[Over]Day Two

By His Lordship on 22/11/2008
This is a reminder, advising members that ALL anniversary events are worth double attendance points, except the major anniversary events, which are worth triple attendance points. Sign ups are for each event, not for each day, and are only applicable to those who are confident that they can attend.

Day Two

Number of Regular Events: Three
Number of Major Events: Zero
Suitable Time Zones: Australians, Asians and Europeans
Date: December 7th, 2008 (Sunday)

_______________________________

1. Race Through The Members Dungeon
user posted image

The entire clan switches to a PvP world, and on the word GO!, they hurry through the members dungeon to the water obelisk, where I am waiting. No agility shortcuts allowed. I will be skulled, and wearing semi-valuable armour, and I will have a partner who will be unskulled and wearing semi-valuable armour. First person to come up and kill me gets to keep the loot. Second person gets the loot of the unskulled person. During the race, you are allowed to attack each other, but attacking will slow you down. It is up to you to choose whether you want to freeze/kill people or make a dash for it.

This is one of only a few JaGeX minigames we've let into the anniversary line-up. We will not be doing too many JaGeX games since the WG-created minigames are more uncommon and novel... but the Stealing Creation minigame is really quite a fun game, so we've decided to put it on the anniversary shortlist.

The only thing that spoiled the event for me was making swastikas.

Yeah, what was up with that Lordy? To me it just seemed like an all around bad idea. First of all, I was worried that some members might get in trouble with RS rules. I think it might fall under the category of offensive language, even though it is a symbol. It is even riskier when you stand in the middle and say something like "join the runescape german club" near the most crowded place in world 2. You have been banned before in RS quite times Lordy, I do not understand why you of all would take this risk of getting banned in the middle of our anniversary.

Nor is it really good for publicity, I mean all SE has to do is find a pic of us standing the middle of a swastika, and as far as RSC is concerned it would be a blank check to crash our events.

Posting this in our picture archives would also be a horrible idea. If I was a potential recruit and stumbled upon a picture of WG making a swastika I would think either:

A) They are racists.
B) They are insensitive pricks.
C) They are willing to do just about anything to get attention.
D) All of the above.

Obviously I know none of these are true, and if anything we were making fun of racists, but to a new recruit it looks quite bad.

By Valdremia on 08/12/2008
Retired from game right after a few of last event, it was a concern and had found it offensively a bad idea.

A sore reminder.

The swastika symbol dates back to ancient history and is used in several cultures as the symbol of peace, liberation and luck, a few of the representations. It can be found in historic places such as ruins of Troy, or an emblem in the Finnish Air force, and even once an emblem in the US Air Force until replaced with an eagle in WWII.

We could argue that its not the symbol at fault but perceptions, there are cultures/groups still uses it within the premise of its original representation, but that's religious tradition.

Put that aside and it represents a memory, twisted by a very dark deep rooted history in modern civilisation, WWII. The theory of Aryan supremacy is also a fallacy - no such history professed exists. It's all based on and used from another source theory, turned into a self-prophetic idealism by an intelligent & twisted mind of a man, who redefined the meaning of evil and caused a meaningless massacre in the name of "race supremacy". Used this symbol very symbolically.

When for it being embraced by some, it is abhorred & banned in several countries/cultures. You could simply land up in jail for some. It's that sensitive.

Making the symbol delivers controversy. Saying "join the runescape german club" in the middle of the symbol is hardly liberating. It's not a doubtless peace symbol e.g. white doves. To use it stirs questions. It could easily represent as the inability to empathise with history of our knowledge of the dark & sensitive memories it brings to related groups/countries.

If we weigh the pros and cons, its a very unnecessary risk to make. Doing it or encouraging it as a group is worse. Consequential banning.

I know this had been done before, thought it had been abandoned, now its back.

Even if it have been overlooked, when it puts others at risks and sends a racist message more likely than anything, you'll need to think about is it worth it for whatever it is you're trying to say or do. I have no idea why in the world it was used.

Unless there's a particular kind of crowd to attract joining, which I doubt, its not healthy for recruitment even when its not a recruitment scheme, we are in a public arena (a very crowded one too), its a public display and that's public relations.

Not impressed, either.

By George on 08/12/2008
I agree.
I would most strongly discourage you from posting any pictures of the making of those swastikas on any clan forums and indeed definitely not on our website photo albums.
That could potentially deal WG a great deal of harm.

Now post the recaps + attendances pl0x!

By Pminogue on 12/12/2008
I shall be there!!!!!!!!!1
