December 15th - Server Upgrade.
By RobbieThe1st on 30/11/2009
Our server is getting kind of old; it needs to be upgraded. As such, I am going to do a major upgrade on the week of the 14th, time permitting.
This is going to mean that for the duration of the move we will have:
1. No forums
2. No website
3. No Robbiebot
4. No TS
I am going to try to do it during the week, being as there will be less need for these things, however I have a couple of facts influencing this whole thing:
One, I should be getting DSL at our new place on the 14th sometime between 8AM and 12PM. Until I have DSL setup, I will not be able to have access to the Internet, and therefor no way to do the move. If for some reason we can't get DSL at our place(even though the installer is coming out on the 14th), it may be a while before I can get our satellite dish setup at the new place.
Once I have actually started the transition, it should not take too long. If everything goes smoothly, I could have the forums/website back up in an hour, and Robbiebot up soon after that. But, I have no clue how it will go, having never migrated from CentOS 4.8 to Ubuntu 9.10 before.
I am giving you all plenty of warning because of this, so mark the date down, and try to figure out a way around it. Bythe 14th, it would be nice to have:
1. Everyone availaible to use Mumble, on a free server, or TS, on someone else's server
2. Some form of IRC moderation availaible; either a couple of people voicing and inviting, +i turned off, or something.
Please post any and all plans here, let me know what you all figure out
-Robbie

I'll do my best to run IRC & my scripts that week, so as long as you have people there for voicing, thats the invite problem solved.
By Jayson on 30/11/2009
we should be able to have active people voicing, thanks for all the stuff you do robbie, you have probably contributed the most to the clan (maybe second behind gene

)

Thanks for the heads up

I enjoyed using Ubuntu, only problem was it's lack of compatibility with certain programs I use and WINE didn't cover them.

Five more days. Be aware.
By His Lordship on 09/12/2009
Of course, we'll be needing to advertise that 100% of our communication will be over IRC and RS... not that this affects me.
By Nick on 10/12/2009
There is always the clan chat in RS to use too.
Thanks for everything Robbie.

Why don't we use Z6 as a backup?
By Planolocal on 11/12/2009
Tight, I wanna use mumble.
By Mmangler on 11/12/2009
Thanks for the warning IT changes usually mess me up. Oh well progress must be made.
By His Lordship on 11/12/2009
A 1 day down time is npt worth a forum switch, which it is since most of these guys came after z6.
By RobbieThe1st on 11/12/2009
Yea, really.
The forum switch part of it shouldn't take that long; its going to be the other stuff(Robbiebot, Mumble) that will take some configuring.

Thanks Robbie for the update link for firefox. I used it.
I'm sure you will have it all together in no time.

Update:
Today, the Qwest tech was supposed to come out today, between 8am and noon. I get up before 8 am, get everything ready. I get my computer all setup, test my networking cables, and wait.
At 9:45, the guy calls and says that he will be a while, but confirmed that he will be arriving.
A bit after noon, he shows up!
He takes his hand-held, clips it to the phone circuit on the side of the house, goes "Yup, good enough", tells us that our modem is arriving via UPS, and leaves.
Talk about anti-climax.
A few hours later, the modem arrives, and after some messing, I get it setup and working.
I now have 1.5M/768K DSL. Eh, not the greatest, but it works. I'm getting >150KB/sec down, fairly consistently.
---------------------------------------
So, thats the first part of it out of the way.
However, I'm kind of tired and not in the mood to do this whole server shuffle after getting up at 8AM, after around 6hrs of sleep. On top of that, I really want two days availaible to do it properly, and it seems I may be heading back to our old place Tomorrow. Or not, depending on how the weather holds out.
So, I may be able to do it tomorrow, or it may be next week. *sigh*. Things never work out how you expect them too.
At least I have DSL. Thats a great relief.

See IT strikes again.
By RobbieThe1st on 18/12/2009
Well, I got the server switched over... to some extent. The forums are up, at least.
