Scripts by members: Discuss?

By JC on 29/03/2008
Hi guys,

I had a small issue with scripts being run in #Wg_lobby today, so I though we had better have a think about who should be running what scripts, both in #Wg and #Wg_lobby.

The script I had a problem with was this:

QUOTE
<+Ty> Hey `Chainsaw35 ! Nice to see you and have fun in here =D

Now sure this looks like a nice thought from Ty, but the problem I had is that it seems incredibly impersonal to have a bot say hello to every person that join's our lobby. Personally if I have read a persons Intro I will make an effort to spend 5 mins talking to the person sometime before they apply so I really dont think they need a script to be made feel welcome in WG.

I would personally feel less welcome if I knew a script had been assigned to say hello rather than relying on peoples good will.

Another script that has caused contraversy is:

QUOTE
(21:06:21) <%Theevildead2> !hash noob
(21:06:22) <+Zeke|Dragonfudd> hash.pnghash.pnghash.pnghash.png#noob#hash.pnghash.pnghash.pnghash.png

As far as I understand it Bassism built the original of this script and was the original owner of it, now Zeke is also running it. When they are both in there it just creates unessacary spam, and when you ask Zeke to remove it he will never do so (and I wouldnt even dare ask owen to).

Basically do we want to supply a set of rules for scripts in IRC?

Lastly of all I should add I have no problems with passive scripts such as:

QUOTE
(21:12:13) * Theevildead2 slaps Ty around a bit with a large trout
(21:12:14) * +Ty takes the trout and whacks Theevildead2 to death!

Which I actually find entertaining..... but then you dont see that all the time.

The script by Ty is almost a rude way to welcome people, no matter who they are

The Hash Script was made by Owen but I agree that Ty's script might be rude.

I agree with evil about Ty's welcome script.
The second a future app joins the lobby and is greeted with that, there's a possibility that he will decide not to join after all.
It makes him feel (unsure how tyo put it) , a little unwelcome if an inanimate bot, a computer system without a human behind , is greeting him, instead of members.

As for the #HASH# script, it's good.
However when Owen and Zeke are in there it can get annoying. However Owens hardly ever in the irc anymore sad.gif

Also the past few days when you type !hash and Zekes bot answers it says something along the lines of "whoever typed hash go and die" or something. I think he removed that though ohmy.gif
FINALLY- Job also has a hash script too sad.gif

I think the point I am trying to make here (its 36+ hours since I last slept so I might not make 100% sense) is that we need universal rules for who can have scripts and what they can do.

I think some basicis to start with would be:

1) All members must seek the approval of a Tertiary leader or higher before running any script in #WG or #Wg_Lobby

2) All scripts must be passive, unless they are run by a specified WG bot.

3) There may not be any conflicting commands (Ie. we have a thread which contains the list of active scripts and the commands to use them)

4) No-one may invite their bot into either of the WG chatrooms without prior approval of a Tertiary leader.

Thats all I can think of atm, though I am sure there is more that I havent thought of.

I thoroughly agree Evil.
Tbh I had a set of IRC rules like this in my old clan for scripts and stuff that I created, you pretty much summed it up above.
Also we only need one stats bot in #wg and #wg_lobby and that should be runescript or a SWIFT IRC supported bot.

I've told Ty numerous times not to use scripts, if you catch him with them on, tell him to turn them off..

By JC on 29/03/2008
Okay....

Now that we've soprted that we dont want Ty running scripts what rules do we want to set Universally regarding scripts? We cant just tell Ty 'no scripts' if there is no official rules on them.

I agree with Evil on this. The 'welcome' script may seem nice, but feels very impersonal. I know that when I'm there I do try to greet every one who enters, and I don't use a script. Even a simple "hai <name> goes a long way to welcoming people.

I like the hash one because it's somewhat funny and not overused, but Ty's needs to go.

I had to kick a non-member for running scripts today:

QUOTE

(15:07:41) <Evil[AFK]> Hi, are you there?
(15:09:41) <Evil[AFK]> you have a min to respond or you will be kicked from #wg_lobby for running scripts
(15:11:13) <Evil[AFK]> okay, I am now Kicking you from lobby.... please turn off your scripts before returning

Here is what script I caught him running
