I'm the idiot, guide me. laugh.gif
Getting a new laptop at the end of the school year and since they all come with Vista loaded on them, I wanted to know if anyone could describe the different Vista versions to me, and what's up with the 64bit and 32bit.

Oh and I hear microsoft is working on a Windows 7 already? so did Vista like suck at life?

Please and thank you,
Christian

You don't need a 64 bit Operating System. There is a select few programs that require 64 bit OS's to run, but a majority don't. Also, I don't know if you will, but a 64 bit OS cannot run most games. Stick with 32.

I'm not quite sure about for labtops, but if you had a Desktop PC, you'd need at least 4 GB of RAM to run Vista smoothly. Vista itself takes up about 1 GB. I currently have 4 GB on my PC (which I play Crysis, CoD4, Assassin's Creed, etc. on max settings with) and it runs amazingly well.

All the bullshit you hear about Vista sucking isn't true. This usually comes from morons who have 512 GB of RAM and decide to blow 100 dollars and upgrade to Vista, only to have it run slow as hell. Vista isn't perfect, but it isn't bad either. If you have a good computer it is definitely better than XP. It has many features that are simply comfortable and easy to use.

I don't know much about Server 7 but it will just make businesses and large companies want to upgrade to it. The reason everyone says Vista fails is because it doesn't add much to XP. It is definitely not WORSE THAN XP IF YOUR COMPUTER CAN HANDLE IT, but not THAT much better either.

Hope I helped a bit,
-Useph1

Basic has a few features, but you really want Home Premium.

Ultimate has ALOT of problems, premium doesn't have as many.

Format PC.
Install XP or Linux/Ubuntu.

Profit.

Seriously, I'm on a vista PC at school right now, I just tried making a shortcut to firefox on my desktop, and it asked me THREE TIMES if I was sure I wanted to do it. WTF?!

Stick with 32-bit. Most applications work just as well with 32-bit as they do with 64-bit, and there's a very good chance you're not going to be doing some intense powerhungry server stuff with your laptop, which is the main reason behind the 64-bit.

64-bit is kind of like an expanded version, not necessarily in terms of features, but in terms of capacity and usability. Like your maximum amount of RAM with 32-bit might be 4GB, but with 64-bit it could be 8GB+, that's just an example.

I can't advise you on what version of Vista to get (there are like 6+?) so I'm at a loss there.

Yes Microsoft is working on Windows 7. It's supposed to be Vista-esque but better in that it's more user friendly. Some features are interesting, but I won't go into details. I personally believe that Vista sucked at life. I've used it on other computers, and it's so foreign to me. I'm now a Mac user, but prior to that I was a PC guy. I was still a PC guy when the switch to Vista was made, and initially it LOOKED nice, but then I saw how slow it ran, but again that was in the initial launch stage when there were major problems. Now though, I can barely navigate my way through things.

I assume you're just going to stick with a PC, so me advising you to get a Mac is out of the question (even though you can run XP/Vista via parallels or VMWare or even Bootcamp).

The best way to learn about Vista in my opinion is to watch some podcasts that are MS based. Look for some that give little tips and tricks when using Vista. I do that with my Mac and I've learned about so many hotkeys and shortcuts it makes getting around the computer and to files so much easier than I ever imagined.

Just so you know, Vista is VERY different from XP. My guess is it'd take some getting used to, because it's like (again this is coming not from a veteran Vista user) names were changed (i.e Control Panel might not be Control Panel anymore - unsure about this). I find the Start Menu crazy hard to get around. It just plain confuses me. I'm sure though if you spent a good day with it you'd know where the essential things were.

Good luck with your buying.

Do you already know what brand?

If not, I'd highly recommend Dell. I personally wouldn't recommend HP because my family has had horrible luck with them - bought two HP laptops, the screen on one of them doesn't turn on all the time (it's hit or miss so it's in my brother's room and is on all the time) and the same problem arose a few months later with my dad's).

If you wanted you could go for a Netbook, which is basically a really compact notebook with literally the bare essentials - most don't even have a CD-Drive which is an instant no-buy for me. They tend to only run XP because Vista takes up a lot of power and RAM and like I said, they have the bare essentials.

Again, good luck.

You can disable that feature if you aren't 100% retarded.

Most of the people that complain about the slowness of vista have 512/1024MB RAM, Pentium 3 processor. You're fault that your computer blows. I have a Dual Core clocked at only 2.33 GHz, and only 2 GB of RAM and I run Vista Ultimate semi-flawlessly.

Vista Business 32-bit, 3 GB of ram and a decent DEDICATED video card. If you find a laptop without a 256mb dedicated video card, stay the hell away from it.

Just having a dedicated GPU greatly increases your speed because it takes so much of the burden off your CPU.

Vista Business is what I have, it's void of crap-ware when you get it, it's got more security features, hard drive backup features and better networking options essentially. That's the leg up it has on Vista Premium.

Windows 7, is going to essentially be Windows Vista 2.0. It's essentially a version of Vista that runs faster, uses less memory, takes less disk space, more secure, more stable, and a slightly changed GUI. The GUI from what my buddy showed me on his laptop actually resembles a Mac OSX style of start menu. You click the windows button and up pops a start menu that strongly resembles the Mac Toolbar thing. The hope is that all of these little tiny netbook things that have next to no guts in them, may one day be able to run Windows 7 instead of windows XP or Ubuntu. Another good thing, since Windows 7 is built from Vista, any Vista application will be completely compatible with Windows 7. The bad news/good news, depending on how you look at it, is Microsoft is in absolutely no rush to release this OS. It's a "release it when everything works" project which is a change from what we've seen from xBox 360 and Windows Vista where both were released with HUGE problems. The bad news is if you haven't figured it out, is the lack of a time line.

meh.

And this is the major difference between XP and Vista: System requirements.

While you need 3GB of ram minimum, a dual-core CPU, and 256 meg dedicated card so you can run Vista decently, for XP you can get away with a lot less - A single-core, 1.8ghz cpu with 1GB of ram and 32 megs of video ram runs pretty nicely, and if you went with the above vista specs... XP would run extremely well!

I don't see any reason to use Vista - It takes far more power, for the same basic functionality, and costs more also!

I suggest finding a decent Vista-compatable laptop, get an XP license, and format the sucker. You will end up with a very nicely running computer, and be able to play games better than on Vista.
Of course, if you are on a budget, you can find a decent laptop for school & gaming for about $300... But you have to look at used or new-old-stock - And, such laptops come with XP also!

Of course, if you are willing to do it, Ubuntu is going to be an even better option.

Also, nowdays, an intel-based mac is a good way to go - Nice, high-quality machines, and as previously mentioned, they can run Windows also(both in a window(parallels; vmware), and actually running it(boot camp)
