In the event of the DNS going down, the link to this topic is:

CODE
http://92.48.69.8/~wgwilde/forum/index.php?showtopic=18970

Credit to Sean Sabre for showing me this. Guy's a legend.

On the rare occasion, our forums will go down and you'll get an error message when you try to go to wildernessguardians.com/forum. Now, as quite a few of you will -or SHOULD- know, you can still access the website and forums via the following urls respectively:

http://92.48.69.9/~wgwilde/
http://92.48.69.9/~wgwilde/forum/

So, why do these work, yet the standard address doesn't? Because it means the DNS (Domain name) is down. You can still get on via the direct IP address. However, unfortunately most of the links on the forums use forum.wildernessguardians.com/whatever, so while you can see the forum list, you can't log in or view topics or anything.

So... how the f*** am I posting this?

hash.png

What you need to do is modify your hosts file so that www.wildernessguardians.com points to 92.48.69.9 instead. Here's how to do that on Windows.

1. Open up Notepad. If you're on Vista/7, you need to run Notepad as administrator, because they're security whores.
2. Go to this directory: %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\
If the folder appears empty, from the "files of type" dropdown menu, select "all files".
3. Open up the "hosts" file.
4. You should see something like this:
user posted image
(Ignore the fact that I point activate.adobe.com to my localhost, I'm a pirate tongue.gif )
5. After the last entry, add in this line:
CODE
92.48.69.9 www.wildernessguardians.com

The www. is very important, otherwise it will not work.
6. Save it, close it, then try going to www.wildernessguardians.com.
7. ?????
8. PROFIT

What you've done is made it so every link that says "www.wildernessguardians.com" will instead use the server IP rather than the domain name. Holy flying sh** on a stick.

Q and A

Is it safe?
- Yes. Whether via domain or IP, it's still the same server.

Does it work for TS/#WG?
- I haven't tried TS3. However, TS3 and #WG work on par with RobbieBot, so I'm doubtful.

Is there a way to do it on Mac/Linux?
- If you have a Mac/Linux OS, you probably already know how to do it already hash.png (but I don't, sorry)

forum.wildernessguardians.com isn't working?
- Then add in another line to the hosts file with:
CODE
92.48.69.9 forum.wildernessguardians.com

Easy fix smile.gif

I have another problem/it doesn't work/can I send you e-whore pics?
- I'm no expert technician, but I can try my best. My email/msn is [email protected], and I'm usually on IRC as WG_Keanu.

If all else fails - wait it out. The DNS won't be down forever. In the meantime, you can just go to http://92.48.69.9/~wgwilde/ and listen to the entire playlist of background music for the website. It's actually really good.

Thanks. I've always known we had an alternative address but I didn't know you could do that.
No more forum downtime for me happy.gif

Update:

If it still isn't working, I realised the subdomain doesn't work. Add this line into the hosts file as well:

CODE
92.48.69.9 forum.wildernessguardians.com

Robbie, is it something I can do in the future?
If so, what should I do?

Hmm, I only have the tiniest inkling of what you posted but when I get a chance I will give it a shot. What I fear is BOOM a big crash.
