Windows 7 Beta

By Georgio9 on 15/01/2009
So Microsoft decided to release the beta version of what will be Windows 7.

From what I saw of the pre-Beta version, it should be a decent operating system.

Basically if you don't know, Windows 7 is basically built off of Vista and the Server 2008 operating systems. Pretty much the version of Vista that Microsoft should have released to start with in my opinion.

You can download it here for free if you you're interested.

I'm building a new PC next week.. considering putting this on it. But I think it might be too much of a hassle if I run into some problems. So I might just wait for the full release.. idk.

I have heard its more like vista SP2 (ie. not much better).

In all honesty though.... I will stick with Vista untill this PC is fucked or I sell it, OS' are too expensive to buy legitimately and I don't want to pirate one either.

Meh.... might get the beta when I put a new HDD in just to see what 'the future' is like lol.

What's new...? There's not much difference lol, Vista doesn't really need to get better anyway, I'm pretty fine with it, apart from a random bug or two.

By the way those two guys that are on the Windows 7 Videos, I don't know why, but they piss me off lol. It's their accent, and the white guy's facial expression...o.o

Edit: Only thing that interests me is SkyDrive. That would be damn useful...hmm

My networking teacher already has the full release, meaning the version that is fully tested and they are planning on releasing to the public. He got connections. hash.png He says he's VERY impressed with it and can't wait for it to come out in public. I can't wait either cuz my dad gets them free from his old job as well! biggrin.gif

Join the IEEE as a student for $30 US a year, then you get access to everything microsoft has made except for the Office software suite for free as part of the developers package. So right now, I have access to every OS that microsoft has released for desktops as well as servers, Visio 2007, Visual Studio, all their artsy fartsy things like album organising, and what not.

It's a really good deal, I'm going to get the OS off the IEEE developers site.
Microsoft endorsed with as many product keys as you need.

Hmmm.... I now have a copy of Windows 7 (got it through work where we are testing it for network/server development).

Now I need a new HDD to run it on....

I'm in the same boat with the drive. I kinda need a new hard disk because mines currently full and I don't have alot of things I'm willing to transfer to my external hard drives. I like all of my data to be on my laptop including music. So I think I'm going to get one of the new 320GB 7200rpm seagate notebook drives, then I'll transfer my files to the new drive and install the beta on the old one.

I have heard VERY bad things about the latest Seagate drives (7200.11).

QUOTE
anyone thinking of buying storage for a pc is advised to avoid the Seagate 7200.11 series like the plague, they have fucked up the firmware on them and basically will lock up at some point. It usually happens on restart and causes the drive to go into a busy state, where it can not come out of (still spins sometimes not recognised by BIOS sometimes recognised by BIOS as being 0mB/gB.

Seagate are being proper cocks on this and are denying the existence of the problem to end users, although they have aparently done a recall from dealers and suppliers of certain models in the series. So it looks like there won't be a firmware update for any users any time soon.

Also:

It's the SD15 firmware. Someone mentioned something about a 30-40% unofficial failure rate, great.

I'm probably going to go with WD for my new drive, since there is very little difference in price unsure.gif

By Georgio9 on 18/01/2009
I was looking at the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 drive. I have a 5400.3 drive in my laptop now. As far as I know, there aren't any problems with the Momentus drives.

HD wise - I recently bought a 640GB WD Caviar Black. Best harddisk ever - it is near silent(compared to my very loud 250GB WD drives), 100% stable, haven't run into any errors.

I really recommend it, over a 500 or 1TB model as the price per GB is the lowest around. I got mine of Newegg for $75.

I was actually going to get the same HD for my PC but I got a 500GB for $10 cheaper.

I rethought getting Windows 7 and it looks like I will be getting the 64 bit version as soon as my PC is built. I also plan to have Vista on the same HD.
