For a long time, the IRC has been a source of tension. We claim we need rules and guidelines in order to keep the peace and deal with people with some form of protocol (needed when circumstances are in the grey area).

I can't find rules to the IRC anywhere. I know I made a topic ages ago, but its been left with the old forums. The IRC appears to be covered in the general clan rules which, when its a point of high tension, may not be the best idea. These are the only rules I can find which applies to the private IRC:

-Show Courtesy At All Times
-This means no flaming, spamming or begging
-Deliberately ignoring or excluding other members is considered to be in breach of this rule

To say we're coming down strict on topics of conversation in the IRC, we really need clarity. If someone new to the clan comes in and talks about drugs, he doesn't know he's doing anything wrong, because there isn't a rule topic. Same goes with sex talk, racism, sexism and anything else inappropriate in large amounts.

Sure, some people can use discression to expand 'courtesy' but some can't. Strangers to the clan have no idea what rules cover the IRC, and when challenged can get confused as to why its not clarified.

If there is a topic and I missed it, please show me. It must be in an obscure place though.

Thanks.

I totally agree with you, and I'm sorry for not seeing this topic earlier. Not sure how I slipped passed it.

The IRC needs rules and guidelines, and people need to be kicked when they disobey. No more of this "keep going and you're kicked" bullshit because it never happens. People say "Keep going and you're kicked" but things continue and nothing happens.

~My 2 cents.

http://swiftirc.net/index.php?page=rules

this is where this rules were copied from:

Network rules
To be permitted access to the SwiftIRC network, you must agree to follow the network rules. Repeated failure to follow these rules will result in your access to the network being revoked.

You should also read the SwiftIRC disclaimer

Rules summary
This is a short list of the primary network rules. If you are unclear about the meaning of a certain rule, you should be able to find more detailed information from the links provided in some rules or from the rules index located on the left of this page. Please note that the number next to an item in the rules index will not necessarily "correspond" to the number of a rule in the summary.

If a rule is ambiguous concerning a certain situation, the network staff will use their best judgement to resolve the issue. Please do not be led to believe that you can get away with inappropriate actions by manipulating your intepretations of the rules.

1. No spamming
Spamming is defined as sending irrelevant messages, usually in an attempt to promote something (a channel or web site etc).

[Read more about spam and advertising]

2. No flooding
Flooding is defined as sending large quantities of (usually repeated) messages or commands for no legitimate reason.

[Read more about flooding]

3. Do not attempt to steal registered nicknames or channels
You must not attempt to obtain unauthorized access to another users registered nicknames or channels.

[Read about nickname ownership]
[Read about channel ownership]

4. Do not attempt to get past network or channel bans
You must not intentionally get around a ban. You must wait until your ban expires/is removed, without exception.

[Read about channel bans]

5. Connecting through insecure proxies is not permitted
Insecure proxies allow users to evade bans and otherwise break the rules without being accountable for their actions. Therefore, the network automatically scans all clients for open proxies.

[Read more about proxies]

6. No file sharing, botnets, spam, or otherwise harmful bots are allowed on the network
Bots intended to serve copyrighted materials ("XDCC" bots) are not allowed on the network, as per our intellectual property rule.

[Read about file sharing bots]

A botnet is defined as a computer infected with a trojan or otherwise under the control of an unauthorized party.

[Read about botnets]

A spam bot is an automated client that messages random users and channels with messages intended to spread malware or advertise web sites.

7. You should respect intellectual property and copyright law
You must not use SwiftIRC resources to infringe or assist in infringing upon the copyrights of any individual or organization. This rule prohibits any illegal file sharing ("warez") channels as well as channels concerning cheating in multiplayer computer games. Channels based on unauthorized derivative works are also disallowed. Profiting by selling intellectual property when you have no permission to do so is also disallowed.

This rule explicitly disallows any user to engage in the selling, buying, or trading of RuneScape accounts, items, membership, for out of game money or anything else. The account and membership parts of this clause also extend to ingame items/currency. Users are encouraged to bring any such activity to the attention of the network staff.

[Read more about copyright]

8. You may not scam, harm, or otherwise attempt to deceive another user with malicious intent
It is forbidden to attempt to deceive a user into revealing confidential information, installing malware, or anything otherwise harmful to them. It is also not allowed to attempt to disrupt a user's IRC session, using methods such as flooding and exploiting vulnerabilities in the user's IRC client.

9. Don't try to be a vigilante
The network has rules for a reason. If you feel that another user has broken the rules, or is otherwise acting in a manner unacceptable to you, you should contact the network staff or either ignore or ban the user as appropriate. Never "retaliate" against a rule breaker or otherwise take matters into your own hands.

I've gone mad over this several times, where I close down IRC all together. I can take a joke, I can talk about sex, but to a certain point. Yeh we should have some guidelines about this.
(we do, but do not force them upon users enough Imo)

Rachel, I think Mike ment WG's channel rules, not the network rules.

I do, however agree with you on this :/

I was only suggesting using them as a guide to set our own rules because if we don't follow them we could have a irc moderator sitting in our channel checking on us.

I would suggest a quick pm to your friends if you see it is going in a direction that it should not be going. It is better to be helping them back off a flame issue or some kind of talk that should not be in public.

“Rules are not necessarily sacred, principles are.”

I think the idea is that maybe general rules are better then trying to make like a huge list that no one will follow any way. Does council really want to be the watchdog of every line that is typed.

I have seen a lot of abuse lately with staff kb ing people on a whim. It creates a bad impression in the lobby. It is uncalled for totally and should be stopped.

The network rules are a good base to start from.

However, a lot of them need to specificised to WG. They are very technical, which is useful, but probably needs the more verbal ones as well.
