Swiftswitch Hack?

By Eregion2 on 06/03/2008
Someone took remote control of our computer a few minutes ago, and there's no question that they gained access through Swiftswitch even though our VNC was password protected (at least that's an educated guess, since the code being written had "app.zybezx" in it). If I hadn't actually been typing when it happened I'm sure it would have ended up somewhere alot more annoying than a forum post (which I'm sorry I lost, someone else might have been able to make something out of it).

Time to go run a few antivirus scans...

Oh ****.

I'd advise contacting Strider about it,
Thanks for the heads up.

Any news on SwiftKit?

Thanks for the update.

Lol, I remember last time swiftswitch was hacked. Must've been at least 4 years ago. I was staying over at a friend's (big#) house at the time and many people were hacked, but i couldnt find out if i was. I was paranoid hash.png Turned out alright though.

Don't know what VNC is. Swiftswitch doesn't seem like a gateway into the computer, but there's people sad enough to turn anything into a hack. Hope the virus is removed. If this happens to someone else with SS, you can establish that SS is the problem.

By Eregion2 on 06/03/2008
At this point, Mak is implying that someone hacked our VNC with the soul intention of making me distrustful of Swiftswitch. Also, I was only active in #wg_lobby so they're the only ones who knew I was online at the time. So, which one of you dastards hacked me? hash.png (jk, if the hash wasn't enough of a giveaway).

Maybe not swiftswitch but IRC, I'm not too sure how safe the IRC networks are or what you can do with them. I know you can use them as a file sharing network and other things like that. However, I'm not sure whether you can actually hack through the connection.

You do give off some of you connection details through IRC but how much, I'm not sure.

By Eregion2 on 07/03/2008
I'm wondering if it was actually the VNC, and then there was some sort of prank program that will identify another program you have running (aka, in this case swiftswitch) and begin typing up stuff involving the location of that program in your computer (I remember seeing "app.zybezx" and "/system32/" etc). Who knows; in any case, I'll download and install swiftkit now that I've disabled VNC.

Technically you can send anything over IRC with the file share ****, viruses included, you just have to accept it first, I know Abs tried sending me a conversation one time. No clue though for SS since I only know that the File Share works on mIRC and other programs a like.

Good luck finding out whats going on.

Ok, first off, a VNC is a remote-control program. It is designed for remote control of a computer over the internet(or your local network).

Swiftswitch is a browser window with some tools around it. Unless there is a huge whole in the browser(like if its using IE6), there is no way it could take control by itself.

IRC is just a simple text protocol - unless your client had a deliberate hole in it, there is no way it could do anything.

I would check that there isn't a security hole in the VNC program/version you were using.

Now, what I am wondering is why you had a VNC server *RUNNING* on your computer, when you were *AT* the computer. If you wanted to connect to another computer from that computer, you don't need the server. If you were remote-controlling the taken-control-of computer at the time, you should have changed the VNC settings to only have one connection at a time.

I think this is a bit fishy - for one thing, come on - when this started happening, why didn't you pull the freaking network cable out?!???
Come on... Be a bit smart here.

edit:
Ok, so your uncle uses the VNC to help you out once in a while. Come on - when its not going to be used, shut the freaking thing down. It only takes a few seconds to start up.

If I may respectfully say, You, sir, are an idiot. You also obviously haven't bothered to read the topic either. If you can't be bothered to actually read the topic and make an attempt to understand whats going on, don't bother posting.

VNC has absolutely *NOTHING* to do with SwiftSwitch. It is a program Eregion2 is using for his own reasons, none of which are related in the least to SwitchSwift or even Runescape.
The only thing related to Runescape in the least was that the person who hacked him was a Runescape member, and someone who knew of our forums.

Respectfully,

Look here, I recognize the young blood there but chill. What's up with that? Did I quote you when I said that? No.

I'm just giving an alternative point of view for people who use Swiftswitch/Swiftkit but don't really know **** about these kind of stuff. The topic title itself can be pretty misleading for those who use it.

I freely admit that I'm technically illiterate; I drew a conclusion for the reasons I stated and quickly tried to warn my friends about it. Stop biting my head off for trying to be helpful. tongue.gif For some reason VNC starts up whenever we start our computer, and it never bothered anything so I rarely bothered to turn it off. And pulling a plug is so archaic ... I just switched the modem off instead. wink.gif

I think you missed this post Robbie; would this be more like what actually happened? I've updated VNC and set it so that it won't start-up automatically anymore, and I'll be changing the password before its used again. I don't do this sort of crap just for fun, I thought there was a serious threat. If you want to imply that that makes me mentally deficient, I doubt anyone will bother to stop you.

I actually saw the quoted post, but um...
First off, the VNC has complete control,
Second, SwiftSwitch is *not* located in /system32/. That is your main windows important-files folder.
Third... I don't see why its so hard to pull up notepad(or another program you can type into), and simply type random technical-looking lines.

Now, knowing that your VNC is running all the time, it wouldn't be hard for someone to simply brute-force the password. It might take days or even weeks, but with plenty of time, its not like it mattered to the hacker.

He or she also could have had access for days before letting you know by doing all this stuff visibly, and could have put a keylogger or something on your computer easily - Also, even if he was just sitting there watching your computer over VNC, it would be horribly easy to see your Runescape PIN(Password however would require a keylogger).
I would suggest you do a virus scan now, just to be safe.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Me9alomaniac, I despise people trying to act like computer illiteracy is OK on the internet - You might be computer illiterate when you first start, but you had better learn some stuff within a couple years, or you are going to get scammed. I am not saying you need to know a programming language or two, but reading and following a guide or two on computer safety is a must, at the very least.

I was really disgusted with this part of your post, and it was the main reason I posted. You mixed real and made up terms, and all but one weren't even used in the conversation. I don't like your attitude here, "Don't want to take the time to learn how to use a real program, or even the terms used with it? Use TIKO, and stay dumb(and hope your browser is more secure than SwiftSwitch)!"
