McAfee slowing me down?

By txtawkin on 20/10/2009
Ok, so the guy fixing my computer calls me to tell me he ordered some parts. Then he says "I notice you are using McAfee, that may be part of the problem with your pc running slow." He suggests Spyware doctor since I am on the internet alot and go to strange sites. Or, if I need better virus protection than Spyware doctor offers, Norton basic for viruses is his second recommendation.
Opinions please?? sleep.gif

He says that McAffee slows you down and then recommends Norton to you as a secondary option?

How did he get his job?

By Nick on 20/10/2009
Do not get Norton. Would be a stupid idea. Norton is probably one the of the most publically named anti-viruses on the market and one that a lot of people who don't know about computers use. What does this mean? People who create viruses know that they need to at least get around Norton, which makes those who use Norton easier to infect.

Along with that Norton slows a computer down a ton, kind of like AOL stuff. It is like an infection in itself.

McAffee is a good anti-virus. If you want to try a different one, you can always try avast!. It is the best anti-virus that I have personally used and a lot of people in WG use it. It is completely free if you register on their site and request the Home version.

Your computer guy is an idiot though. neko2.gif

ahahahahahaha!
He recommends norton? my god that guy's a tool and a fail at a Computer techni.
Use avast for free if your feeling cheap, or buy AVG which I really like.

By Eregion2 on 20/10/2009
Avast! is the bomb. Last I checked it was better than Norton and also free, double plus.

By Quikdrawjoe on 20/10/2009
AVG > Avast > None hash.png

Gotta agree, I use Avast! myself and I've never had a problem. Free to use, quick install, doesn't use that much system resources.

Definitely try to get away from McAfee that's part of your problem. That program is almost labeled a virus itself...

"strange sites" LOL

By RobbieThe1st on 21/10/2009
Avast! works really well. You also should be using a firewall like ZoneAlarm free or COMODO firewall.

By Maxrobinsun on 21/10/2009
Can believe he recommended Norton but still

Like everyone else said use Avast! or AVG.

Personally I use AVG and Comodo

By Groedius on 21/10/2009
Id say the same thing Kathy i had a version of McAffee on my laptop and it lagged it to the stone age However i would DEFINITLY not go near Norton with a barge pole. I would recommend what every1 else has said i personally use avast and Spyware terminator and have never had any problems with speed or not being able to get rid of viruses.

You yourself should know the answer to that. This is Microsoft we're talking about, remember?

Am I the only one who found that funny?

Really though, I'd just get rid of it full stop. I don't run any anti virus software, never have never will. You have to be pretty stupid to get a virus in the first place. Malicious software doesn't just download itself, install itself and execute itself without you telling it to do so.

Completly disagree there was a time when just going onto the Runehq page it activated a mouse clicker virus which is easily hidden within the website or even just by clicking an add or opening an email id say it is much better to be safe and get an antivirus then not use one at all you most likely have atleast 1 virus on your pc id be extremely suprised if not with the amount of porn you watch Steve LOLOLOL.

I don't suggest using McAfee. Every day or whenever it auto-scans your computer, it keeps a back-up file of EVERY FILE it scanned. After a bunch of these scans, there's so many back-up files that your computer is slowed down dramatically.

Trust me, I had the same problem when I used it. If you want another virus scanner, try AVG. I don't use it myself but I hear its good. Plus its free.
