I'm looking for a cheap laptop that can at least support RS in high detail without ANY lag. If I can get a slightly more expensive one that can do the same for F.E.A.R, that'd be great too. Looking for something under 500 USD. Cheaper the better. And nothing that only has like windows 98, that's too cheap.

Oh, and I need one that will last through college, I'll need it for that too.. I need like 8 years out of that bitch

HP Pavilion Laptops are great, try to find an old one though, newer ones are like $800? I dunno.

Well, it doesn't NEED to run fear

My desktop from 2002 still works, just a little laggy on RS. Best it can support is Halo 1 on safe mode.

True story.

Look towards Dell. They've got some pretty cheap notebooks.

Also, do some internet searching on things called netbooks. They're like notebooks, but really small. Basically for work only. Some don't even have a CD Drive. The CPU isn't powerful, and runs only WinXP because Vista sucks up to much power.

The plus is that you'll literally be able to take it anywhere. You also won't have to worry about gaming distractions while you should be working.

You won't need gaming specs at college. You'll get no time to play it. I'm speaking from experience

Im also looking at buying a laptop, but finally settled on one today (acer aspire 5735) only to find every store was out of stock. I took my old laptop up to uni but it was slow as hell. Like 15 mins to turn on and 10 mins to actually load anything, 7 years old.

I'd go with 2gb R.A.M, maybe near 2ghz. If you're looking for 8 years lasting, you might need 3 or 4gb ram

OR you could splurge and get a new MacBook.

2.0 Ghz C2D
Starts w/ 2GB and can be upgraded to 4GB RAM
Decent HDD

Would last a while I'm sure. People have REALLY old Macs that are still kicking.

Go with Apple if you can spare the extra $700-900. I know you said $500, but the more you spend the better the result.
