Making your Posts look nice

By Useph1 on 18/01/2009
Have you ever wanted to make a post of yours look cool? Well, if you didn't know how to do something, and wished you knew how, you've come to the right place. In this post I will list some basic forum "tags", which are similar to HTML "tags".

Every forum tag will have an opener, any certain type of code in brackets, [tag], and it will end with the same, or similar type of closer, except the closer will always have a forward slash after the first bracket, [/tag].

It is critical to make sure your brackets are facing the right way, you spell everything correctly, and you always close your tags properly.

List of Tags

Bold

This tag will make your text become bold text. This is good for pointing out key words or phrases in your post.

CODE
[b]Text that you want bolded goes here[/b]

Italics

This tag will italicize your text. This is good if you really want to stress something.

CODE
[i]Text that you want italicized goes here[/i]

Underline

The underline tag will underline your text. This can usually replace the 'bold' tag.

CODE
[u]Text that you want underlined goes here[/u]

Strikeout

This tag will cross text out. This can be used creatively, to show that something is not valid or true anymore without erasing it.

CODE
[s]Text to be crossed out[/s]

Font

This tag will change the font of your text. This is good for if you want to make a post look different from our default forum font.

CODE
[font=FONT NAME]Text that you want to have the selected font goes here[/font]

To see a list of fonts that we have available, you can hit the down arrow next to where it says "font" at the top of your post. Then replace "FONT NAME" with whatever you choose.

Size

This tag will change the size of your text. This is good for a title, or something you want to stand out really well.

CODE
[size=FONT SIZE]Text that you want to have a modified size goes here[/size]

Replace "FONT SIZE", with a number between 1 and 23, 1 being smallest font, 23 being largest.

Color

This tag will change the color of your text. This is useful when you want to make something more visually appealing.

CODE
[color=TYPE COLOR HERE]The text that you want to be colored goes here[/color]

To see a list of colors available, hit the down arrow next to where it says "color" at the top of your post. Then type the color of your choosing where it says "TYPE COLOR HERE".

There is also a complete set of colors in another guide, found here.

Hyperlinks

This tag will turn your text into a hyperlink. This is good when you want to include a link in your post, but down want to just copy and paste the direct address.

CODE
[URL=The link of the Website goes here]The text that will become the hyperlink goes here[/URL]

Images

This tag is used for placing an image into your post.

CODE
[IMG]The direct image link goes here[/IMG]

Quoting

This tag will allow you to turn your text
QUOTE (Useph1)
into a quote.
This is useful when you want to neatly separate your own writing from something someone else wrote.

CODE
[quote=PERSON YOUR ARE QUOTING]Quoted text goes here[/quote]

To include the person your are quoting is optional. If you just want to quote someone or something but do not wish to insert a name simply make the opener tag [quote].

Listing

This tag will allow you to
  • create
  • a
  • list.
CODE
[list]
[*]First list item
[*]Second list item
[*]Final list item[/list]

You may add as many items to your list as you wish, simply begin each new item with it's own line starting with [*].

Displaying code

This tag will allow you to type an entire
CODE
tag without it working.
This is useful for when you want to show somebody else how to use a tag (I used this tag in this guide).

Due to an error, I cannot type this tag in code tags. All you do is surround your text with "[ code]" and "[ /code]" tags. Note that you have to remove the space between the first bracket and the first part of what is inside it.

Combining Tags

It's very easy to combine tags. This is useful when you want to make something extremely appealing, or really stress something.

All that is required is to put each tag opener right next to eachother, and each closer right next to eachother. For example if I wanted to make something bold and italicized I'd type this:

CODE
[b][i]This text will be bold and italicized[/i][/b]

If you have any questions about any tags, feel free to pm me on the forums or in IRC.

Enjoy tagging up your posts!

Great so that is how the stuff in my intro and graduation went in. Thank you for your guide and thanks again to Joe for showing me how to fill in needed data though at the time it was all a blur.
