This is my project, halp!
220.01 – Local Area Network (LAN) Design
As a future network consultant, you will be involved in many different types of network analysis and design projects. You will be expected to successfully design a network by carefully analyzing your network needs based on your company mission and goals, information system needs, users, and the context in which the system will be used. The purpose of this activity is to test your ability to successfully design a Local Area Network (LAN).
Objectives
After completing this exercise, you will be able to:
• Identify the number of clients and servers needed for the network and how they interact
• Explore LAN topologies
• Explain LAN hardware needs, clients, components, connections, and configurations
Assignment
You are a network consultant. A new client, Baker & Thomas, has sent you a RFP (Request for Proposal) for the design of a network in their new office. Using the following information, prepare a 4-5 page recommendation for your client with any diagrams included as attachments.
The client is an expanding law office that has grown from 10 people to 25 and need a larger office.
At present they have a small file / print server as well as a machine for each person. They have need for Internet access but must expand it somewhat for the larger staff.
The company currently has:
• 8 Windows based Pentiums with 512MB RAM and 60GB hard drives
• 2 Apple Mac machines for use by the presentation and documentation staff
• 4 machines have attached ink jet printers
• File server supports roughly 500GB of hard disk and also acts as print server for 2 color laser jet printers
• External e-mail service
The company would like:
• Each of its expanded staff and lawyers to be able to share a common database of clients and share applications, rather than each person keeping separate client records and applications locally on his or her computer or file server shared disk area.
• Each employee to have a internal e-mail account
• The ability to share up to 10 laser printers, rather than each person having his own locally attached printer
• The ability to access the Internet to conduct financial research as well as conduct limited web based meetings with clients
• Other recommendations based on your knowledge and experience
• Wireless networking is not being allowed at this time due to security issues so a wireless solution is not permitted
Questions to Consider
• How might the network be laid out to support the company's stated intentions?
• What is the best method for the company to connect to the Internet? (Be sure to include this on your network diagram)
• Be sure to consider the cost effectiveness of your recommendations and provide rough cost estimates where applicable.
Directions
To complete this activity you will need to:
• Create a 5 page recommendation and 1 page minimum diagram page. Include explanation and justification for your proposed solution.
• In your recommendation include an implementation timeline and approximate budget
• Create a network diagram illustrating your recommendation with appropriate labels.
• Your diagram should include the following hardware components:
o Workstations
o File/Print Server
o E-mail Server
o Shared Printer
o Switch & Router
o All connected correctly
