Hi,

So I used my laptop today to do some work.
I then left it turned on with programs, microsoft word open etc and went off to watch TV.
I came back an hour later aprox....
I came back on and saw that my computer clock was frozen at a time 45 minutes earlier and that my whole laptop was frozen.... I couldn't do anything, waited for a bit... then eventually held down the power button to switch my laptop off.

I then tried to restart it and the power light came on... but that was it... I was faced with a black screen, none of the start-up lights came on, the caps lock light wouldn't come up when I tried, the laptop was on... but it wasn't booting up correctly.... the fan was working fine etc.

I think perhaps that the laptop *may* have overheated.. never happened to me before, but apparently it happens a lot.
I read somewhere that if the laptop does go over its core temperature, it will shut itself down to prevent damage to the motherboard....

Anyway I left it for 2 hours... it still won't come back on... is it still hot (not to the touch on the outside, but perhaps inside)

WHAT DO I DO??? Is it due to overheating?
HALP NO LAPTOP = NO WG neko2.gif

When that happened to me, it was because the fan had become blocked which caused the laptop to overheat and ultimately the processor to burn out. So you may want to check that your fan is in working order and your processor hasn't melted. Seek professional help.

I sought professional help and they said the processor had died a horrible deatth neko2.gif
So it would cost aprox. £230 pounds to fix everything.

So I bought a new laptop... I'M TYPING ON IT NOW, OMG IT'S SO EPIC MUCH!!
Cost me um.... £449

It's a: Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC, it runs on Vista
AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-72
4GB Installed Memory

The Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G

So yah that's um like it um neko2.gif

Yea, that isn't exactly a -great- laptop, but it will definitely do fine, especially for RS. The only two things I see are that you only have a dual-core CPU; These days, you want a quad-core. Graphics wise, its hard to get something great in a laptop, and well, it could be worse. Just don't plan to run Crysis at max detail on it.

I know it's not amazing.... but I don't need it to be amazing, i wasn't prepared to spend an extra £300-500 to get an amazing one.
I don't need it.

All I need it for is scape, internetz, storage of music + pics/films/vids + school work ohmy.gif

No huge fan of Compaq but seriously a duo core and a GeForce 8 series video card @ £449 is fucking sweet for that money blink.gif

Actually it's average but hey, atleast I was right about the dead processor smile.gif

Quad core in a laptop Robbie?

You'll burn your lap with the heat that comes off those things.

You really don't need alot of power for average applications. I was considering getting one of those little netbooks just to have around and then maybe a desktop if I needed power. I've decided I only really benefit greatly from having huge amounts of processing power when I'm doing video conversion.

My 2GHz core 2 duo laptop runs at full tilt for 24 hours to re-encode a 2 hour length of blu ray video. My buddy's i7 takes about 8 hours to do the same work with all 8 threads maxed out.

I hover over the battery and it just tells me my current power plan and that it's charging on 100% neko2.gif
I've clicked on it and looked through all the help topics on it.
All I want is a rough estimation of aprox. how long this battery will last off charge sad.gif

Having the power cord unplugged when you do that should help. It can't tell you how long it will last if you've got it plugged in, lol neko2.gif

ok gorge, 3 simple steps to reparation

1) make sure ur pc's power is off and open it

2) Look for the thing that causes the problem

3) now carefully look if you can get it out and RIP IT OUT. Use a hammer to smash it and thell the pc store it was like that when when u got it. if you dont get a new one, go nd rob the place

Lmao @ Ludo

Gorge your battery life depends on what exactly you're doing. My old laptop lasted 3-4 hours roughly doing simple apps like Word, IE, etc. but playing something like Stronghold it lasted rougly 30-40 minutes on battery.

Needless to say it was shite.

To check how much battery you have left you need to right click the battery icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen and there should be an option i think....

Or try hovering your mouse over it WHILE IT IS UNPLUGGED
That's how i check the battery on my laptop which runs Vista smile.gif
