THAT, my fellow chess virtuosos, is Taikyoku Shogi. 1,296 squares and 209 unique pieces of sheer sake-consuming awesome. There are 253 unique moves which must be memorized, as well as strict hierarchies of upgradable pieces. And the game also incorporates TWO members of royalty, a king and a crown prince, so if you thought you'd just have to checkmate ONCE then you're just retarded!

Biggest board game ever, dated to Japan in the 16th or 17th Century.

You know you want to play it.

The pieces are awesome too. Ancient dragons, fire demons, burning chariots, tiger soldiers, buddhist spirits, flying geese, capricorns, flying horses, venomous wolves, mountain witches, northern/southern/eastern/western barbarians...

It's like dungeons and dragons from like the 1600s!

All the pieces look the same to me.

Technically one move per turn, which I suspect was done with much greater rapidity than we're used to seeing in modern chess. While I can totally imagine finesse being a factor, there must be huge offenses going on in one of these games. There are also pieces that can make more than one move as part of their turn, allowing them to maneuver around linear obstructions to make quick strikes.

If I played it though I'd probably want to make 10 moves per turn or so. ph34r.gif

Goddamn, get this:
QUOTE
The great general, vice general, rook general, bishop general, violent dragon and flying crocodile may jump over any number of pieces, friend or foe, along a diagonal or orthogonal. They capture all pieces they jump.

However, they may only jump pieces of lower rank, whether friend or foe.
Stratego just shat itself.

Fire demons in Tenjiku Shogi (16x16) have an AoE attack that wipes out all adjacent enemies surrounding where they land at the end of their move. But if a fire demon attacks a fire demon, the attacking demon is incinerated.

This ability isn't available in Taikyoku Shogi, but it's cool anyways.

Find an online version and I'll play you a game to try it?

I deem this topic worthy of surviving my House of Random Plague of RickRolls.

The far East never ceases to amaze me.
