What has happened to WG
By JC on 07/08/2009
Let me start by saying this has nothing whatsoever to do with me, but it is observations of what I have seen and heard from others.
What has happened to the community spirit that was once so prevalent in WG? I don't just mean the nice friendly talking in IRC type, but more the going out of your way to help out a friend in your clan even if it is fairly inconvenient.
A good example of this would be today when a very old school member asked in #wg if someone could help them out to learn how to make some money as they had lost a bit recently:
[00:32:37] <WW> Would anyone be kind enough to take me to dag kings and mage with me and show me the ropes?
[00:33:02] <XX> just bout to do corp soz justin
[00:33:30] <YY> im td'ing
[00:33:51] <ZZ> i cannot
[00:33:53] <ZZ> i r f2p
[00:33:54] <ZZ> and inactive
So of those 3, only one actually couldn't help out, and the other two were just so focused upon getting richer that they couldn't care about anyone else. It wouldnt be so bad if this was a one off instance of these people thinking for themselves, but it seems that for allot of WG there is only 2 things in RS, Gaining money for themselves and Raiding with WG.
What happened to our friendly, help a brother out community?
This member then talked to me in PM and this is what he had to say:
QUOTE |
[00:42:21] <WW> grrr id be happy for just 5 mins of his time in there showing me then i could do it myself and he could go do his stupid corp [00:43:29] <WW> its that attitude that pisses me off and is exactly what makes wg such a crap community right now to be in |
As well as:
QUOTE |
wg is such a selfish community right now, any new or inexperienced member would get so fed up with the fact the players with the knowlege refuse to share it and make wg a better place to be |
And I can't say I disagree with him. Bar one or two members, this kind of attitude is shown in the majority of WG.
So I have to ask, what has happened to the community that once was WG? and what can we do to fix it?

Are we going to let this one example make people think our community is crap?
I like to think its exception rather than rule.
As someone who remembers the community, yes it's not like before, it is a more adult community and less about individual than the clan as a whole.
But people are still helpful and people are still kind.
By Lee on 07/08/2009
Yea, this is just one occasion. Yesterday, I was asking for someone to kill in BH, and someone went out of there way to let me kill them. Which was very nice of them.
By George on 07/08/2009
Exactly as Lee and Lordy said.
Whilst I agree that WG perhaps has modernised and we do focus on ourselves a lot more... I wouldn't say that our community has detiorated at all.
Atm people are doing monster-hunting a lot to gain money for the olympics, to help our community....

Hate to break it to you, but they are not doing it for the olympics. They are doing it for themselves.

Not all of them are doing it for themselves.

+1
I not only see what JC is referring to but meanness from some people towards others as well. Instead of a laugh with them, it is more about a laugh at them. Some have even taken the attitude of being better than others because of rank. I am sure if you read the forum you can see this.
Don't skirt the issues. If you aren't in the *in group* you can forget it. This is what needs to change.
I lost my temper at Lee yesterday cause I got so frustrated with him, but Lee in the end knows that I love him. We are long term friends. This isn't the kind of thing I am talking about at all. BTW Lee I'm sorry.

I know now.
If youi haven't noticed some decline in the last month then you might just be inactive. There are lots of things I see people not wanting to do for WG too. Like some don't want to participate in the skills olymics too.

I try to help when I can by lending out stuff at bh bank. You used Corp beast as an example. I'm one of the only people that does that regularly :s Are you directing this at me?
By Pyroclastic0 on 07/08/2009
I'm happy to help with what I know, and would have been happy to go to dks after but people had already offered to go with more experience than to go.

Hm, I've noticed this a lot as well. I don't think it happens so often that the community has become "crap", but to those telling JC that just because he only has one example this cannot be true is absurd.
I suppose he COULD go back through all the logs and look for examples that I'm sure he'd find, but he obviously found this to be the tipping point. Just because he doesn't have a multitude of quotes NOW doesn't mean that they were said before.
However, I don't think it's as bad as JC's post implicates. Yes, it's not as "personal" one could say, but I DO see a lot of help come from the IRC. It's not much of the "No problem let me stop what I'm doing, I'll be right there," kind of help but more of the verbal "All right, you need this, this and this, and should do this, this, and this.
I mean just a few weeks ago Vephy died at TDs while moving his laptop and asked me to bless his grave. I INSTANTLY stopped what I was doing and ran my ass there and got there with seconds to spare. Obviously this is a pretty extreme case, but I think the principle applies since I was EPing at the time.
I would agree though that we're not as personal when it comes to helping people out, which can reflect poorly on the community.

Not at all Vephy, because you know the balence between helping others and Corping.
I think we all know which corp'er I'm quoting there

The biggest problem I see is a group of members who are very 'exclusionist' in the sense that they will take WG members to GWD, but *only* if they have the 'perfect' stats to do it or similar, and its the same with Any/All other bosses as well (corp/TD's etc.).
After posting this I've thought about it more, and it really is one member that is the main culprit, and I think we can all be sure he isn't making money for skill olympics, because frankly.... He can be extremely selfish.

Said member IS making money for the olympics.
The person is using some type of object to get 99 in his/her chosen skill for the olympics and it is going to cost this person 40m, so he/she is monster-hunting.
By VEPHYSAURAS on 08/08/2009
Well that is good to know I suppose. Partner of monster hunting is picking the best partners. I'm always searching for great players to corp with that have maxed stats. I'm will to let that idea slide a bit though, it gets kinda boring too and it is good to boss hunt with wg. I do see where he is coming from, but it is pretty selfish. Here is to hoping we have a good skill Olympics :]
