Looking For A New Laptop

By EckZr on 07/06/2008
wrong forum section, I know but it seems Ex-Members dont get permission to post in Tech Room. So bite me

I'm looking for a new laptop (not desktop) for gaming.

I plan on playing Warhammer Online when it launches with some rl buddies and old WoW pals so I need a computer that can handle that.

Memory, I could care less about. And i'm willing to spend up to $900 USD for it

anyone have any suggestions? I've looked around Sonys and Dells but cant find a good one.

By Kiwi011 on 07/06/2008
if its a laptop for gaming id look at a voodoo.

voodoopc.com or something like that. They have very nice laptops.

Either go the macbook route or go to Dell.

Honestly, HP, toshiba and whatever else out there all generally have old technology inside them. Don't buy from a big box store like best buy or futureshop or circuit city.

Buy online, that way you can choose what you're getting and you also get the latest stuff.

warhammer online is only gonna be fore the pc, so he cant go by macbook.

I totally agree with Georgio. Do not buy from a store like Best Buy or CompUSA. I bought an HP from them and it literally broke within months. The monitor wouldn't turn out when I needed it, so I just used it as a desktop.

If you're using it for gaming, try Dell again. I'm sure you could whip up a decent rig on their site.

You could also go for the MacBook Pro (I use that) and use BootCamp to install Windows on a partition of your HD and just boot into Windows when you feel like gaming. However if this is going to be a gaming laptop rather than a work laptop, stick with a PC for ease (that was hard to say).

For some reason Acer has been producing some pretty decent laptops, so you could look into them. I don't recommend buying anything that you've not customized, unless it's the same stuff you would have put in yourself.

You have $900 to spend on the laptop as a whole, or on memory alone? That would totally change everything.

Just some starting advice.

Dual boot.

Simple answer and fairly easy to do. I'm doing that with XP and Vista at the moment and all my friends with Mac's dual boot with Leopard and either XP or Vista, usually Vista.

Lets see. $900 is the max price, so lets keep it at that. American Dell I'm assuming. I'm going for Dell, mainly because they have so much experience, they have good customer support, they are cheap, and you get what you pay for.

Now, Gaming Laptops (XPS) start from $999. Since that's over your limit, I'll check out Inspiron...
Now, it's very hard to get a gaming laptop at $900 from customisable options like Dell, I'd go with Georgio.

Closest "Gaming" laptop with Dell is at $1099, and it isn't too great:

Inspiron 1720
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® Vista Home Premium Edition SP1
VIDEO CARD 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
MEMORY 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
HARD DRIVE Size: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)

That's at $1099, $33 a month.
A bit higher, and it isn't really "Gaming", but I think it might meet the specs.
256mb 8600 GT card should be enough
2GB Memory, and the processor should be enough I guess, I couldn't bump it any higher, a bit too much.
Hardly any accessories added.

Meh.

i could care less about memory storage, screen size and whatever
hell, i dont even buy warranties

i just care about the speed and graphics right now

i'm not sure how to determine how good a graphics card is but is a 256mb gfx card considered good right now?

and i plan on getting at least 2gb of ram

By David on 08/06/2008
Memory is speed. You'll be able to process things faster with more memory, but 2 GB is good enough for most games.

Try to get something with a good processor (2.5-2.6+Ghz is good) which will help a lot with gaming.

To determine the quality of a V-card look at it's clock speeds. 512MB doesn't mean it's a good card, just means it's got memory. Find some cards that are ranked as decent gaming V-cards, and then check their specs out online. Go for the one that is cost effective and has good specs.

Sorry, while there may be other reasons why not to buy from a retail store, your HP dying on you cannot be added to the list.
If you buy a HP laptop from CompUSA, its not any different from the same model HP laptop you get online.

Personally, back when CompUSA was still in buisness around here, we bought several high-end(at the time) desktops from them, and bought the warranty also - We ended up using the warranty several times, and were quite happy with their service - Sure, it cost a bit more, but when your motherboard dies for no reason, its much nicer to be able to say "Here. Fix it."

Of course, now I buy everything from Newegg or ebay, and figure that if it fails on me I will either get Newegg to RMA it, or get out the soldering gun and fix it.

As a note, I am still running one of those high-end machines, although its in a different case and has some different stuff, basically its the same system.

Back to the subject of this topic, I first would ask if you *really* need to be able to game with the latest and greatest on your laptop - If it is possible, I suggest getting an older and cheaper laptop for when you need portability, and build a high-end desktop for gaming - You can get a *much* better system for the same amount of money that way.

If you go the dell route, go to notebookreview.com they have coupons for dell, like $250 off ove $999 dollars, could raise your limit a bit.

By EckZr on 10/06/2008
i ran into an ad on some site for a Dell

how does this look?

-Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache)
-15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display with TrueLife™
-2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
-128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS
-80GB 5400RPM Hard Drive

only $824

By JC on 11/06/2008
It really depends on what you intend to do with the laptop, but if you intend to do any really high end gaming on that.

The main problem I see is that graphics card, being in a laptop it is probably an 8400 GS M (M for mobile) which aare fairly crap to be honest. I am not sure exactly what spec's Warhammer online will require, but I am willing to bet that an 8400 GS will not run it very well, if at all.

The processor and RAM are both fine, the processor actually is very good compared to the rest of the computer.

If it was me buying a laptop aimed at gaming, my priorities would be like this:

1) Processor
2) Graphics Card
3) RAM
4) Hard Drive

The problem with having a not so great graphics card, is unlike a Desktop it is impossible to treplace them as they are built onto the motherboard. I personally would look for a laptop with an 8600 GS or better, sadly as prices vary depending on what country you are in I can't really go out and find one withion your price range for you.

--EDIT--

Just checked Dell NZ, and they quote $100 NZ to upgrade fromthe 8400 GS to an 8600 GT, which is well worth it. Even if you had to settle for a lower processor it would be worth it, as your current processor outclasses the rest of your computer by a long way. Do not forget a core2 duo is 2x 2.5ghz processor's with hyper threading, so it is extremely fast, my 2.13 Ghz Core 2 duo is by far fast enough, I manage to run most things on top graphics with it and an 8600 GT.

If you plan on running any type of game, that hard drive is going to screw you over big time... check the coupons on the site i posted, they change around thursday if there isn't one for you atm. You definitely need a bigger hard drive.

By Georgio9 on 11/06/2008
The 8400 GS probably won't cut it like Evil says but the amount of processing power may compensate for that.

The 8000 M series of video cards are not crap either. I'm running an 8600M GT card in my laptop at the moment and it fairs pretty well. I have a T7300 2.0GHz processor with the 256mb 8600M GT graphics card and 2GB of ram.

The latest game that I've tried running is Call of Duty 4 and it does so pretty well. The only beef that I have is with microsoft/nVidia for failing to create a driver that works flawlessly with Vista. I get quite frequent video driver crashes and always in the same areas too for some reason.

By Sum-41xx on 11/06/2008
Here u are, all u need is in here. It may be HP. But they are good for prices, this will be able to run Warhammer for sure.

I'll try doing a bit more searching.

And here is your disadvantage of the M series of graphics cards, they do not hav full driver support from either microsoft or Nvidia.

The cards themselves are fine, but most of the time you have to rely on the manufacturer rather than Nvidia or microsoft to provide driver updates (which they rarely do).

By David on 12/06/2008
What I meant bit Robbie is that at a retail store you have to be sure that what's in the machine really is what you want. As such you have to be much more careful. My dad and I made the mistake of buying one that looked good and had some good parts. We didn't buy the warrantee because we live in Africa (for only 2 weeks now!).

I know it's no different from the one online, but if you decide t buy online you can take your time. With the retail store, they might run out of them, or whatever reason and you might feel rushed.

I'm a techie at circuit city. You can get a very nice HP laptop with around 3GB RAM and 250-320GB harddrive which is great for gaming for around $700 and just look around for a better one. But I've played Warhammer 40k irl at a nerd shop a bit lol but that game would do fine. Toshibas are great if you wanna dish out the cash for the name. HPs are nice. There is a new Acer with 16 inch wide screen(first industry wide one for them), 3GB Ram 320 gig harddrive, with some bad ass processor and home theater sound system built in. I suggest that. Also on the left there is a little entertainment touch pad thingy, controlls sound, skips tracks/chapters in song/movies, and alot of other stuff.

Alienware.

Sure, they are a bit more expensive, but there's no competition when it comes to gaming machines.

A nice thing is the AlienExchange program that they have. You send them your old computer or parts and they will give you credit towards buying one of their computers. It could bring down the cost significantly.

Point 1) His Budget is $900

Point 2) These start to look really expensive when you factor in that you would need to install a new operating system.

Point 3) If you actually take a look at their proper spec list Here you will note that the 2 laptops you list both have:

"Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor"

Good graphics cards? I think not.

Point 4) A 13" screen is tiny, most other laptops offer a minimum of 15.4", preferably try to get one with higher than that too.

I have nothing agaisnt Apples/Mac's. I actually considered buying a Macbook Pro earlier this year to do some work on, but in the end you need to spend AT LEAST $2000 on one to get the spec level you would want.

the intel graphics isn't too bad on a mac. Things are set up differently inside a macbook compared to a pc laptop. It's no Geforce 8000 series card but it does the trick....well for CS source, that was the most intensive thing I saw running on it.

Um OS's aren't expensive at all. Everything is free on the internet and I can direct you to what you need and how to dual boot.

And ya you won't find what you need in a $900 price cap. Anything in that range won't run anything but vista if you ask me.

Okay, you are going to annoy people really quick saying things like that.

Personaly experiance can be valuable, but just because 'you' have a good sony laptop does not mean that 'everyone' has had a good experience with them.

I have used a sony vaio in the last year, and my impression of them is they are plasticy peices of crap, generally it's screen was crap, and it didnt feel durable at all. The keyboard on this one had actually broken after little over a year, and it had numerous other problems (it wasn't mine, I was fixing it).

More to the point your "bro's one thta runs really fast" may be great, but it probably cost allot more than 900 USD, and when gaming your processor may be fast, and you may have allot of RAM, but just as important is the quality of the graphics card in it.

Just be warned, a fair few people in WG know what they're talking about, so make sure if you post something you know what you're talking about.

Just be warned, a fair few people in WG know what they're talking about, so make sure if you post something you know what you're talking about.

well i dont want a "pro" gamer laptop

just something casual gaming
a good graphics card, speed for downloads and thats it

2GHz and 2gb ram, i could live with.
I running a PC that started with 512 and i upgraded to 1gb (which i now consider a waste of money, should have just waited and bought a new comp)

i found some rly decent laptops on frys.com
(an electronics store)

Looking For:

-Dual core (none of that centrino bullshit)
-AMD Turion is a plus
-Geforce or ATI Radeons, cant fuck with those "Intels" (with this Vaio i have now, i got bad experience with 'cheap built-in graphics cards'

and as for my stance right now, i'm seriously considering this:

http://shop1.frys.com/product/5640921

this looks really legit
$629 USD

So its first choice right now if i find something better

Thx for the help every1, i learned a lot about computers for some reason o n this thread hash.png

Ok... Have it your way Susan.. The new processors will put yours to shame, and really it isn't even a laptop processor that you are talking about, it is a desktop processor... So you are completely off topic by stating this. Your brother may have a nice Vaio, but I can guarantee that he paid more thnt he would have for a different brand with the same specs. You aren't adding any insight to this topic, and are no longer helping in any way. I would like to ask you to please only reply if you can stay on topic and actually offer some sort of help here.

As for the laptop situation, I guess you have decided not to go with a dell, but if you do, I believe you can get a 17'' inspiron for around your range with the specs you want, It really isn't that bad of a computer, It is the one I currently have now... which has much higher specs than the one you are looking for and I only paid $1150 for it.

I'm getting a laptop next week for school.

Ranma posted exactly what I'm getting, a Dell Inspiron 1720.

I'm going for sweeter specs though, 4GB of ram and a larger hard drive. Should do me good.

I looked around online at a bunch of stuff and the Inspiron 1720 definitely seems like one of the best deals.

4 gigs of ram is a waste if you are getting it from the dell website... they do not offer the 64bit os that you need to use all 4... stick with 3

Does it really not make any difference?

4 GB is only $50 more than 3.

Edit: By the way, is it worth it to get the 2.5 ghz processor? It's $125 more than the 2.4.

I still say hold off till the new ones come out. If you still intend on buying one stick with the 2.4, it will work just fine. No need to waste the extra cash.

EDIT: btw, I love my 1720 =)
