This is a pretty important topic for me.
I need to launch my career as a composer.
I'm making a website with recordings from most of my main compositions.

http://www.wgkeanu.com/marshall/recordings.html

Thanks to Keanu who did most of the building, following my instructions.
What do you guys think of the music?

What I want to know in particular:

1. Your favourites and why
2. Your least favourite (apart from The Night Watchman) and why
3. What might hurt my chances of getting employed (ie what's not professional enough)

Thanks for your time.
This is directly relevant to my career, so it's important.

Free 76k to anyone who gives a thorough response. Clan members only, but anyone else is welcome to comment too.

From a laymans' ear, I quite like 'In a Faraway Land'. Personally, it gives off feelings of nostalgia [having played lots of medieval themed games and music when I was younger] but thats just me ;P
Then again, I've always been a fan of Celtique Medieval ever since you first put it on the website hehe ;].

Cinematic Cues for Orchestra
i. - This is one of the ones I actually don't like. The whole start of it doesn't come across as a cinematic sequence to me. From about 0:40 it picks up, and its enjoyable from there-on in.
ii. - Perfect. I can actually imagine the description below it, exactly as its explained. I can personally picture the two armies, has the whole age of empires feel to it.
iii. - Again, really good. Since these are inspired by film music, I can see this as the intro to a movie, and it has that really WoW kind of feel to it. Would be perfect for a fly-over scenery of the waterfalls before zooming into a specific location. This song actually reminds me of FF7 for the first 1:30. It just has that really good feel and flow to it.
iv. - I can see in this the sadness that would be brought about by not knowing if returning if a definite. That part starts from around 0:34 for me, and the voilin? (or whatever string instrument), that starts at 0:45 really portrays the sadness effect in this.

Piano Preludes
In a Faraway Land. - The opening notes of this do have a good feel to them. Could definitely see this integrated within other work.
The Night Watchmen. - Yeah. Not your best work. Just feels all messy, during the opening, didn't really want to sit through the middle and end of this one. Should be scrapped lol.
Dusk Descending. - I actually can't picture this with the description its given. It seems too intense to be a piece written about sunset. I thought sunset would be a little bit less intense. Without a description though, it is a good piece of music.

The Flower Maiden
The Hymn to the Spirits. - I can feel the "mystical forces" throughout this piece, it does definitely fit the description, and the single instruments adds to the mysteriousness of it. Gives a japanese~ish feel to it.
Thunder and Blizzard.Love how this piece picks up after 0:15 and then drops back down 0:25, before once again picking up slightly later. Fits well in with the excerpts around it.
The Mountain Ascent. - Not too sure about this one. Doesn't really come across as "unique" in its own way. Just feels like something i've heard before remixed with something else I've heard before.
Waltz of the Dragons. Before I read the description, I was picturing similar images in my mind. This is one of my favourites, even though its different from your other music in terms of the simplicity of the main tune throughout it.

The Wayfarer - Think you've posted the full piece of this before on the forums. Don't really see anything wrong with this, nice feel to it. Personally doesn't shout out to me with anything amazingly special, but acts as a good "solid" piece for your resume.

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening - Loving the choir in this. Does wonders showing your diversity, would speak loudly to an employer about what different types of things your music can be integrated into.

Bizet (2007)
Opening Scene. - Again, shows diversity with the digital soundtrack. Still has the same feel as your other work, but I can tell there's another aspect incorporated.

Finale. - Has a slightly creepy feel about it, but in itself is another good piece. Once again, a really good feel coming from your music.

Once Upon a Winter's Wake: A Prelude for Harp. - Again another fine piece, does fit in well with all the others, showing something slightly different, but still has the feel as though you composed it.

Overall, I'm liking the presentation in your site. Thank god you didn't put some stupid picture as the background which repeats the whole way down your page. Your professionalism is evident with the simplicity of your work on your page, the black backdrop enables the reader to focus on the music, without the distraction of some fancy background color scheme. With your banner and links, again the way this is displayed is good; I'm glad anything fancy was put up here and not down below near the music excerpts.

Although I can see "the fantasy composer" throughout your work, I'm not too sure; fantasy doesn't seem a strong enough word to be using in your banner. I think a better line could be placed here, not too sure on any alternatives though.

Man that is such a quality review. I disagree with the point about the Night Watchman (its actually the most intellectual work... there's mathematical processes behind it such as the golden ratio etc... hence why it's up there) and also it's really good for horror movies. Shows off how I can get powerful, disturbing sounds out of the piano. I knew people would hate it. I don't listen to it myself, but I can see it being used in the lead up to an exorcism lol.

The comments are really impressive mate. There's a lot of insight and you must have spent *at least* half an hour doing this for me, so I definitely owe you a drink come Aussie IRL meeting time.

Can't really match Gary's post but Ill try.

I'd just like to point out that throughout this whole site I am disliking the actual descriptions below the pieces, except one, II from Cinematic Cues for Orchestra (2009), I could really imagine the description of that one, but only that one, sorry sad.gif.

Anyway,
I EDIT: Forgot to do this one. This one was great, I liked how the piano notes rolled slightly up each time, I loved the percussion, such perfect timing, and after the loud drums in comes a soft gentle flue, which than becomes sort of an eery sound, perfect transitions between these different tones, completely changing the piece from just a composition to a really well though out, skillfully writting piece of music.

II Amazing, simply amazing, could imagine myself marching towards the battlefield with this piece, although I my doubt in the first five seconds with the different timed drums and bass, I was confused as to what beat the piece would flow at but after the 10 second mark it gathered itself and flowed perfectly, flourishing in the middle.

III This one reminded me of Cinderella for some reason, when she is at the ball, even stronger at the end. I did like the trumpets throughout this one, meshed perfectly with the orchestra

IV This one would go well with a sad scene but there where some parts I thought didn't flow well with it, like 1:17 and 2:17. I got a feeling towards the end that there was something to look forward too, to be joyful about, maybe I'm emo lols.

Each and everyone of these pieces was brilliant but I believe they could be used in a lot more scenes/circumstances than you have glued them too with your description.

In A Faraway Land The start was something just like a Disney story, perfect, something you would imagine to go along with a story. Finished strong, emphasizing a thrilling ending to a riveting tale.

The Nightwatch man Did not like this one, sorry. It was too loud and I didn't feel any sort of connection or anything this could be connect too.

Dusk Descending Again the description just didn't work for me, I could have imagined a million different scenes this could have worked for. This piece was nice, smooth, elegant, I like the rythem, the chord, chord, gap, chord chord was just really well places and it feels like that bit when you hear a song and you forget most of the words then you hear that part and you belt out the 5 words you actually know, the part where you grin. The ending confused me though, it ended with deep, long, strong notes, nothing like the start, but this was without a doubt the best piano piece.

The Flower Maiden (2009)

The Hymn to the Spirits[b] Great soft opening tune to go into whatever lies ahead. For such a simple, basic instrument you have managed to pull off a really good, gentle sound.

[b]Thunder and Blizzard
What I first really liked about this piece was the soft, steady notes from the violin behind the main one, just seemed to work really well. I also enjoyed how It began with just one/two violins and progressed into a few with the same notes but in different octaves (my music terms are a bit rusty, this right? different levels). I began to think the violin screech was going for too long at 0:57 but the cello picks up at the perfect time and sweeps away that sound and smooths it out. All in all, a great piece.

The Mountain Ascent Not one of my favourites, It was a bit too screechy.

Also, I know I might sound rude but you wanted an opinion so here goes
QUOTE
3. What might hurt my chances of getting employed (ie what's not professional enough),

"At the end of his journey, the prince must finally climb a great rocky mountain, upon which rests a castle made of gold, where dragons are keeping his princess as prisoner." It just sounded a bit too immature, I know the style you are composing for is fantasy, but I think you went a bit too much into detail on this one and it ends up looking a bit immature, which doesn't reflect this piece, which was written with discipline and skill.

Waltz of the Dragons Haha, This song was great! As soon as i started I smiled and shook my head from side to side to the beat. I enjoyed this song immensely, I like how it swaps so smoothly into the slowed down tempo so simply, those 3 notes from the recorder right at the end completely made that final 15 seconds, made it perfect. This is my favourite from this section.

The Wayfarer Elegant. Nice piece, I would have liked to have heard more of what was going on @ 2:05, sounded like something good smile.gif, shame you had to shorten it.

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening I can see by the dates this is on of your first pieces, its bloody great. This would be a great piece to put on your tape, because you have incorporated a choir into it, which just completes the piece. I especially like when they don't actually sing, just go "Haaaaa" and the piano goes with it and flows so well. Really good piece.

Bizet (2007)

Opening Scene 1:35 - 1:50 is the best part, the lead up to this part prepares you for something, you don't know what, and that section that you get hits you perfectly, nothing too strong like loud banging drums but still a strong bass. Another good piece.

Finale[i] It was good, enjoyed how you built up to the middle and had a strong middle section of the music. This strong middle allowed for the softer, more melllow part after it which just continued on brilliantly. Enjoyed the church bell sound btw. No problems with this, completely professional.

[i]Once Upon A Winter's Wake: A Prelude for Harp
I've always liked the harp so this is auto great. This section of music could be used in so many different ways, it would be great to include this in your CD.

And thats that, I really liked the way you composed with the multi layers of the same instruments, something a real professional does. The way you bounce notes from one instrument into a corresponding note on another instrument with precision is great, really helps the loud, quick, darker parts of your compositions.

I think the way you have set up the website is completely of standard for even the best composers. Was so impressed when I saw no stupid adds on the side of the pages haha. Ofc you will need to change the website name but I understand this is the beginning.

Finally, I think you should unclassify yourself as just a Fantasy composer because you are limiting you capabilities. What you have here is amazing and I believe you could branch out of just Fantasy, I don't mean to belittle fantasy, but as a profession you want maximum exposure in all genres. Keep up the fantasy work but maybe try some other stuff in the background, and if you already have, I would love to hear it. I would also like to note, I could imagine some of that music in LoTR, some woul go perfectly with some specific scenes.

My favourite out of them all is a tie between II and Waltz of the Dragons, my reasons already stated.

My least favourite would have to be (excluding the night watchman) is The Mountain Ascent, the screech of the violin just didn't work for me, but that me, I prefer a much softer violin and a louder cello/percussion.

You've already made it Eugene, you just need the people with the scripts, cast, and cash to realise this. Great job mate.

I believe what you're saying. I do restrict myself. I want to keep the descriptions because they were what I saw, but I need to let the reader know that they are open to interpretation.

Being a fantasy composer is my dream, and I would fucking hate having to write music for some shit like The Devil Wears Prada. But I guess a gig is a gig.

Dusk Descending is a particularly versatile one and like Gary said, I locked myself in a little. When I hear it, I can see a long drive along the coast, or a parent looking for a lost child... but it was composed for a sunset, so what do I say? I think in addition to what I've written, I'll open it up and say that while it was composed with one image in mind, many others are equally fitting.

And the Mountain Ascent description *is* tacky. I'll figure out something else, or take it off.

Thanks Josh, I owe you one.

Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening is my favorite of all time, to me the tiptoes of music that start the piece make me feel like snowflakes falling and swirling.
I feel it is a time of day when stolen moments of time are mine to spend in reflection before turning for home.

The biography picture makes your nose look huge and your smirk makes you look like a smart ass. It is just a bad angle on you.

The Night Watchmen isn't bad. It sounds unfinished though. I can see how people do not like it, but it is nothing compared to some avant garde music.

1. Your favourites and why
As you know, Once Upon a Winter's Wake is my new #1, and Dusk Descending is #2. The ones I like are the ones I can really visualise the best compared to what they're composed for. That, and my taste is aligned to the softer and melodic. But what I really like is the imagery. I'd go for Cinematic Cue II as #3. And I do like the Finale to Bizet, as that's one of the newer ones for me. That's #4.

2. Your least favourite (apart from The Night Watchman) and why
I've listened to them all several times. I can't really think of one I don't like. Infact, of all we've heard I can only say The Closure of the Cosmic Rift is the only one that doesn't appeal to me as much as the others, and it's not on there. If I -had- to choose my least favourite, I'd say Hymn to the Spirits - but that's because of quality. It might just be because it's live, I don't know. The recorder is great, but without anything else it just came across as a bit bland. Although in studio quality I'm sure it would be great, it might just be background noise that does it. I'm too picky >.<

3. What might hurt my chances of getting employed (ie what's not professional enough)
The buttons suck, they need re-doing tongue.gif

Gene, all these pieces are absolutely fantastic.
I've listened to all of them at least twice and I honestly can not get enough of them, especially "The nightwatchman" then again I'm into that kind of creepy sounding stuff.
Great job my friend and I'm sure with those pieces you'd get hired fairly quickly. biggrin.gif
