My event idea

By David on 16/04/2009
Ok, so this is something I've been thinking about a lot, and I kind of have all the basics worked out, I just need some feedback.

The idea comes from the game "King of the Hill" with a "sort of" RTS feel, or at least I feel that way about it.

Basically we'd take all the people there to a location. I wanted a hotspot, but there isn't a suitable location without risks (Ardy is a possibility on a unpopulated world).

When we get there we'd divide everyone into two teams (or more depending on attendance).

How it'd work is each team would try to take control of houses/buildings in the area (other places could be Port Sarim - the shops, Draynor - the houses north of the bank). So the battle would last for ~20 minutes and at the end of it all the referees (I'd be one) would go to each building and count up how many people from each team are in each building - the team with more in that building claims it. The team with the most buildings wins.

It would be an all styles fight:

Melee: Steel/Mith armor and weapons
Range: Leather (studded is fine) armor with maple bow iron arrows
Mage: Reg robes with fire strike spells (bolt if you think strike is to weak)
- Any ammy
- Leather boots
- Leather gloves (except rangers)
- Any food

The idea is people keep returning (since it's little to no loss).

We might need a few more referees and I was thinking having tertiary+ be referees, but it really depends on the turnout.

I think this even has the potential to be incredibly fun if we get enough people. People could be really imaginative. Like coordinate on TS breaking the team into two or three groups assigned to take specific houses and move from house to house clearing it up until the point of actual tallying of members.

That aspect came from when I play C&C or AoE when you start to expand your base. Send the unit to build another TC or Command Center and have units come in from the initial starting position and halfway through the map.

I'd really love for this to be an allied event because that would make it even more fun. We could have two rounds:
- WG vs allies (two way, or three way depending on which allies turn up and how many from each clan)
- Total mixing of all clans

So, give me your feedback. All suggestions are welcome. I *think* everything is pretty solid with exception of location. I would like for this to be an F2P event (hence suggesting Port Sarim) because it would open it up to more people.

So yeah, comments?

TBH I dont know if we would be able to pull enough hashdown.gif.png

That would be the main and biggest problem.

By Groedius on 16/04/2009
IF we could pull the people it would be good fun other then that it sounds pretty good to me and could be fun to play against our allies.

By David on 16/04/2009
That's the thing, we'd need the pull.

That's why I was asking people what kinds of events they liked. If they like it, they're more likely to come.

Hopefully people like this idea. There is a group that would come no matter what, but still that's really just a minority.

From my experiences of holding events, telling people to get items in advance never works (such as steel/mith). Unless you plan on handing out 30 or so sets of steel, it's a problem.

Also, PvP is not a very welcoming place. If a pker/1-itemer spots us, the event is ruined. If we did do your event, it would have to be with allies, our pulls to non-pvp events right now is about 10. Awful.

I'm pretty good at thinking up new thins to do in scape, so if you need any more help let me know. Like the zombie survival game, it takes a lot of setting up and work and the results aren't always worth it. People tend to misbehave during these kinds of things.

I think it could work but you really need to a gameplan set in stone... when I made my event people hid in runecraft altars...

I believe this is the idea that WE decided on and brainstormed a while ago?
...
We also decided on a place.... the houses around the fight arena.

I don't think this is the time to be doing this... we can't even pull 15 people to a 3 day prep war at prime time.

Oh yeah lul, forgot that. I'd prefer it be accessible to F2P though for a broader audience.

I feel that this may actually be the perfect time for an event like this. It's different from anything we're doing now so people may be intrigued.

We could use the Event of the Month system and make the event have a war like status (ie: if you sign up 'Yes'd and don't show it's looked at, and if you're online you must be there) to hopefully ensure decent attendance AND show we're not putting to much weight on warring or leaving skilling (or non-combat) in the dust.

I think the reason we get such shitty pulls is because things are so repetitive. A SC game here, some D&D there, some Fight Pits here, some Castle Wars there. It's ALL been done before. Many people have the same complaints of wars. It's all running around the walls (CWA) attacking someone and then attacking someone else. The only change comes in the form of being piled, or binding. In PKRIs, it's run left, run right, hug rocks, gain energy, run left, run right, hug rocks...die...return...run left, run right, hug rocks, gain energy, run left, run right...you get the point. It's the same thing over and over again.

Not to say that that isn't enjoyable to some, but I've read from previous posts that repetitiveness is a main reason as to why people don't go to events - they're always the same ones.

This one isn't. It's new, it's different. It incorporates aspects from games outside of RS.

@Randy

I totally get what you mean. That's why I posted it here first, for feedback. The *basic* foundation of the event is there. I just need to work out the kinks.

I think it would HAVE to be PvP. I mean, Port Sarim isn't exactly a major PKing spot in F2P. But I get what you mean, but then again it'd be what? A set of steel or mith, some green hides and some mind or chaos runes?

About the items thing, that's why I think we should put a lot more importance on the Event of the Month. Make one event each month have war status (ie: hella important). If people know the event matters, they'll make an effort. That's the main problem we're facing. Skipping a weekly non-combat event doesn't affect anything, not preparing for an event doesn't affect anything. Skipping a war does, so people generally don't do it.

Thanks for the feedback though, and I know you've got a great imagination, so I'll be bouncing ideas off you when they pop up.
