Activity Issues.

By JC on 08/10/2009
Okay, so we all saw the thread by Rachy here which has unfortunately turned into a name calling, mud slinging fest which I'm sure is not what Rach wanted to see when she posted it, so lets discuss it here.

I think the biggest problem at the moment is not a lack of activity within the staff but more that it appears that a large amount of the staff is inactive.

Perceived inactivity Versus Inactivity

Thats the main issue here. It is clear immediately that if I pulled up the Xp gains for a majority of staff I would have a list of people with the majority of them having little to now gains within the last week, but as Owen rightly pointed out council/staff are:

QUOTE

choosing to be Forum/IRC active instead of getting 99 Slayer.

And this is where the problem arises.

WG's current balance is a group of staff who under allot of pressure both In Real Life (IRL) and as a Staff Member for WG, which is resulting in a group of people who do not have time to play the game that the majority of the rest of the clan revolves around. This results in a perception of a leadership team that is lagging behind in one of the most important factors in any RS clan, Activity.

Why is RS activity so important?

RS activity is the cornerstone of the community in WG, there is nothing in my eyes that is more important than see'ing clan members & staff playing RS as much as possible. If you're on RS, you're on IRC which inevitably means you're helping to build WG's community, which sadly seems to be suffering at the moment.

Staff being around is very important for our community.

So what do I think should change?

WG Desperately needs a re-balance of the way everything is working, if staff (specifically council) can't find time to play runescape something is going wrong. I can understand that staff work needs to take priority at times, however WG members do not see most of that and as a result we only see the bad that I have listed above, the lack of visible activity on RS & IRC.

Spending time on RS and on IRC should be treated as one of the tasks that staff should be doing every time they can. Just like a company, interactions between the higher & lower echelons are hugely important for everything to function properly.

If thats not practical currently, do we need more staff? is there too much to be done with the current 'crew'? are the systems that WG currently uses not doing their job if its slower/more complex than it would be without them?

Whatever the issue is, it is really important that WG members get more 'face time' with council, because at the moment I think people are really wanting that.

Finally, good shout. Everytime I log on forums, and IRC, im on RS. Finding something I can kinda AFK todo whilst doing my duties.

I try my hardest to maintain WG and RS activity, and sometimes it feels like I'm the only one.

It's hard.

I'm obviously one of the staff who has lower experience gains but I still think I'm doing alright in terms of in-game activity.

I'm on the IRC and forums every single day. I'm doing my administrative work all the time. I'm playing the game for at least 2 - 3 hours a day, sorry if some of you don't think that's enough time. My exp gains might not be the best because all I find myself doing is fishing shark, which isn't exactly the best way to gain xp. Seeing how I'm faced with assignments and readings almost daily for school I think I'm doing pretty good.

Terrible, step down. Now.

The reason people are in a clan is to play with other people... not everyone enjoys cutting virtual trees by themselves. I could care less if people aren't very rs active as long as they attend events and manage to do their clan work.

Makes me think...

Well I think it is very important if you make a commitment you stick with it. As in hosting an event, SHOW UP. Or if you can't find a staff member that will be online to host it.

We need to show we are responsible, maybe it isn't really appearing active but making the right appearances.

I think I need to stress there was a very big message in this post, I'm not saying step up or step down but I am saying that it is your job to be both IRC and RS active.

You're not doing your job if you hop on IRC & RS once a day to be at an event, I'm sorry Randy but in my eyes (and most of the rest of the clan's) hopping on once a day isn't perceived as active. What happens when someone joins the lobby and asks for a war/pkri etc? Oh it's left to the other Raid Leaders who are doing more than just being on for events.

Dissapointing from one of our newer Raid Leaders frankly, espescially since you would know better. I'm pretty sure if you'd been council atm and a new raid leader had taken that stance you would have followed it up with a quick 'change your attitude or step down' reccomendation.

If you're just going to go 'oh I'm happy to be inactive' maybe naming and shaming is going to work better.

Lol???

Ok, first of all, a clan's activity is not measured on how much the members afk at a bandits spot. Whatever the players do outside of the clan isn't our business and personally I could care less what skill you're training. The activity of a clan as a whole comes from the members (staff included) showing up to events. I went through a whole council term barely playing runescape solo, but I still showed up to every event I could, and did my share of work. Like I said, people are only here to be in the community and play with others, that's the only responsibility they have. Every time I log onto runescape, I literally have less than 3 WG members online at a time.

People enjoy different things in this game, and playing solo is not one of mine. I'm sure many people in WG share the same beliefs as I do. Yes I'm a new raid leader, and I will make sure I create events and lead them, but you're disappointed that I'm not growing tomato plants right now???

Look at number 6 on the list. Are you open to me telling you that I think your not active? It seems me saying anything like this has really shaken you. It was a motivational post to ask you to be more active. Clearly in my rights to make as a member of the clan. As you all probably are aware, I talk to most of the members and they come to me with issues to discuss. Do you think I am the only one that is behind the post?

This leads us to 7. Stress. If me coming to you with a simple request stresses you out what will a major issue do?

Number 8. You knew the hours it would take to be council. You had to read this. I think it is not to much to ask that you spend time with clan mates. I didn't tell you how to spend "your time" that is "your" choice. If you want to cut trees with a few clan mates great, if you want to hang in irc and joke then go for it, if you can attend events that are scheduled or do some impromptu thing then go for that. It is your time that you are willingly volunteering to serve with the clan. Just make an effort to really be around and not just say I am in IRC. When you don't chat to us or even bother to respond to us at all. You should not be to busy to at least try to make an effort.

Number 9. I sent all of council a forum pm. Not one of you sent a response back to me. That is such a crappy thing to do to me. I didn't deserve to be ignored. If you are ignoring my pm then you are probably ignoring other things as well. I even posted a lil thing about it on a thread that I locked. I thought that might get some of you to respond. When I confronted George it was ohhhh we chat in lvl 4. Who care if you chat in lvl 4, I can't see that at all and you needed to respond to me. This is not a issue that needs your response now cause it is out dated. arghhh.

QUOTE

If any staff or member would like to discuss this further, please pm me in irc or on the forum.  I am always open for discussion.   Since only 2 event leaders responded to the forum pm that I sent to all of council and I think almost everyone in staff, I don't look for any response to this either.  I was under the impression that Council would reply to all pm's sent to them.  I guess I'm not one they want to chat with.

I'm not going to go on and on, but I think you can all see my points to why the other post got made. I actually like all of you. Everyone in staff has their own very good qualities or you would not be there. Just take a step back and re-think what the members are seeing. I'm sorry my bringing problems to your attention is upsetting, but you ignore the hints the clan gives you all the time. Maybe in a joking way but still they tell you.

If I need to clarify anything, I will try to post responses.

That picture was from council elections, which I ultimately received; what that post directed at me?

It has been the same thing forever, all the council have these same rules.

Alright, wasn't sure why you put that in a post that was a rebuttal to Randy's (at least that's what I think you did) when hes a raid leader and not council. Unless it was a reference to his part about being council before.

By rachellove9 on 09/10/2009
This has all gotten blown way out. I'm sorry I even tried to motivate anyone. Things are beginning to seem much more clear to what I should be doing. Sorry I wasted your time with all the posting and I wish you all luck.
