Promoting events in the IRC new system?

By George on 03/05/2008
Today Glenn brought something to my attention that I thought was actually a very good idea.

Currently I am often asked by members in the IRC when the next events are.
Yes we have a clan events forum, however when a member is quickly asking this, it is so irritiating when they get a response of "look in the clan events forum".
We used to have a calendar on the z6 forums, however due to our new technology, server and forums this can no longer be used in the same way, since it does not show up at the bottom anymore.

Wouldn't it be so much easier to know which events are coming up soon at one quick glance?

Well Arsenalfan32 (Glenn) has found a way, which I fully support.
Allow me to explain.

When entering the IRC, a bot appears giving you the name of upcomming events as well as a link to the relevant topics.
The message given by the bot can say anything and can be set by channel ops and half-ops (I believe, definately by ops) and is sent to everyone as they enter the IRC.

The Bot that does it:
There is a bot that does it for us, unless Robbie, Buzz, someone else would like to create a script for it.
The bot is called "Funaust" and for this to work, has to be present in the channel you want the message to apply to.

Here is a conversation I had with him earlier about it and some more details:

QUOTE

(19:18:07) Private message with Funaust
(19:18:09) <Gorgemaster> Well
(19:18:14) <Gorgemaster> you are a bot in several channels?
(19:18:17) <Funaust> yes
(19:18:23) <Funaust> that is correct
(19:18:24) <Gorgemaster> how would we "employ" you
(19:18:40) <Gorgemaster> to message people as they joined a channel*
(19:18:49) <Funaust> which channels have you seen me on
(19:18:55) <Gorgemaster> #kod and #triforce
(19:20:39) <Gorgemaster> i'm sure I can get our technician to create the script
(19:20:49) <Funaust> i'll do it lol
(19:21:04) <Gorgemaster> its not definate
(19:21:10) <Gorgemaster> I need to talk to our clan council.
(19:22:31) <Gorgemaster> one more thing, how do we change the set message?
(19:22:43) <Funaust> simply type- !entrymsg messagehere

Won't it get damn annoying??
The bot can be turned off using a simple command that is given to you in the message that you are pm'ed with on entering the IRC channel
It's a simple command and will stop you being messaged with it

Why use it?
It will help massively with sign-ups including War sign-ups and Skill of the Week sign-ups and with event recognition and reminders in general.
This will altogether tackle inactivity issues in some members and increase attendance at wars/events.

As I said this is early days.
I need the input of Robbie to see if this is possible and the council to see if it is actually wanted.
I think it would be very helpful and useful.

I support this. It sounds like a good idea. We've been ranting about war sign-ups. Now upon joining, by simply copying and pasting a URL you can get to the page. Very easy.
EDIT: I have found out we do not need to employ this specific bot. I have heard from Dale that is a very easy task to make a script for this. We could use RobbieBot to do it possibly? I do hate to push more work on Robbie though.

Runescript has it aswell, not on join but you type !event I think.

I'd prefer !event because it would make it less spammy. Yes it's very easy to do and its a good idea.

It is sent through PM to you i think, Either way.. i support this.

I have good friends in KOD and seen them using it. I thought it was a good idea but just brushed it off. I think it will help us!

I support it also. and it seems alot easier. wink.gif

Spamming it is better than hoping that people type !event. This makes sure that they see it.

By RobbieThe1st on 04/05/2008
Well, yes and no - It would be very simple to have it NOTICE anyone on joining #wg(or #wg_lobby). Having it check a "allowed to PM" list would be harder, but not that bad, but I think this would defeat the purpose - we want it to annoy people into joining. I don't think that one message on joining would be too bad.

I could also attach it to a command( EVENT or NEWS).

Changing it with a command would be fine, just so long as you do it from #wg.

Having !event would be pretty much pointless when you can have a command which will assure that everyone who enters IRC sees the upcoming events.

By Zeth007 on 04/05/2008
I support the idea of having the pm sent to you when you enter.

By Troll84 on 04/05/2008
This seems like a good idea, i had something similar operating from my nick in my last clan, though it involved using !setevent and users typing !event having been told to do so in PM on join.

Robbie, could you not have it as part of the same system? Currently, when they join, if trial guardian+ they get invited. Surely it wouldn't be hard to add in a section of the script to socket (or whatever you use for your script) to the events forum and PM the topic title and topic link to $nick (or whatever you use scriptwise tongue.gif)
