Grammar, Spelling, and "1337" Speak., A rant

This is a rant, and very unlikely to change anything.

I just feel like getting it off my chest.

The terrible grammar and spelling that I need to wade through on a daily basis. I hate having to think to read all of the "shortened" "cool" chat that people post on a daily basis. A genuine mistake or two is all right, but purposely mis-spelling things is annoying. On Runescape, I can understand to a certain extend, the chat boxes are really small. On IRC, and on the forums, there is no such excuse. Please spell things correctly.

/End rant.

Among other things, yes.

I'm ESL, and I can speak and type better than most people who just don't care.

I know you want to have proper grammar and such like that, but around here a very popular way of talking is "m00se spek". Just something that is going to happen, regardless if you want it to change or not. I suppose get used to it.

Most of the people who use "m00se spek" can speak with proper grammar, but it is just no fun for them. hash.png

"Why do mods always talk in proper sentences?"

Its actually something I get asked reasonably often while talking publicly or in clan chats.

My point is, where an RS related clan and we do have a fair few members who are here not to type essays but to just have fun and play around, I guess talking in a non-serious manner is one of the ways they do that. Its pretty hard to expect people who are playing a game mainly focused at children/teenagers to be serious all the time, and along with that, to type in proper sentences/grammar all the time as well.

Forums *should* in my view have less of it than IRC/In game, but to eradicate it from everywhere is perhaps a little too much to ask?

I agree with you, Olivier1o1. I for one think we should ban '1337-speak' from the forums. I also think that attempts should be made spelling wise; Almost everyone here uses Firefox - which has a nice built-in spell-check.

Grammar, we can't be *too* tough on that due to people who don't speak English natively(Though, to be fair, I have seen a number of people for whom English is a second(or third) language who speak it better than most natives).

I think that once we start getting people to capitalize the first letter of every sentence, add proper punctuation, and don't use 1337-speak, the rest of the problem will disappear.

IRC is different, and I think that we should allow a bit more there, although in #wg_lobby at least, we should all be making an attempt - I mean we *do* want to make a good impression on potential members, don't we?

I would be willing to figure out and implement some auto-filters which prevent common problems(say prevent you from posting if it sees any instances of ' i '), but unless we get approval from some council members, I know a certain portion of members are going to be up in arms. And I don't particularly want to fight with the Council on this.

For the grammar point, I'm not hoping or expecting perfect grammar, just not a complete mangling of the english language to the point where the sentance is unrecognizable.

As I said, on game, and IRC, ok, fine, I can understand it to a certain extent. Typing funny to be funny I don't have a problem with either, it's when people do it in a place where they are supposed to be serious is it a problem.

As I also mentioned, I don't expect much, if anything to change, it's simply a rant of mine, getting it off my chest.

And ya, Evil, it's interesting about that =) It's not only Runescape that mod's speak and type properly, it's all games O_O

^ I agree with that

People have different ways of typing, we can all have a bit of tolerance. Even I sometimes use 'u' and 'ur' occasionly. As long as its not in excess, it isn't a huge deal.

I know why I am particularily careful about my spelling and grammar when talking in RS is that mods in general get ALLOT of attention because of that little silver crown beside their name, sadly its fairly often not positive.

The other day someone hassled me because I didnt use a '.' at the end of a sentence in RS, seriously.

I totally agree with you on this issue, 100%.

I'm not at the point where I'm turned away from the forums or a particular thread because it's filled with the 1337-speak, but it's annoying to say the least.

Another pet peeve of mine is when people are TRYING to use correct grammar and make a mistake - not an insult or anything, it's just annoying and something I spot very easily because my dad has basically ingrained certain things about grammar into my head.

What I mean is:

You're/Your:

Your funny. - This person is in possession of funny?
You're name is? - You are name is?

Where/Were/We're

Where doing this. - We're doing this where? Where are we doing this?
Were is it? - Where is it?

And another one that particularly annoys me is the misuse of the word I and me.

Jim and me went to the park. - Jim and I went to the park.
- Simple way to tell is to just drop the other person of and see if it makes sense as it is. (Me went to the park.) If it does, it's fine. If it doesn't, change it. (I went to the park. - YAY!)

Thanks for making this topic...I needed to get this off my chest as well.
