UCAS applications
By Groedius on 26/02/2009
So who sent off there University applications for this year in England. Am i the only 1 trying to get into University this September ?
For me I have this
City University - Computer science with games technology - Firm - DMM
Westminster University - Computer Games - Insurance - MMM
Thats the Uni that I have accepted it is advised to have an insurance with Lower grades just incase i do not get the DMM that i am currently working my ass off for so Fingers crossed this September ill be at City University london

Btw for all those in UK and are unsure of the grade DMM and MMM i put up there its because im doing BTEC National Diploma in ICT.
D = Distinction
M = Merit
P = Pass
Its the equivalent of A levels
For example a Distinction would be the same as an A.
An Merit is the same as a C.
An Pass is the same as an E, I think
For Ucas points its 100 points Distinction, 80 points Merit, 60 Points Pass.
So for City ill need 240 points and for Westminster ill need 220 points.
I also got my key skills level 2 examinations this counts as 30 extra bonus UCAS points.

I'm allready at uni for the first trimester
By Cameronm123 on 26/02/2009
I send mine off next year, but my teachers are already getting us to look at Universitys we're interested in.
So far a few that took my interest are:
- University of Durham
- University of Bedfordshire
and Yeah still looking.
Also, just interested what are your plans in terms of housing? You gonna get a room on campus or you gonna travel there everyday and stay at home?
By Pyro Blade26 on 26/02/2009
england seems so small compared to the US theres probably more universities in my state (massachusetts) than all of england =X and i dont understand your system for the most part
Good luck getting into your top choice school!

Westminster is about 20 mins by bus and City is about 40 mins by Train or maybe lil more due to rush hour so i will probably live at home as it would cost over 100 quid a week to stay away from home. Im going to apply for the full whack 3.5k Loan for maintenance whilst living at home in london would be 6.5k if living away from home. So over each year im going to have the full 3.5k to PARTAY, get there, food, etc. I am doing this because the loan is ridiculous its like a 1 % Interest loan and after 4 years i pay back 50 quid a month it is tested against what i earn and after 20 years anything outstanding from the 7k a year i borrow for maintenance and tuition fees is WHIPED CLEAN

#. So thats all well good and Epic. So ill have enough money to buy a car etc and have EPIC fun. Probably even a Holiday off my student loan which is FUCKING EPIC.

I've been looking around a lot, visiting various places... and I think I am going to apply to...
The University of Cambridge
The University of Exeter
The University of Warwick
I'm gonna look at Nottingham, Durham + Southampton as well....
Not sure about Cambridge.... the English Lit course looks... well I don't like the look of it really

Durham's a lovely place and a smexy uni!
By Narita on 26/02/2009
make sure the unis you apply for accept key skills for ucas points, UWE for example doesnt.
i hoping to do civil engineering at UWE but as a year 14 (redoing A2) practise practise practise papers again and again, if youve done every paper once do them again. thats how i went from 25% (e) at AS maths to a 61% © at A2.

Screw uni, get an apprenticeship. Earn why you learn. And chances are i'll be on just as good if not better than most people who end up at uni.

True, but the fact is that a university degree can go much further. For instance, a degree in Commerce with a Master in Accounting can land you a job with $50,000 starting and all the way up to 150,000 if your good at it, and that's in Canada where you don't get paid as much in the states. If I were to convert it its prolly about 80,000 starting US and all the way up to 500,000 per year. Even in more in some cases. You cant make that with an apprenticeship. Not to bring what your doing down, because apprenticeship are awesome ways of making a career and making good cash. I'm just saying the University is able to take you further when it comes to salary, perhaps not experience, which is something that needs to be dealt with in my opinion.

You dont just end at an apprenticeship. What im doing is a 3 year NVQ lvl 2 course in plumbing. Once that finishes i do another year in gas engineering and become corgi registered. After that i i get paid full wage. Do night courses in electrical, engineering, anything to do with the mechanical side of being of site. Then you have all the qualifications to be able to become a site engineer. Do that for a little while, learn the ropes of that job. Then your really in the know. This gives you the ability to start your own company, providing you have the contacts its not too much of a difficult job. If you achieve that, your laughing.
Thats my plan anyways.

Start your own company? But you'll need some1 to help you out because all this time you've been trained in engineering and plumbing etc. Perhaps some1 with a degree in commerce would be needed

And thats something that just can't be apprenticed, not today at least.
By Bambaleo on 27/02/2009
why would you ever want to spend your whole life playing/making computer games?....like, if you now tell some1 you're addicted to a computer game (RS obvious) ppl just laugh you out and call you a geek BUT one day you realize that there's something more out there than your computer, something that is called real life.
there are more serious things in the world than computer games. But that's not really my business, gl.

You pay people to do that, you use your contacts to get you contracts, and once your off you take on more ppl etc etc. I would just be a normal site engineer, however i would be taking home the wage that a normal business owner would. Being the head of a company to do with engineering is nothing like what it would be for an IT or banking company.
An apprentice that went my college was a millionair in under 5 years after completing his apprenticeship, he did exactly what i have in mind.

Actually Gilli The city of London university the top 1 im applying for a currently doing a new scheme. I do my first year of University as normal and then for 3 years after this i do 1 day a week at University and 4 days a week at a job. This means i get pay whilst i study. So i get an education plus the advantages of your apprenticeship SO SCREW APPRENTICESHIP

Also there is like no openings for apprenticeships in the computing industry with me looking to go into Computer games.
STOP STEALING MY THREAD with your arguments too

Also at Mojo who said about the 21k he was left my his uncle dieing i WOULD NEVER waste that money. Ill have around 40k from the house my Nan sold in USA plus the 6k i have giving me around 50k GBP HOWEVER i do not wish to blow my cash on getting an education.
Why ?
This is why its the cheapest loan I WILL EVER get. It is brilliant with basically no interest and then after 15 years they write it off. So for 15 years ill have to pay around 50 - 150 pounds a month to the Loan company. in order to pay off my 20k Debt. That would only work out to me paying around maybe 12k back to them. Giving me a free 8k

So thats basically my maintenace loan i am taking out i get to SPEND it on WHATEVER i choose and i will NEVER end up paying the cash back. Which is FUCKING awesome

I got it all planned out
By Samurai-JM on 27/02/2009
In USA you get $4000 free just for showing up.

Gotta do some community service of course, but dang.

Good Luck Andrew. Sounds like your working your plan out well. I'm sure your father is happy about this.

When you see Penn State on applications here, I know most of the time they get a call in to interview. Where you go does have an effect on your future.

Well lets see why i would want to work on Computer games. Firstly it is the biggest industry in England at the moment it is booming it is making EVEN more then the Film Industry. They are crying out for graduate programmers to programme computer games and i am good at this and enjoy doing it. So i get paid alot of money to do something which i enjoy doing and i am good at doing it. So why not ?
The only people who get paid for playing games = Games testers which really you dont need any qualification to do. Right now at the moment i could be a games tester part time or w.e If i so choose to do so because you dont need to know alot to test games.
Also the programming skills learned and the languages used do not just apply to computer games they apply for all sorts of things within computers like the operating system and drivers to make the hard ware work etc. So i would not be limited to just computer games. Mainly im looking into being a programmer id just like to do it within computer games because it would be something i would find i can enjoy.
