Computer Problem

By Mickey on 05/10/2008
Have no idea how it happend but a file my system needs to run went missing. Avast didn't tell me about a virus, so I don't have one, and I done a boot time scan last week and cleaned all the virus'. I also haven't downloaded anything lately. But still a file went missing.

When I load up my computer, I get to where the Log-on menu should come up, it doesn't.

It's a black screen and my mouse appears, that's all that happens. It's the same with safe mode, the log on screen doesn't load. ANy idea what I should do?

P.S. When the file went missing it said I had to insert XP disk or re-install SP2 or something to fix the problem.

Anyway, can't use my computer now and I have no idea what to do.

I'm at my grans atm so i'll be inactive untill I get it fixed.

Might have been a virus, might have just accidentally deleted something, maybe your virus scanner went crazy and killed something it shouldn't have, who knows. But yea, you're probably just gonna have to take a day and reinstall XP. ><

Sorry, back up your hard drive (take it out and transfer it to another computer, (if you know how, if you don't then either pay someone to do it, or if your too cheap, then accept the fact that your files are gone.))
Then reinstal XP again, it sounds like the only way. You can do it yourself or pay a techi-to do it. Just remember where you put the pin for it. (which you need to use / register XP) Or else, it's gunna cost you alot of money to buy XP again.
Sorry for the one big paragraph.

THIS MUSIC MUST GO.

You can probably do a "repair" install, basically installing XP in the same spot as it was before. This will not format your drive, but make sure you choose that option and don't have it format your drive in windows setup.

did HAL go missing? If you're running XP that bastard of a file sometimes disappears. No HAL = no start.
