I'm fed up of seeing excuses like "omg he said something racist" and "I'm staff you can't say that to me!" being used to hand out warn levels like candy.

For a start, theres a huge difference between being racist and making a joke. Those involved in the conversation know this. The whole point in a joke is for one group to make fun of an allegedly inferior group and the situations that arise. That's comedy. That's life.

Secondly, if i hear "Abusive towards a member of staff" as an excuse for warning anyone else I'll kick off. Seriously. Swearing at a staff member means jack shit. They aren't special, they don't get special treatment, we all get sworn at from time to time. Deal with it or get off the internet.

How often do you members see getting warned for telling one another to gtfo? It's rare. In fact action is only taken if one of the individuals is being attacked on a personal level and the victim PMs a council member. Even then we get told to "man up and deal with our problems". As I have been in the past.

I propose that if nobody complains then leaders can shove their excuse to flex their e-muscles.

Seriously, how many times do you see people complaining about language? Once in a blue moon. Yet leaders pick up on it and issue warn levels just because they can. Over the years I've seen this a lot. Tends to be more common with new council members.

I want freedom of speech in IRC. Because to be quite honest nobody is offended by it. How the hell can you note our clan allows swearing, but then warn members for abusive language. Get real.

If you're offended by words on your computer screen then go and join another clan. If you've ever searched the internet for porn (who hasn't? we all have. thats why I'm using this example), you have no right to complain about the content on your screen when connected to IRC.

i agree that swearing shouldnt warrant a warning level. but you have to draw the line somewhere, when someones not joking and they are actually being malicious, then its time to step in.

Exactly. At which point if someone is being victimized they can PM a leader in confidence that they will remain anonymous. The abusive member can then be dealt with.

You're right to a certain extent. All sorts of 'jokes' should have limits, and honestly they shouldn't differ whether they were targeted at members or at the staff.

Bullshit steve.
I won't tolerate abuse towards any member.
Staff themselves are members of this clan.
Any abuse is not tolerated, but if members want to keep it secret then they can and they will continue to suffer.

An epic +1 to this topic, it's about time leaders stop handing out warn levels like there's no tommorow.

I agree with you somewhat. I can say that most staff are used to abuse, but I haven't seen the evidence of offense to a staff member so I can't really judge without knowing the extent of what was said.

I personally get abused many times for being Asian. I guess this could account for "abuse towards staff," but I have never given a warning level for it. Its honestly not serious enough, and im not bothered enough by it. However, if it was EXTREMELY disrespectful, I would. By extreme, I would mean very extreme.

I have personally never given out a warn level unless it was for something serious. It would have to be pretty extreme.

I agree. Abusive language should be allowed, but when things get uncomfortable for others, it can be restricted. Racist jokes are on the line for me, but unless its extreme disrespect or meant to be extremely offensive to a person on purpose, then thats where I draw the line.

To staff members: Unless its SERIOUSLY like outrageously offensive, then it really shouldnt deserve a warn level. If they're like "wow...you suck.." then thats tolerable. I can agree with steve that I have seen some people abuse their powers, and some people use their powers to be biased against others. I'm not saying im not biased, but I would never use my powers AGAINST someone im biased against.

Usually, the members who are really abusive will be the end of themselves in WG.

Rushed post, try to make sence of it

Another recurring argument, lol. I remember this coming up back on Z6; legislated accountability has never been one of our strong points. There should be some sort of counter-control whenever a warning level is handed out though, even if it is warranted.

(First to Saad: Didn't realize you are Asian. But then it should matter either. wub.gif )

I usually say something if I think the jokes or language are getting offensive. Doesn't mean I think they warrant a warn level. When your like family in the clan, I think telling each other is fine. Sometimes saying a cuss to each other in a joke is fine. I say *licks* to people and not once has anyone complained.

Today I saw Mike/Raging say something Racist in the public lobby to Joel, but really it was a joke I think. Jess just asked him to stop it in main channel. I don't know where most of the problems about racist is coming from, I very rarely see anything like that unless it is a joke.

I will refrain from saying anything about staff and rudeness. (Looks at my warn level. dface-ani.gif )
