Internet Priveledges
By WG_Aaron on 17/04/2009
Ok so I was browsing YouTube today and came across this video. Please disregard the title as it is misleading.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zBEWhDDjSAThis is the only video that actually talked about it. disregard whatever he says but the point is Congress is voting on whether or not they should have the power to have the power to completely shut down the internet in the United States. Now I don't think that this safe, they can't get ANYTHING right. Who is going to decide what is and what isn't an internet crisis? What exactly gives them this authority?
Discuss please.
Once again disregard the title. Its the point of the bill that I want discussed.

They can't for one big reason... None of the online video game companies will let them. They get too much money, and will bribe/cheat/steal their way to keeping their rights clear. Americans play too many games!

The government is getting way too socialist for me. We have no freedoms nowadays.

I love Defranco. I need to listen to this stuf more. And yeah its never going to pass, just like all those legalization of marijuanazation laws. Never pass. Ever. If it does, I leave this country, seriously. Can't live without mah interwebs.

Way to dismissive. The fact that is on the floor of the congress and/or senate make it possible.

I am completely opposed to this. I can possibly understand why they'd think this up, and how it could be useful (preventing swift contact between terrorist cells in and out of the USA etc.). However, that is FAR to much authority for the President to have.
I personally believe they wouldn't abuse it, but still...they shouldn't even have the ability to do it.
I read about another bill/law/whatever it's called that was being discussed which concerned any portable electronic device (I think that was it), and how the President (or someone) would have the authority to just search it. I don't recall it perfectly (obviously...) but that is what I remember. I'd trust Obama (or whoever the authority was given to) to do the right thing, but again...they shouldn't have that power.

Not going to happen, civil rights groups will have a field day, if Congressmen want to keep their seats they'll vote and say it loud and in front of the constituents.

regardless of if it passes or not, we will know who voted for it, They dont have secret ballot in Senate or Congress. All we have to do is check the website and see who voted which way

Don't forget who won out when the secret service tried to
take Obama's blackberry away from him for security
reasons!! It'll never ever ever happen.
By Planolocal on 17/04/2009
that dude tells it like it is.
and the internet isnt going to get shut down, but the fact that someone is trying to pass the bill... it kinda makes me wanna piss on the senate.

They're politicians they'll want their constituents to know that they were against such a blatant violation of their rights so they get reelected. Besides people will check the website anyway to see which way they voted if they pay attention and so lobbyist groups know who to support.

My thoughts exactly. But I still think we shouldn't just dismiss it.
