The press & the royals.

By Dallar on 29/04/2011
I have had quite enough of all that royal wedding stuff. All that has to do with the royals.. I don't know with you guys but in Denmark the royal family are everyday talk even though they have no constructive function in Danish society other than travelling, looking funny in their hats and using our money for their way of living.

I know that 95% percent of my hatred is because of the press blowing every small detail up like it was a fucking sensation.

Here's some quotes from danish headlines directed at the royal wedding in England:

"Kate Middleton looks very happy"
"Prince calls his future wife beautiful" (They actually don't know.. They assume he said it because they lipsynched him at church.. fml)
"Newly wed couple are very happy"

Now to quotes from danish headlines from the danish baptize

"Baby's skin looks very smooth"
"Both babies didn't scream"
"Meet the taylor of the babytwins shoes"
"Here's the earrings the crownprincess wore"

Just a few...

On top of that Danish television hosted a 2 hour long documentary about the hats all the guests wore..

Taking out 24+ plus of normal television broadcast to cover a royal wedding is just insane. INSANE!

What are your opinions on all this royal mumbo jumbo and what do you think of the press' way to handle it?

By seb on 29/04/2011
some of the british headlines were a bit stupid too, like i saw this on msn news

*william cracks a joke*

but all the same im happy for them, and I think the british have a greater respect for their royal family than the danish, and maybe other nations like the swedish, becuase the british love to hold on to their centurys old traditions.

It's all bullshit. Nobody cares. Some pampered idiots getting married? Who gives a flying fuck? They contribute nothing to society.

The fact that there's still a monarchy in the UK is pretty sad. Get it together Brits.

This. I couldn't care less about what's going on.

Atleast we should feel happy because our hard earned money gave Kate Middleton a nice dress.

Wow, uber amount of anti-monarchists in WG ohmy.gif... or so it seems.

I agree the press blow shit up, but that's their job, they are competing against every other newspaper/tv station for their readers/viewers, so have to do that to ensure that they 'win'.

As for the Royal Wedding, I consider myself pretty British, and I watched the whole thing from like 8am - 4pm neko2.gif (Agreed, i wouldn't have watched it like a hawk if i hadn't been ill, but i still would have watched the ceremony probs)...
The reasons I agree with it being hyped up so much are twofold:

1. Prince William + Kate are the future King and Queen of England, it was always going to be huge. He will be the ruler of Great Britain, one of the most influential superpowers in the world in a matter of years.

2. At this time of recession, rising crime, rising unemployment etc, the country, and to some respect, the world, with over 180 countries watching it, all united against these global problems to forget all that for a day. Aren't people allowed to be happy, even if it is for just a few hours?

My thoughts. Don't hate.

I know and I agree.. But don't think the press pushes it a bit too much when they start analyzing every other detail? "oh and the building they just drove past is made of limestone which is very unusual in this neighbourhood"

I mean.. Shut the fuck up and cut to the chase.

Like I said they take out 16 hours of a normal day to broadcast the wedding. I am very happy for them that they are getting married but if we left out all the irrelevant details the broadcast could easily be boiled down to 4-6 hours.

And all the repetations.. Instead of doing it over and over again the same day please do a documentary or something and show some other day. I don't see the idea. It costs alot of money.. Money that could have been spent on uniting people out in the big world.

The royal family do alot of charity work and travelling to poverty effected countries, you cant say they do nothing for society thats just bullshit

By Espen___11 on 29/04/2011
I had to watch this shit in english class today sad.gif sad.gif

By Lee on 29/04/2011
'oh the monarchy is stupid. cant believe they still have that in england'

They amount of money they bring to the UK is 10 times what they cost us. YES 10 TIMES. Theyre a massive tourist attraction.

Royal wedding was shit, yes. But its important to our country. Same as all that shit that your presidential candidates do. Spending millions of dollars on campaigns thats paid for by corrupt billionaires, just so that they can have the laws put through congress...

Maybe yours do but ours don't cash in + they are not that big a tourist attraction in Denmark.

By Dallar on 29/04/2011
Let's try and keep a civil tone towards eachother.

Topic cleaned.

By seb on 30/04/2011
I agree with lee, without the royal family, england would get a very reduced amount of profit from tourism. and with the current cuts being made, the consequences would be catastrophic.

also, i think the wedding was mainly put in proportion on english TV, (I dont know about other countries) becuase considering when price william becomes king, over 50 countries will offically recognise him as the head of state, not tiny islands, important countries like canada, australia, jamaica (for the cannabis), so it really sould be a very big thing, becuase if you think about it literally, he will be one of the most powerful + influential persons in the world.

also, anyone else think pippa middleton had a sexy ass?

By tumpelo on 30/04/2011
I approve of the royal family because of the money they bring into the country, the charity work they do, for traditions sake, and that our troops would be fighting for David Cameron instead of Queen and Country if we removed them.

I don't really feel that strongly on the subject though. Meh.

By Colinwarrior on 30/04/2011
"Royalty is good for us because they are a tourist attraction"

Lol. Well I guess I can't argue with that logic. Good show ol' chaps!

Yes I agree, but again, if they cut it down to 4-5 hours they make less money... there's nothing wrong with the BBC or Sky or CNN making money for broadcasting one of the most important days of the year for millions of people to the whole world neko2.gif

King and Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth Realms.

The Welsh, Scots and Northern Irish (and possibly some Commonwealth royalists) will rape you for that comment.

BTW I'm not a royalist, but as others have said, the royal family do far more good for the UK than bad. The money they bring in off the Crown Estates alone (which all goes to Parliament) outweighs the money given to them from taxes more than twice over. And that's not even including the money they bring in via tourism.

Two things from me.
Damn you antimonarchist. Im proud to be british. And the queen is part of our british culture always have been. In reference to the Danish royal family. No offence Dallar thats just because no one has heard of Denmark.. They did not have an empire that covered half the glove they had very little.
British Queens have always been great historic figures. From Bodiccea to Queen Victoria. I dont think there anti-monarchist i just think they dotn really understand what it is to be british.

As for your second point.. WoW.. George... Please learn your politics. We may think we're not a super power. We havnt been since the 1950s. Ye the world still knows were here hell we scared the shit out of russia in the 80s. BUt we not a super power. turn of the 20th century we were. At the end we are not. We are a major power yes. But superpower no. Theres only one super power atm. The US. China isnt quite their yet.

I do believe Australia is in the process of removing connections with the british monarchy. I do believe she was on your 5$ bills and then was removed?

But influential no. The British Monarchy has no powers. We are a Consitutional Monarchy. They havnt had any power since Charles I. It was shown all over the world because it is world news. The British Royal Family is the most famous in the world. THink about it when you think of britain you think of the queen. Its only Natural that a King of Englands marriage would be shown.

Now. I wait for the morning when you all reply.

Tom...
I'm not an antimonarchist rofl, how did you get that from my comments!? ohmy.gif

Many people still consider GB to be a superpower. Idgapos about technicalities. biggrin.gif

I don't dispute everything else you said, but...

When I think of Britain, I think of stuff like all the good rock bands that have come from there, comedians like Monty Python and Benny Hill, my friends from WG, etc....just throwing that out there..lol
