Well my life is ruined
By Stokenut on 08/07/2009
For the past few days I've been really ill. I've put it down to a combination of hay fever (which I've never had before, but guessed) and flu.
About 2 days ago I've started becoming really breathless. Extremely painful coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in my chest. My mum suffers from Asthma and it's only obvious to assume it's hereditary.
I haven't been able to sleep for more than a few hours recently. I wake up short of breath and I'm kinda worried I'll stop breathing in the night or something. I'm going to make an appointment with the doctors today. As I type this I'm gasping for air but breathing in too deeply or out too far causes me to cough painfully and uncontrollably.
The reason this completely fucks me over, though, is because if this is asthma then I can kiss my dreams (and last hope of making something of myself) of joining the Navy goodbye.
It's quite worrying for me. My life is going nowhere fast and this will just slow me down. Theres no way in hell I'll let myself still be in my current situation by time I'm 21. I'd rather die than spend my life working a boring dead end job day in day out for the rest of my days.

when things go down....the only way to go is up.
as for your life being ruined, i believe you're wrong, it has just begun,
its the choices that one makes that makes the man and not the principle behind it.
thus, raise yourself, survive this challenge. and move onto the next phase just around the bend.

There are tons of cool jobs that you can do if you have asthma
By Bassism on 08/07/2009
Steve, I had debilitating asthma until I was 16, so if you ever need to ask any questions about it, give me a shout.
As for your future, ever thought about uni? Or what about apprenticeships and stuff. This in no way endangers your future, it just sends it in another direction.
By Kecooler on 08/07/2009
Hay fever is a summer thing. Who knows... in a couple months you could be healthy as a horse again. Give it some time for things to bring up again, after all it's only been 2 days so it might not be so life-threatening.
There are many other jobs out there besides the Navy that don't require you sitting in an office in a penguin outfit 24/7... just look for something in the general range of what you're interested in and you're bound to come up with something.
You're not even 21. Think positively, there's many long years ahead to be enjoyed.

Everybody will have their rough moments in which they have to face reality, life will go on and until you yourself give up your life has not ended.
Striving after a dream is great, making striving after that dream your life however, is a lie to yourself.
By slayer123121 on 08/07/2009
I had both until about 14/15 now it's not as bad hayfever sometimes gets bad but i don't let it stop me doing stuff.
If you can't join the Navy like Owen said, think about Uni m8, Uni is a brillllliant laugh, full of partys/girls just how you'll like it lol

. Of course there is SOME work u need to do

Asthma can be a bit fickle; a friend of mine had one attack when he was nineteen, since then he's been perfectly fine. Yours sounds alot more serious, but wait and see what the doctor says, sometimes just taking daily meds is enough to keep it under control.

You don't have to worry about that; unless there's some other factor like being dead drunk or knocked unconscious it's impossible to die in your sleep from ashma. It can cause pretty nasty insomnia sometimes though, in my experience.

dont think thats asthma.....i have asthma and its not that bad, it just takes forever to get your breath back and its harder to keep going, but I've always been able to keep up so your problem sounds worse than Just Asthma.
By Back to Own on 08/07/2009
Alot of people have Asthma. I had a really serious problem with it when I was young.
Your future isnt endangered by it. So what if you cant join the Navy? Theres plenty of other things that you can do. You're still young, you have your entire future ahead of you.
I really hope it gets better.

Dont worry..life will get better man

I guess in some severe cases of asthma it can prevent you from doing some things, but with most cases it's treatable. I have a minor case of asthma and I run cross country and soccer. I just have to take a breath from an inhaler like 30 minutes before I run.
My dad had a worse case and he still surfs and he's ran marathons. There's some purple inhaler thing that basically makes it go away.
But as for you, I don't know of those symptoms really mimic asthma. It's possible if your asthma is hereditary and you are experiencing asthma attacks it could be set off from allergic reactions. Make sure you haven't gotten any new pillows/sheets, pets, etc that might cause it. It seems weird that all of a sudden you'd have asthma in such severity.
Anyway if it's tl;dr then I'm not doctor but it doesn't necessarily sound like you have a sure case of asthma and if you do it's treatable. Unless there's some rule in the Navy about not having asthma you should do fine there.

We've been spraying for fleas lately. Could well be a trigger for it.
We'll see what my doc says tomorrow.

There's no way its asthma. People are born with asthma and don't start getting it when they're 20. You're jumping to conclusions before you even know whether what your worrying about is something to worry about.
I know your mom has it. But even if it did transfer over to you it would be impossible to get a random asthma attack like this out of no where without any previous asthma symptoms in your life.
Asthma runs in my family. My brother had sever asthma as a child, in fact almost died at birth from it. His asthma inhaler is the pretty much the strongest on the market. It has a steroid in it that increases the strength of your lungs. I know a thing or two about asthma having a brother with severe asthma. I'm positive the doctor will say the same that what you have is not asthma. Probably a flu or hay fever like you said.

But you have sex with hot officewworkers in office jobs
I thought stokey loved that kind of stuff
By sgtswordfish on 09/07/2009
hey stokenut, i have the same thing you're going thru...
i just ignored it and even though its a constant battle, the benefit is to lead your life by example, eventually it will take a hold of you but if you do what is necessary you'll be fine
By Multikill529 on 09/07/2009
Asthma can keep you out of the military here in the US too, but only during the initial enlistment process, have 2 or 3 guys in my unit even who lied about having asthma, then admitted to it once they were in, and were just issued inhalers. So your life isn't necessarily over, just a thought.
Though from the sounds of your symptoms, it REALLY doesnt sound like asthma.

Ok Stoke my dear son
I can see what your saying but in my opinion its a slight over reaction "omg i has athsma my life is ruined" WRONG plenty of people manage to join the army ect while still being unwell there are plenty of diffrent jobs you can do all equaly cool and you will still be able to do then, i hope you can see past this downfall to reach a whole new height and a new mental strength within yourself i know you have the ability to go through this one problem irl, i belive in you and i think most other people do also so do what we expect and do what needs to be done.
You ever wanna talk to anyone pm me on here or on irc

Hi Steveypants
Make sure you take that bottle with you. I've been toxic poisoned before and it can be really terrible thing. One drop of what other people can eat a teaspoon of can be deadly to some people. You just might be extra sensitive to this stuff.
You really are a smart and resourceful person. You survived your childhood in a not perfect world and grew up to be a great person. You are a natural leader and there are many jobs that you could excel at. Your life is in the very beginning stages. Try to keep a clear view on all the great things you are and market yourself in the job market with those. Sometimes taking a job in a company that is huge but not your goal ending job is the way to go.
Talk to me on MSN or TS sometime.
I always love having you around.

I forgot to add that some people have allergy induced asthma. It "could" be that, but again, the chances are extremely low. And even if you do have that, there's no way for the navy/military to ever find out.
THIS IS IF YOU HAVE ASTHMA:
Get a strong one that is a long term, which works by strengthening the lungs before your asthma could act up. This way you will not show signs of asthma. You can take these inhalers when you wake up in the morning and/or when you go to bed. And you usually never need the inhaler throughout the day unless of course you somehow get an asthma attack.
PS the above is your worst case scenario. Stop over reacting.
By Eregion2 on 09/07/2009
It is possible for asthma to show up out of the blue when you're 20, it's just obscenely rare.
The flea spray sounds a bit more probable.

Doctor gave me some Amoxicillin to take 3x a day.
If i have another attack I have to call 999.

Wtf is amoxicillin gonna do for asthma? Amoxicillin is a penicillin like antibiotic, that they gave me for tonsilitis.
By Eregion2 on 09/07/2009
Penicillin and some other antibiotics can alleviate the swelling in the airways that causes asthma - I carry an EpiPen with me most everywhere I go.

Wouldn't an NSAID (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) or some steroids be better?
Seems alot like the doctor might not know what it is and is throwing antibiotics at it like they do quite often.
By Eregion2 on 09/07/2009
That's true, I only carry penicillin as a quick-fix to keep me breathing long enough to get to the ER. But I really don't know enough to say either way.

I an highly allergic to the Pyrethrins in flea treatments. Read this:
Pyrethrins are plant-derived insecticides and are common ingredients in flea-control dips and shampoos (2). Although pyrethrins have low toxicity in humans (EPA classified as acute toxicity category III compounds**), exposures have caused dermatitis and upper respiratory tract irritation (3). Allergic contact dermatitis and asthma, Piperonyl butoxide, an EPA acute toxicity category IV compound, frequently is added to pyrethrins to slow chemical metabolism. No published reports of eye injury involving pyrethrins or piperonyl butoxide were identified.
Also you may want to try natural remedies Using herbal shampoo that contains a combination of any of pine cedar, bergamot, rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus, citronella, juniper or geranium. Bathe pets in a mixture of warm water and ' DAWN Lemon Scented dish dertergent ' and 'Lemon Joy' dish detergent is a great flea killer and repellent. Avons Skin so soft also works Great just dab a cotton ball with the skin so soft on the you pet where you see the fleas Instant Death! I hope my advise helps you.

No idea, perhaps I'm lucky and it isn't asthma. We'll have to wait and see how I react to this stuff.
I also bought some bronchial mixture and sleeping pills to make sure I'll be able to at least be rested to be going into work.
