I'm no noob with computers, but this one is just illuding me.

Programs keep crashing completely randomly. With the common well-known error message "blah blah encountered an error and needs to close".

user posted image

This tends to be happening at [u]random]/u] with programs like MSN, Firefox, Skype, SK and so forth. After crashing the first time, it immediately crashes when I re-open. Java also crashes at random while playing RS. Causing the game to crash. Meaning i have to reload rs.

I've tried cleaning the registry, re-installing programs, virus scanning, rebooting and a system restore to a month ago. None have been affective.

Any suggestions?

At this point I'd call it an all out windows fail. You may just have to suck it up and backup what files you want to keep and reinstall windows from scratch.

Do any non-internet related programs crash or is it just those?

I'm going to have to go with this. If you did all that you mentioned, theres not much left but to reformat.

Reformatting is good, anyways. If you haven't reformatted for at least 6 months, its time you did so. Unfortunately not everyone has an external hard drive or a large flash drive, so it makes backing up files difficult. But if you can easily back up important files, its worth reformatting every so often, even when you don't have any issues in Windows.

There are two (maybe three) solutions that you haven't tried that could fix your problem (if you are running XP) and do not involve reformatting

the first is the simplest (and works on all versions of Windows):
Boot into Safe Mode
Open Command Prompt
Run the following command:
CODE
sfc /scannow

If that doesn't fix your problem then try this:
If you are running XP and have an XP disk with SP2 or SP3 included then you can use a function called a "repair install" (Procedure for Vista is completely different) it leaves all your files and programs in place but replaces all windows files
Instructions: Perform a Repair Installation

If you don't yet have SP3 installed you can try installing SP3, it replaces enough system files that it might help you but I would hold off on trying this until you have tried the other two.

If neither of these solutions work then I suppose that a reinstall is your only solution

Still, I don't understand why people always jump to the conclusion that a reformat is the only option without first trying all the alternatives (I'm looking at you Georgio) tongue.gif

Edit: Oh, and when you get the option to send an error report, please do send it, Microsoft does get useful information from them.

1) Holy shit it's ANTHONY!!!!!!!

2) Because I don't know alot of details about the problem, so I can't go looking on google for a possible fix. Even if I did find one, I don't know how deep someone is willing to go into the OS to solve a problem. Usually I'll go to the ends of google (which I still haven't found) to solve a problem. I finally fixed my crashing video card drivers by google searching everything.

3) I'm generally kinda lazy and when I was running Ubuntu, it was not uncommon for me to just put in 10 minutes to reinstall the OS to undo whatever mess I made in the shell trying to fix a bug. So I just kinda got used to just reinstalling when things became unfixable. Unless it was a hardware problem then no matter how many times you reinstall the software, it's not going to go away.

Now thats something I didn't think of, it could be a hardware problem.
If it is a hardware problem it would most likely be RAM going bad, if that is the case then every time a program attempted to write to that bit of ram it could cause it to crash. There is a tool included with Windows Vista that will check the RAM, but I don't think its included in XP... Perhaps there is a free 3rd party Memory diagnostic tool...

I tried running Ubuntu for a bit, but I had nothing but problems with my Touch Screen, I keep trying with every new version but, at least for now, Windows 7 is running perfectly for me (I got into the MS Connect private beta program again like I did for Vista, not through the public beta tongue.gif

And yes, I'm back, at least for awhile. Though the number of people I recognize has taken a sharp dip and I don't recognize any of the council :S

This sounds highly possible.
Right now I have 2 sticks of RAM installed. A 512 and a 256, by different manufacturers. My machine came with just 256 despite it's 2.91 gig Pentium 4 processor. Since it was so cheap I got this and just bought the extra memory. I'll try removing the 256 stick first, If that doesn't work I'll swap it with the 512. Both of them can't have the same error surely.

No, they wouldn't likely have the same error.
Honestly, I considered bad ram the less likely issue, bad ram usually presents its self with a system wide crash (a BSOD) and not with application crashes. though that doesn't mean its impossible.

I still recommend an sfc /scannow or a repair install

I'll try them if this doesn't help.
I don't have my Windows disk and have a 2 gig/month download limit so I can't just pirate a copy. Any suggestions?

So you ran sfc from safe mode and it came up with nothing
You checked your ram, and nothing
You tried reinstalling the affected program and nothing
You tried a System Restore and nothing

Well then... I have one more idea and one old idea.

You mentioned that you used a Virus Scanner, which one? Its possible that the one you used may have missed a problem that another might catch, the problem might also be Spy/Adware which could be removed by other (free) programs

Again, my other recommendation is, try to borrow an XP disk from someone and do the repair install.
or if that doesn't work do a clean install starting over from scratch.

The oddest part of this whole thing is that (as far as you have said) you haven't gotten a single BlueScreen, if you had, it might just be easier to diagnose this as we would have something concrete to work from rather than just random program crashes.

And what do you mean "its getting worse"? Crashing more often? More things crashing? Total system failure? Something Else?

There is one other possibility, though it is definitely the worst, some random hardware failure is occurring that I couldn't pin down without considerable work and much more information.

It's not just Java that does it, so why would he want to do that?
