For those of you willing to take the plunge, I am offering free tech support.
Why would you use Linux?
There are many reasons, amongst them being that Linux versions in general are Free, It tends to have great hardware support, especially for older hardware that may not be supported well in Vista or 7.
Linux in general is extremely customizable, and can be easily modified to do whatever you want.

Want to learn more? Go ahead and download a LiveCD of Linux Mint Here, and burn it to a CD.
A LiveCD will let you try out the operating system by booting it directly off the CD.
This means that you can try things out(a bit slower than usual) without needing to install -anything-!

Go ahead. It can't hurt. And, even if you decide to keep using windows, when Windows inevitably breaks and you can't boot your PC any more... stick the CD in the drive, and you can use your computer again!

I still have Kubuntu set up on my computer from when we worked together on it. I don't use it though. I have tried playing around with it, but it doesn't appeal to me.

One of my main issues with it is the launcher. I like the Windows Start Menu. The Launcher puts everything into catagories, when I want to view everything at once. Any way to change that?

One thing you can do:
1. Unlock widgets(right-click on the desktop> Unlock Widgets).
2. Right-click on the K-menu, "Switch to classic menu style".
That menu is entirely your pre-XP-style start menu. However, the applications are orginized a bit differently, into the same sort of categories, instead of individual folders for each application.
If you want to reorganize things to your liking, simply run 'kmenuedit'(either alt+f2, or in a terminal).

Personally, I found that the normal KDE menu -is- a bit clumsy to navigate manually... but -easy- to navigate by simply search-typing. (1 click on the k-button, type a few letters, click the app you want).

There is also Lancelot, but its more of a W7/Vista style "advanced" menu-system; you can add one of those after unlocking the widgets by right-clicking on the tray plasma icon(right corner) > add widgets, and selecting lancelot from the list.

Do remember that almost anything can be configured a fair bit; but its up to you to make it look how you want it.

Ubuntu or KUbuntu?

I'm kind of a fan of KUbuntu's layout but I'm familiar with both. Is there any obvious advantage to one over the other?

The underlaying OS itself is exactly the same.
The only difference is the GUI interface("desktop environment") and some of the default programs.
Actually, you have three choices:
1. Ubuntu, with the Gnome desktop
2. Kubuntu, with the KDE desktop
3. Xubuntu with the XFCE desktop.
Now, when you download a CD/DVD of any of those, you end up with the Ubuntu back-end, and the desktop environment that you chose.
Once you install it, you can install one or more of the other environments, and choose which you want to use at login time.

You can install them by running "sudo apt-get install (k/x/)ubuntu-desktop".

Advantage wise, not much either way. KDE is a bit shinier, but most of the tutorials are written for Gnome(though its not hard to adapt them, or look for KDE tutorials).
XFCE is Gnome-based and just presents a bit simpler/cleaner environment to the user.

To those that are on Linux:

I just found an article to set an updating picture of a satellite image of Earth as your wallpaper.

For those that are not on Linux:

Here is the site with the image. It is extremely cool to look at throughout the day and see the dawn vs. dusk and stuff.

Problem.

Went to install Ubuntu 10.04 but when the installer is supposed to go to display the Ubuntu image, all I get is a greenish looking screen. I believe it is my GPU not being detected.

I have a GeForce 8600GTM card in a Dell Vostro 1500 and it hasn't given me any trouble with previous versions of Ubuntu.

I tried both the 32bit and 64bit releases, on a USB or on a CD it's the same result.

I haven't been able to find anything on Google since I don't really know the terms I should be searching for this mysterious greenish screen.

The Fix:

Apparently there's a problem in the boot code. This page has the work around that I used.

Took the plunge, formatted my hard drive and installed Ubuntu 10.10.

So far I'm liking it but it seems like it's going to take some getting used to just like anything else.
