[Password Scam] 'Jagex' Emails

By JC on 05/03/2011
Hi Guys,

As some of you have heard and may have even seen there has been a set of emails claiming to be from 'Jagex' coming around over the past few weeks which suggest you have been breaking the rules in some way and that you are required to appeal these offences through a link given in the email (as per below):

I cannot stress this enough:

Jagex will Never email you in regard to offenses on a Runescape account

Their policy on emails is clear, see: Home>Customer Support>Safety & Security Guidelines>Security Information

QUOTE
To help you be sure that correspondence from us is genuine, we send all messages to your RuneScape Message Centre. This is accessible in the Account Management section of the website (under the 'Account' drop-down menu), or by clicking here, and will require your RuneScape in-game login details (again, please be sure that you are at RuneScape.com).

  •     We never send emails saying we need your password to check you aren't cheating!
  •     We never send emails saying we need your recovery-questions to check you didn't steal the account.
  •     We never send emails containing attachments of any sort.
  •     We never send emails saying we need your password to let you join the Jagex staff.

Jagex has a perfectly good system for notifying people of issues like that, it's the pm inbox built into the game, the one that you can see when you log into the lobby.

These emails are whats known as a 'Phishing' scam, they are basically trying to trick you into thinking that it's the genuine site that you are familiar with and as a result you are happy to enter your account details into it, have a look at the picture below... Can you tell what's wrong with it?

Thats right, it looks very very similar to the official Runescape page and the only difference I can spot is up the top in the link.... "Runesnape.com"

As I have said above, these sites are designed to look *exactly* the same as the sites you are used to to get your password

So really, the key points are:

  • Don't trust any email that claims to be from jagex about your account, they'll just use your RS inbox for that kind of thing
  • Don't trust any links directing you to the Runescape website. If someone really wants to direct you to something on the RS site they can give you a 'Quick Find Code' for forums (dodgy forums links were a common scam) or tell you where it is (Such as under account management).
  • Don't trust that an email says it was sent by "Jagex Ltd" or similar, the address and email is 'sent by' can easily be faked
  • Check where links in emails are taking you, even if it says it will be going to one place it can take you to another (look closely at the image below from a scam email I got, it says it's going to 'battle.net' yet the actual place it's taking me is on bottom, so it's actually going to 'Battrle.net'). In most email clients if you hover your mouse over a link it will show you where it actually takes you to as per below:

It's really important that you guys take note of this, one WG member was very lucky today to catch onto what he had done before he had lost anything but several other people I know have lost a significant amount of items as a result of this scam.

Please be careful, don't be the next person to fall for this.[QUOTE]

Yeah for some reason I get WoW phishing emails (as you probably recognised from the link comparison lol) despite the fact that I have *never* had a WoW account hashdown.gif.png

Very needed post, thank you Jc. This morning I fell for it, luckily with the help of JC and a few others I came to realize I was in for it. Changed my pass, everything is safe but I hope this post can help save others too.

I was unaware this phising scam went as far as to targeting emails. Every little detail is important now.

can someone tell me what the fuck is it with the barraged frogs?

By Woof on 05/03/2011
This is -exactly- how Squirrelster got hacked except the website was serviices.runescape.com or something SUPER close to the original. Guys, if you're any bit worried make sure that you have a Bank Pin and just don't open any of these emails. I've been lucky, I've had ZERO.

Thanks JC! wub.gif

Got the exact email was fucking weird.

By RobbieThe1st on 06/03/2011
1. Never click on any links in emails unless you -know- who they are from and what they are for. Same with attachments.
2. If you get an email like this and are worried, open up a -new- tab, type in "runescape.com" manually, and check from there. -never- click on the link.

Follow those two rules and you'll be safe.

Its not only imageshack logo, it says something like "Domain unregistered. To view this image, resigter on bit.ly/register-domain" or some shit like that.
