This is a general warning topic. I have a MSN account, and a number of people added on as friends that I haven't talked to in a long time. Most of these people are or were WG(and friends) at some time in the past.
These days, I hardly use MSN, and so when someone messages me, it usually means someone wants my help with something, often scripting related.

And so when I saw Sabre Treky apparently messaging me, I was expecting something along the lines of "I need your help with this forum script":
QUOTE

(2010-08-09 02:47:56) [email protected]: hi are you there?
(2010-08-09 02:48:00) [email protected]: Yea
(2010-08-09 02:48:07) [email protected]: I just took an IQ quiz

Wait a minute, I thought, you are PMing me, out of the blue, to tell me you took an IQ quiz?
QUOTE

(2010-08-09 02:48:21) [email protected]: Alrighy
(2010-08-09 02:48:31) [email protected]: I was smarter than I am! I scored 111

Ok, perhaps hes wondering if there is something wrong with the script...
QUOTE

(2010-08-09 02:48:45) [email protected]: If its an online quiz...
(2010-08-09 02:49:05) [email protected]: you should try if you can do better than me, http://iqscoretest8.com/?test=4ebmn3c13

RED FLAG!
QUOTE

(2010-08-09 02:49:31) [email protected]: Are you a bot?
(2010-08-09 02:49:41) [email protected]: im not a bot silly, its me
(2010-08-09 02:50:54) [email protected]: In that case, you can tell me what runescape combat level you are
(2010-08-09 02:51:03) [email protected]: i bet you cant haha

Yup, definitely a bot.
QUOTE

(2010-08-09 02:51:25) [email protected]: version
(2010-08-09 02:51:28) [email protected]: .version

(2010-08-09 02:51:40) [email protected]: take it now while Im in the shower and tell me ur score later

I then looked up this site he gave me, google turned up NOTHING. This is generally bad.
I loaded the page with some safe software - I didn't -see- any viruses or anything, but I found that it opened officialiqquiz.com in a frame. Officicialquiz.com however -did- have several google results, including this report, which basically shows the whole thing to be a scam.

Now, as you can see from the above chat, the bot was able to do some very basic keyword response, but when faced with a question that it couldn't understand, it wasn't able to cope. The bot even had a bit of "lag" between messages, and the "buddy is now typing" message was shown! - Aside from the responses, it looked like a normal person.
If I hadn't been as suspicious as I am, I could have gotten trapped.

As bots get better and better for this sort of thing, we all need to be more vigilant at keeping our PCs safe, and avoiding getting trapped - what if this bot had been advertising a virus instead? Say under the guise of a new version of MSN?

Here is what you can do:
1. If you are suspicious, ask a question that you know the person you are talking to would be able to know, yet most others couldn't. A good example is asking your X level on RS, when talking with WG or RS friends - Unless the other person was a person, and knew RS, they wouldn't be able to answer it near correctly.
You could also ask their first name, WOW name, WOW level, clan, or something else - just make it something that would be hard for a bot or a scammer to know.

2. Never click on links unless you asked for it first. If you are given a link without explicitly asking for it, google the name of the site. Unless you know its safe, don't click!

3. Use common sense. This will keep you safe 9/10 times - Don't get greedy, or expect to get something for nothing - That is how they trap you.

4. Let others know. If you find one of your friends has been hacked or botted, let them know via cell or any other method you know of.

I hope this helps you guys!

-Rob

Good advice.

Don't think the "third world country" bit is necessary, but that's just because I've lived in third world countries (am currently in one right now) and have a soft spot for them.

But yes, people need to be very careful these days with all sorts of malicious tactics being used by people to get ahold of information that isn't theirs.

I'm not sure what the correct word is, though.

(Especially since some would consider the US to be a third world country)

I don't use MSN but I've seen it on AIM. It follows the saying there's no such thing as a free lunch. If it's "free" there's always a catch whether that varies from getting your e-mail spammed with advertising to stolen identity.

Great advice. I have a tendency to ignore people if they seem a bit flaky--hmm maybe its an automatic response to bots.
