and go. I know what they had to go through, and despite all that I still want to apply. I saw the beatings they took, and I still want to apply. I saw how heartbroken and frustrated they became - I still want to apply. This is my second time applying for this position, and I just recently applied for Event Leader. The fact that I take advantage of each opportunity that I’m given shows that I’m dedicated to this clan. I want to do something for this clan.

The Wilderness Guardians was the first big clan I joined, and so far the only big clan I’ve ever been in. The only clan I’ve ever thought of being in. The only clan I’ve ever seen myself being in.

I do what I can for this clan. Be it stay up late for events, drop what I’m doing for events, do clan related things such as training or moneymaking before thinking about my own goals.

Sometimes I turn down doing things with friends in my real life to do things with this clan, which may not sound like much but I think it holds some meaning. It shows that I don’t treat this clan like a simple gathering of “online friends,” but that it actually means something to me. That it’s high on my list of “important things.”

~ Clan Pride ~

Well, just to put things simply, I love being a Guardian. I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. But that, for me, isn’t enough because I know that I can do more.

My pride for this clan seeps into the things that I do for this clan, and I think that will help me last - I want to do this. Not for the glory, or the power, or the cool orange name. I want to do this for The Wilderness Guardians.

I come up with ideas that I think can help. Yes, they might be a bit controversial, and unorthodox at first glance, but I NEVER say anything is set in stone. I am always open to suggestions.

I want this clan to be the best that it can be, and I know we have a lot of potential. I know that what we’re capable of and what is out of reach right now. I also know that I can build that ladder that can help us reach those goals that are, as of now, just at the tip of our fingertips. That makes me believe I can last, because I have the vision and the means, and I don’t want them to go to waste.

~ Real Life Situations ~

Well, I’ve had an interesting life. I think it has given me the ability to do this job, and stick with it.

I’ve dealt with stress, and heavy workloads. Anyone who has applied to college can vouch for me that the application process is incredibly stressful, more-so than any point in grade school. But that is something everyone goes through.

I believe I can last because when I want to do something, I do it, and I do it well.

When I was in 10th grade and living in Africa, I wrote an article (article can be found here, it isn’t that long). I did this in my free time. I did this because I wanted to, and got published. I can handle the work.

3. Is there anything coming up in the next 6 months that could make you highly inactive?

I will be graduating from high school in late May, and will be on vacation and getting ready for college, but in between all that I will be staying with relatives for weeks at a time with internet access meaning I’ll still be active. At a very least I should have e-mail and forum access so I would be able to do most of the things required of me besides actually playing.

4. Why are you applying for council?

This clan does so much for its members. I’m applying because throughout all my time in this wonderful clan, I’ve been on the receiving end of this clan, now I want to be on the giving end. It’s the truth. I’ve been here for so long, I want to do something for this clan. I want to be able to say that after my time, I did something to help the clan out. Make the clan a better place. A more accommodating place.

I want to put the ideas I have to good use. I believe that the Council position will allow me to really show what I can do for this clan. Not to say that members don’t have the ability, it’s just that Council has a bigger impact and I want to have an impact on this clan.

I know I am capable, and I want to prove myself. I want to, more than anything, show my gratitude to this great clan, and all of its members, old and new. I want to represent this clan in a way I’ve never represented it before because I believe I’ll do it exceptionally well. I know I’ll do it exceptionally well.

5. What does WG need most and what will you do as a council member?

I believe that right now this clan needs structure the most. This however comes in two forms, both of which I will address; discipline and unity.

~ Discipline ~

Right now, this clan is pretty relaxed in how we deal with “trouble makers.” I’m not trying to say I’ll be strict and not let us have any fun, but I am saying that I wouldn’t tolerate as many of the excuses we allow. I wouldn’t be as relaxed when it came to skipping events or leaving events early. I would try to enforce rules regarding respect towards leaders when possible, but obviously this would be a case by case thing since we have a good enough community that our leaders aren’t likely to take childish comments harshly.

:: Enforcement ::

When I say strict, I don’t mean high. I mean I would take the requirements we have now, but enforce them. We have so many “mandatory” things, but how often is someone punished for not obeying?

We have very open ended rules that have multiple loopholes. “But this says…” and “It doesn’t say I have to…” won’t be treated with as much validity. I would make sure things are laid out in a straightforward manner so not as many rules could be abused. This ties into things like activity.

:: Discrepancies ::

I would do more in the area of identifying and addressing what is and is not a qualification for a warn level, or verbal warning. To often we have people taking things the wrong way, and obviously that will happen to everyone, but there are things which are blatantly jokes and others which are obvious attacks. I would crack down on the childish arguments and approach solving them by means of mutual agreement and talking it out between the two parties rather than me being a mediator and messenger. I would make the two members talk to each other to identify the problem and help them come to a reasonable result, rather than me just hand out some punishment.

I would treat all people equally. No Guardian will have a more harsh punishment than a Tertiary for the same offense. Because of this, I’ll be treating everyone like adults. Everyone would have my utmost respect.

~ Unity ~

This is a touchy subject, but I think it needs to be addressed. I know we haven’t had any outbreaks of skilling vs. warring in a while, and that is great.

We’re still pretty divided in terms of “weight” given to each type of event. We currently stress the importance of wars and PKRIs, but say nothing about the importance of our other events. Sure they don’t get us ranks or make the clan more known, but it is something we boast. We are one of the few clans to offer a home to both combat and non-combat - let’s make it a fantastic home.

I’ve already posted one idea of mine that I think, if modified properly, could be a move in the right direction.

I would personally think of things to incorporate both realms of the clan so that it’s not just “some boring skill event,” or “some boring tanking practice,” but instead a new type of event that mixes the two together.

:: Joint Events ::

I would make it a priority to combine more combat and non-combat events. I would make sure both extremes of the spectrum that is this clan are represented, not only by individual events, but by combined events. Skilling events that incorporate binding or tanking skills. Things like that would become commonplace.

I would also look to have more joint events with our allies. Possibly branch out to some other clans to get our name out there.

:: Individual Members ::

I know this is a subtopic on unity and I’m talking about individual members and it seems very contradictory. What I mean is integrate the regular members with the staff. Instead of having event leaders take charge of every single event, let them set it up and then have a regular member take charge. Let them call when to go, when to stop, when to move to the next location and to say what is going to happen.

Obviously members could do that by hosting their own events, but maybe this could provide practice for some people that just aren’t sure yet if they have what it takes? This way an Event Leader would be there to guide them.

Embedded in this area would be a move towards more relations between the staff and the members. Things like one on one talks about how the clan is going, personal opinions and things on your mind. I would like for this clan to be a place where you can unburden yourself, at least to me. I would be very open to listening and offering advice and would encourage people to come forth. As a result, I would go out of my way to initiate conversations with all sorts of members.

6. What puts you above other people applying for council?

I believe my ability to cope with stress, and my leadership roles in my real life put me above the other people applying for this position.

~ Coping with Stress ~

I’ve dealt with stress all my life. I’ve moved seven times over the course of my life, to seven different countries on three different continents. That’s a lot of moving, and let me tell you, moving is incredibly stressful. But that’s small.

One particular event really stands out, and I think shows how well I can cope with stress. When I was in 11th grade, or last year, the country I was living in fell into civil unrest. The streets of Yaounde, the capitol of Cameroon were filled with riots, markets were being burned down and school was closed. During that time, instead of just sitting around and waiting for things to calm down I volunteered with the US Embassy (the place where my dad worked at the time). I was told to manage the Crisis Task Force Database, which was basically a list of all Americans in the country and to keep track of whether or not they were accounted for. Big stuff for a Junior I’d say. I didn’t do much talking on the phone, because I didn’t have the training required, and I was just a kid, but when the time came, I stepped up. I had to re-confirm a name, which had been wrongly marked as accounted for. It doesn’t sound stressful, talking on a phone, but when you’re the representative to that single person for an entire Embassy it’s quite a weight to carry, but I did it. I think this parallels to the Council position - representing something that is bigger than yourself, and that is exactly what I did when it was needed, and I succeeded.

I think that adequately shows my ability to handle stress, and that I could deal with the stresses of this position. Not to say that it would be easy, but I would be able to do it.

~ Leadership in my Life ~

I’ve never held a position in student government, I’ve never been president of a club, or even team captain of a sports team. What I have done is taken the initiative. I always take the initiative.

Again, while living in Africa I helped start up a weekly Ultimate Frisbee match for the Embassy community. Nothing huge, but still something that I helped put into motion. Something I helped get started and kept going.

I organized a weekly visit to an orphanage while living in Africa as well. Each Sunday, me and some friends would go and just interact with the children. I initiated it.

During one week of school this year, we had to do some work with disabled children - my group was Down Syndrome. During the final day, after the entire group had been observed by the teacher chaperones, I was the chosen student to take on the leadership position. I had to make sure all the other smaller groups within our big group were on track. That they had all their materials and that their events went well. I had to make sure every single guest was engaged and not left out.

These are the main things I think show my leadership qualities. I could talk about how I take charge in group projects for school, but I think many of us do that anyway.

When I worked at the Embassy for the summer between 10th and 11th grade, I alone was tasked with creating and maintaing a archive of documents for the entire Embassy. Not only that, I was also tasked with writing up brief biographies of all the people in the section I was working in and compiling a small booklet for the incoming Ambassador.

These qualify me for the Council position because I know how to lead. I would apply all my abilities; logical thinking, management, good work ethic, teamwork and taking the initiative to this position.

:: Logical Thinking ::

I would approach all situations with an open mind. I would make sure to hear both sides of a situation and act accordingly, regardless of my personal opinions. If the idea is solid, and results could be attained, then I would be all for it. I would follow things step by step so no mistakes would be made to put the clan at risk.

:: Management ::

I would make sure things get done, both in terms of the clan, and for me personally. I would make sure to be on top of all my duties, but also just be sure to check in with the clan every once in a while. Check on morale, and where the clan feels we need to work. Find all that out and then work on it immediately.

:: Good Work Ethic ::

I would make sure everything I would do would be of high quality. This can be seen by all my previous posts. I always put large amounts of time and effort into the things I do, no matter how simple.

:: Teamwork ::

I would work with everyone. I would gather a range of opinions, from tertiaries, and regular guardians and even trial guardians. I will not restrict my judgement to just my own feelings but form an opinion based on the things the rest of the clan has to say.

:: Taking the Initiative ::

I would never be afraid to stick my neck out. I know nothing can be perfect, no matter how much planning goes into something, there can always be a problem. If something isn’t at it’s final stages, but seems like a good idea, I’ll be the one to test it out and see how it would really work. I wouldn’t be afraid to take those kinds of risks. This relates mostly to suggestions by regular members. If I see something that I think is very good, and other people agree I would talk it over with the Council and then implement it for a trial period, nothing permanent. Then monitor its success and then decide whether or not it was worth spending time tweaking.

7. What is your greatest weakness in terms of being a leader?

I’m trying to get a better handle on it, and I’m really improving. I’m learning how to stay in a situation and maintain my cool, and not have to always take myself out and “take a breather.” I’ve become better at controlling myself while angry in a tense situation.

My greatest weakness as a leader is my temper. I have a tendency to lose it sometimes. Not often, but when I do I can say some pretty nasty things. I can get upset fairly easily and I think that can sometimes affect my decisions.

However, I vow to take the necessary actions to control my anger so that this clan doesn't have to be inconvenienced by it. I will continue to train myself to contain my emotions when something is annoying, or frustrating me. Since it is the internet, it will be a lot easier, but I just want you to know that I won’t stop trying to better myself.

8. Is there anything else you would like to say?

First off, I’d like to say good luck to all other applicants; George, Lee, and Rachel.

I know I tend to go against the current when it comes to ideas and such, but I ask you to think about this: Would it be better if I just went with everything? Would it be better if I just said “Yes, 100%,” to every decision? In which case no other point of view would be expressed, and no flaws would be pointed out. I ask you to keep in mind I play devil’s advocate because without that point of view, all ideas appear perfect.

Also, if I’m elected, I will to the best of my ability, keep you all informed of what’s going on. I’ll let you know what’s on my mind and what kinds of things we’d be looking at. Obviously I wouldn’t reveal everything, but I’d like to include the clan more.

I’m not based in the best timezone for this clan, but I don’t think that should be the deciding factor. We’ve already shown as a clan, that the best person gets the position, not the one that fills in the most gaps. I might not be able to make every war, but I’d be open to all sorts of communication; e-mail, forum PM, Skype chat, MSN, IRC, TS, anything.

I don’t have previous experience with any of the Mod or Admin CP, but believe I could learn them quickly. I pick up on things pretty easily.

I ask you, the voters, to do this: Vote for the best candidate. This is your time to make a big decision. Your time to have a say. When you go to cast your vote, don’t just vote for your friends however tempting it may be. Vote for the right person, because if he, or she, is elected this clan will most definitely go places.

9. Do you agree to provide the council with two weeks notice if you wish to resign?

Yes, I agree to provide the council, and the entirety of the clan with two weeks notice if I wish to resign.

I won't openly post my word count, but if you, or anyone else is curious feel free to PM me on the forums or in the IRC and I'll give you the figure.

I would only be counting the large chunks of text, or any important subtopic. Question 3, 9, 1 won't be included and lines where I say I'll be dividing my answer into sections won't be included either.

...if you're that curious.

Mugger, I don't know who you think you are but you have no right whatsoever to tell people who can or can't run for Council.  As long as they meet the requirements to do so, that's all that matters.  Now on to your other issue...I don't think it's up to you to try and persuade the clan who to vote for by saying we need a GMT Council Member because in all honesty, the only one we got now sucks. Who's to say the next GMT person won't be the same way?

I think the clan needs to decide who would do the most for this clan in a POSITIVE way.  In all honesty, we have some Council Members who are using this as some sort of power trip and it's having a negative impact and dividing the clan.

Why would Mugger kick Rick for stating his mind?

I agree Jenny, Muggers wouldn't want to break a basic WG rule. Which states we are allowed to disagree with him. It would not be a fair thing to do.

Mike, alot of times Rick has very valid points if you really read what he writes.

Thank you Garrett and Dallar.

is the day you have stopped leading them.
They have either lost confidence that you can help them
or concluded that you do not care.
Either case is a failure of leadership.”
