Pissed off at the help for mac os topic being bumped repeatedly so starting a new one.

I have computer A, computer B, and a Windows XP Home Edition installation CD. Computer A I am on now, which I used the CD for once. Computer B has a blank hard drive which I want to install XP on for my sister.

According to my dad: An installation CD for an OS can be used on up to 3 computers.

According to Alex, a friend of mine on the same IT course: An installation CD can be used multiple times on multiple hard drives, as long as the installation is done on the same BIOS.

So, first I tried installing the OS onto computer B (Dad's method). It did not work, because it said it was not a valid windows CD. Then, I removed the hard drive from computer B and stuck it in A, and tried to install it from there (Alex's method). Same thing happened.

The CD itself is fine because I JUST set up computer A with it. So really... what's the real deal with installing an OS multiple times? Should I just torrent one?

Your CD could only be licensed to one computer.

Your CD could only be licensed to one computer.

So I can't just install it and use some keygen to get a serial?

There are two types of operating systems

The original and the OEM

If you have OEM it means you can only have one installation. The original allows you to install up to 3 different OS's smile.gif

I bet you've got yourself an OEM version

I see nothing about OEM... says do not make illegal copies of this disk but I would have thought that was obvious neko2.gif

Dunno much about installing XP. That has never been a problem with me, as by the point I *really* got into computers, XP was already installed on my machines.

What -key- are you using to install? thats the important part. The disk can be used any number of times, but its the key that can be used only X times.

Ok the key is the one on the booklet for the installation CD. It's been used twice - once for the original installation and once for the reinstallation.

Well, lets see. So long as the key is the one that came with the CD, it ought to work(Windows XP has a variety of versions, and some keys only work some CD versions).
If its an OEM version(it should say somewhere on it), it may only be installable on the motherboard/machine that you got it with(say a Dell motherboard).
Otherwise... It certainly ought to install, though once you get windows installed and it asks you to "activate" it, you may run into problems if MS thinks its been used too many times.
