Eugene's Psychology #1

By His Lordship on 25/06/2008
Every so often I will post a topic that explains human nature and the workings of the mind.
It will be delivered in small chunks so you've got time to think about it all.

This week's topic...

Human Personality

This is a chart that details human personality perfectly.

The spectrum of human personality can be divided into two planes.
One for introversion and extroversion, and one for stable and unstable
Every person has a natural state of being.
Usually, most of you will exert characteristics from all over this chart.
But there is one corner where you will lie the most.
To get from one personality type to another takes a little time, and you usually go around the circle when moving from one personality to another.
Bi-Polar people do not go around the circle.
They jump to the other side of the circle almost instantly.

Now here's the really interesting part.
Depending on what your interests are, you will be groomed into your personality type.
If you ever thought you had the ability to easily change your personality, think again.
(Sure you can change your mood, but your default region of personality is extremely hard to change)
If you are over 12 years old, you have already solidified your region.
It will now take you many years if you plan to change.

Oh and by the way your careers tell you about your personalities.
For example, in my field of music... artists in general sit inside the melancholy field. There are those of us who are more stable and those who are unstable.
If you are in engineering or architecture, you're more likely to be in sanguine.

The problem here is, I think I may have bi-polar disorder.
I do agree that as a music I sit in that melancholy field.
But if I am to have any chance at picking up a woman, extroversion is critical.
Funnily enough, leadership is completely opposite my default personality type too.

Based on thorough considerations, I will be visiting a psychologist next week to ensure that I am not bi-polar.

And notice how it is not possible to have an ideal personality. You may think of yourself as "easy-going", "laid back", "sociable"... well you are on the opposite side to "thoughtful", "careful" and "reliable".

I think that's enough for one session.
That's plenty to soak in.
Next time I'll build on this personality model and explain a different model of personality... The Freudian Ego Model.

pretty sure Im a stable introverted, but I have a shit load of different points all around the circle......so who knows....I no im not an extrovert, i suck at talking to people I don't no.

Changed my mind.
Next time I will be talking about Universal truth.
That's more important to talk about and pass on.
It's one of the most important lessons I've ever learned.
And it's a cornerstone of moral wisdom.

Fill me in on your personalities.
Its a little interesting to know.

I think I'm more phlegmatic than anything.

By Kiwi011 on 26/06/2008
Ok my personality-

Sanguine-
Carefree
Easygoing
Talkative
Sociable
But, I suck at starting conversations and talking to someone I don't no.

Phlegmatic-
Calm
Even Tempered
Reliable
Careful
Passive
Controlled

Choleric-
Optimistic
Restless

Melancholic-
Quiet+Unsociable(when ppl i don't no well are around)
Sober
Reserved
Anxious

Basically thats me.

But yea, I can talk to someone I no for a long time, but I suck at going op to people and saying "hi" or introducing myself and initiating conversation. I'm more of the guy that needs someone else to start a convo w/ me.....so i guess i am not very social =/ . You tell me =/

When friends are around, I'll act like a fool, but with ppl i dont no im reserved+quiet

Well, I suppose on that chart I would be Phlegmatic, though usually somewhat close to the center-line.

Somewhat relatedly, with my personality I have found that the Meyer-Briggs test seems to be the best, correctly typing me as an ISTP, which seems to be exactly what I am, if This page is any indication. I can go down that page and relate just about every item to myself positively, so I think I am definitely an ISTP.

You can be all those things at some time or another, but you should lie in one corner more than anything else.

im more sanguine choleric and a taste of meloncholy

By Firelion08 on 26/06/2008
There would be a huge spike towards Choleric, if it weren't for a number of significant other qualities elsewhere, pulling from both Sanguine and Melancholic. I think unstable is accurate. Thanks, Gene. I've been taking a few introduction classes on Psychology, this only further supports my interests.

This is very interesting. This is my best attempt at fitting into the chart:

Black is qualities I have, red is the possible qualities.

I fit mostly into phlegmatic (as you can probably tell by me always thinking deeply into things, and taking middle ground in arguments the majority of the time).

I touch into melancholic, being a pretty quiet person (I have interest in music as well, which might spawn from it), sometimes maybe even unsociaable.

I'm on the opposite side of the scale as well though, because I often have optimistic qualities and do like to be around people a lot of the time.

I pretty much have the exact same thing as kiwi. I've often had an hour long conversation with friends, and can sometimes last forever. I am naturally shy though, and don't like large social events where you have to actively merge and fit in. I often have difficulty finding a topic to talk about, and my body language often protrays poor confidence (such as blinking, and not keeping eye contact with the person i'm talking to).

While at the same time, I'm often referred to as very easy-going and chilled out, I have very few characteristics at the 'unstable' end of the spectrum, and I'm probably more introverted than extroverted.

Oh and I put reliable in red because I am very forgetful and sometimes unorganised (though unorganised isn't completely applicable - I enjoy tidying things after I've left them to be a mess, and I like the idea of sorting sheets into folders, and that sort of thing). My memory is sometimes worse than my dad's, who's 72.

I'd like to look into it in more detail though, it'll be intersting and also useful to know.

Can't wait for more, gene ;D

I lie somewhere between extroverted and introverted on the stable side. However I do have some extroverted unstable characteristics.
