£20 fine

By bobler2 on 23/03/2008
Ye trivial i know it just got me curious.

I was on a train back to home with a friend. We got to our final station before being picked up by his parents because we made a royal **** up of train times. We got our tickets inspected and he asked our ages...My friends being 15, mine 16. I ask why and he showed me that i had a got a childs ticket when i should have had an adults. I didnt realise because my friends had asked first because he knew where we was going and i asked for "same again".

The guy then asked me to pay £20 on the spot. He had to let me out to get the cash from a cash machine and kept my friend on the other side of the barrier to make sure i didnt leg it. rolleyes.gif Now i got home about 3 hours late and told my parents about the fine. Needless to say im now grounded cussing.gif . But today my dad asked me what happened them told me he shouldnt have fined me on the spot because im under 18. It should have been in the post dry.gif .

If anyone knows what should have happened can you tell me? I got an offical-looking slip but it the saying something about attaching that to the letter or something. blink.gif

I wouldnt have a clue, but thats just stupid imo, so what if you got a childs ticket your still young.

I have no clue whatsoever. That stinks dude.

You got scammed.

By Gibble00 on 24/03/2008
I don't know, but I guess since it's just £20 I personally would just let it go and not worry about it. I don't think you'll be able to do anything really.

its illegal for public transport to deny you transport if you don't have the money, they have to mail it to your house

I think what he did was illegal. What is the cut off age for a "child" ticket anyways? Isn't it normally like 18? 16 at the minimum anyways.

Honestly though, how often do they inspect for tickets? I know that for me, the odds are low enough that I could not buy a ticket for the bus and even if I do get caught, the amount of times I would have to ride the bus are pretty high so I'd save money by paying the fine rather than buying a pass.

Yep i never get checked, the only reason i Got checked was becuase the machine wasnt working and i couldnt get throught the barrier because of it

Pay attention next time.

It may have been stupid... but you can't blame the guy for doing his job.

I didnt say i didnt deserve the fine, i know i did, im just wondering if anyone knows if its illegal to make an under 18 pay the fine on the spot, because that is what ive been told. If it is then he wasnt doing his job he was taking advantage of it to make £20. THEN i can blame him

Ah, I see.

Well, I wasn't really implying that you neither deserved nor didn't deserve the fine.
Honestly, I cannot say for sure whether or not it is legal because I rarely ride trains, and do not live in Europe. However, judging from what I do know, I can conclude that you wouldn't have been put in the position to (possibly) be scammed if you had payed attention in the first place.

He may have scammed you and took advantage of your inexperience... Or he could've just been doing his job and applied what he'd been told to do.
Eitherway, the consequences are obvious (justified or not) and you have learned from them.

The rest is up to you.

Haha wow, what a crime hash.png

I don't honestly know what his rights are, but I doubt you can do anything about it at this stage. I don't see why he shouldn't be able to fine you, even if the rules are stupid.

Getting grounded for it is ridiculous though. If your parents seriously think that ground-worthy, I feel sorry for you.

I've been on train journeys when they haven't even bothered checking the ticket =p
