Suggestion: Trial Enforcement

By Snowzak on 24/06/2008
As we all know, WG is a clan that can't depend on recruits from other experienced clans to grow, or fill the gap of those who retire.
Thus, we have to train and form pretty much every generation that goes through WG.

For the time that I've been in, and I think I'm not the only one to have noticed the trend, it generally goes like this:

Slump --> Recruit --> Rise --> Inactivity --> Slump

Let's not say we're in the slump yet, but the smell is foul and tickling my nostrils. It got me thinking, how can we break that trend in WG?
Simply during the "Recruit" period.

You'll agree that a good member for WG is an active, volunteer, helpful member, who's up to date with info on the forums, knows a lot of people through IRC, comes to many events etc.

We currently have 40 Trial Guardians in Trial Period. My suggestion is to, from now on, try to ask for a certain proof of readiness: if we have to test people, train people, kick people for inactivity, may as well it be while they are in trial.

How can we do this concretely?
-Apply strict activity requirements to trials (Strict being 1-2 events a week... just enforced strictly)
-Enforce with rigor the trial time limit for Graduation
-Seeing as we're not overflowed with Graduations, I think perhaps an "Abilities Test" should be considered... for example to see if they still get KOed or not.

I don't know if this suggestion is appealing or adequate or even "nice", but meh.

i dont think the KO-test would be very reliable..
since we all got koed once, isnt it today, it will be tomorrow

But you're right, we should test their capabilities at the end of their trial period

Of course the KO test isn't very reliable, but I sometimes see people, when attacked, turn around and attack the pile and not move when not binded, just trying to eat it out... Just a test on the notion of "what to do when piled" in practice wouldn't be bad IMO.

I was thinking yesterday that we had far too many trials who had been here forever.
The main thing I support is enforcing the one month rule. That means if they have not posted a graduation topic within one month of their acceptance, they are gone...nothing else to it. Only exception should be for inactivity posts in the inactivity forum.

You can't test someone on war skills and you can't make it mandatory that they have them though. WG is a clan that is community first, and although many of us love warring, we shouldn't force everyone to love it with us.

As long as they show up to Bind/Tank Practices we will know if they tank or not.

You are definitely not the only one who has noticed this trend. Remember that discussion about a member cap? The whole point of a member cap is to prevent this kind of slump.

Pretty good suggestion though, I agree that if there is any time to kick someone for inactivity, it is during the trial period, especially if as Tmal said they are not making progress to graduation after a month.

I do not really like the idea of an abilities test, for the same reasons as Tmal has stated. We shouldn't be shutting the door on trial members to graduation just because they have a hard time tanking. However, I see no problem with requiring a general warring knowledge event for trial guardians where they are taught the basic stuff such as common commands, hybriding, and tanking, boundaries (I don't think we have experinced this yet, but it would be embarrassing for us if a trial guardian did not know proper bounds and went our during a war). Attendance and effort are required for the event, but people will not be judged based on their warring abilities.

Very true zach, its important we don't let our recrtuiment get hold of the clan. We need good members for a high member count to be worth it.

I think the activity requirement should be stated as 1 month, as it is now, but probably enforce 5-51/2 weeks so that people have a last chance to kick up the activity. After that, they've had it.

As for war skills, they ought to be made to view a warring guide (we should have plenty around on the forums) and know what to do, and hold practices now and then for them to try it out. To be honest, once you've got the theory its not too hard to put it into practice, especially when you're over 100 combat.
