You know, you guys really don't know what you're talking about. It certainly hasn't been a bed of roses with any other president of our generation. In 4 years, you'll be saying the same thing about Obama. Of course, I'm looking at this from an entirely different angle than the rest of you, which shouldn't be a big surprise. I give Bush alot of credit because if it were me in the Presidency, there would be two new lakes in this world....Lake Afghanistan and Lake Iraq.
By Eregion2 on 20/01/2009
Hindsight makes everyone a Nostradamus. Remember when the Clinton administration left, and stole the 'W' off every keyboard in the White House on the way out?

Too bad they can't do something like that for Obama just to be cheeky, they'd get pissed on by the media.

i'm just curious, you don't have to answer it if you don't want to.
Right now I am more on the side of those who want to continue but what i also know that the reasons that were given up to 80ish per cent bullcrap but still....the other thing I know that if I was an american like you are and MY country would be warring them i would definetaly be against it.
i just want to know how you think about it.
By Abmanju on 20/01/2009
I for one, liked Bush as president of America.
A few years ago, I thought he was stupid, but he's actually a pretty good guy.
I think everyone just hates him because he looks stupid, and the fact that everyone says "Bush is a crap president" spreads from person to person.
It's the same with Tony Blair for UK XD, we always had times where we'd just flame Tony Blair for the heck of it, but when his 10 years ended, we missed him

But anyway, GL to Obama! I think this should be quite interesting.
Lmao @ Ubg's post.

QUOTE |
No matter what your political convictions are this is an eye opener.
David Letterman, on President Bush. (Surprising)
David Letterman wrote this; it's the David we don't often see.... As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.' 'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right? The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, "'What are we so unhappy about?'
A. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?
B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?
C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year? E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state. F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter? G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either. H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter; to take you to the hospital. I. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. J. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family, and your belongings. K. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss. L. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers. M. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy. Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here. I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?
Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.
Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable" discharge after a few days in the brig. So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans? Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!
Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'
-David Letterman |
TL;DR version: Shut the hell up and quit bashing the man for not catering to your every whim and thank God for all the good things we do have.

Bam, from my military background, I can say this and say it honestly...I will do whatever the President says, when he says to do it. That's my job and that's the job of countless other VOLUNTEER people who fight day in and day out for the freedoms of America. Do I want to be over there, yes and no. Do I agree with why we're there?? It don't really matter if I agree or not. It's MY brothers and sisters in arms who are dying for a cause we believe in. We weren't forced to sign the dotted line when we enlisted. It was what we wanted to do with our lives. To give back to those that have served, and died, before us. To continue the legacy as the best damn country on this Earth.

Military is all arse holes? This country wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the military, show some respect.
He isn't after one person, he is on the top of the lsit yes, but that list is very, VERY long. And no president would start a war with no purpose, and most certainly not just because they like war.
As for myself, I'm a conservative, but I don't think Bush was great by any standards. Yet I don't think he was nearly as bad as what people made him out to be.
Yes I agree with the war in Iraq, but that's only because Saddam was killed somewhere in the ballpark of 600,000 people during his reign. He needed to be stopped. Whether the WOMD claims were true or not, idk. I don't think however that they were just made up like some conspiracy happy people do. I do think we could've sped things up a little bit more while still getting the job done over there though. But oh well, you gotta deal with what your given.
I probably wouldn't have voted for Obama, but he seems like a good guy, I'm sure he'll do just fine and I hope he does. Good luck!
By David on 20/01/2009
As a child of a US Diplomat, I can relate to Matt's post. I get to see the USA from a totally different point of view. Last spring break I was in Paris for a week. I went to the Rodin museum and a group of American women sat down near the table I was sitting at with my father and little brother. All those women did was bitch an moan about other things. How the clerk didn't tell them there wasn't any coffee, how the people are so rude to them, it went on and on. I could only help but think, "Did you even try to speak their language? Did you even say "I'm sorry, I don't speak French, but could you please tell me...," or did you just walk up to people and expect THEM to speak English to you, a tourist? That little experience basically encapsulates why the rest of the world is always ragging on the USA, because we really are a bunch of spoiled brats. We expect EVERYONE to bow to our every whim. We want lower taxes, so we bitch and moan about that. We want out of a war, so we bitch an moan about that. We want this or we want that, we bitch and moan. Why? Because it works. That's not to say that sometimes it isn't needed, but really, for everything we're unhappy about? Grow up.
Given all that, I'm still not pro-Bush. I was personally happy to see him finish up his term and have Obama take over. I didn't agree with anything Bush did, nor do I agree with many of the things he's praised for. A popular response from someone who is a Bush supporter is "Well, since he took over, we haven't been attacked." Yeah, I know. Do you really think that those attacks are planned overnight? That's why. It's not like they woke up that day and decided to do that, it was coordinated. The pilots were trained to fly that low. They had to think through what type of material to use for their fake bombs to scare the passengers on the planes. They had to find a proper material for their makeshit knives so they wouldn't set off the metal detectors. They didn't just throw that stuff together the night before and hope for the best, it took careful planning. That's just one topic though.
On the topic of the war itself, I am not a supporter of the war. I am however a supporter of the troops. I would rather the war not go on, but seeing as it is going on, I'll support the troops that have to die for it. Like Rick said, it's a completely voluntary duty. Rick's mentality is 100% spot on. That's the way the military is. In a very simplistic view the military doesn't think, it does. If the President says attack, they will attack, if he says stop they stop. No questions asked. While living in Newport RI, my dad attended the Naval War College. He was able to converse with members of all the service branches in an environment where they were free to express their views, namely their feelings of unhappiness about the war. What was so interesting was that despite their personal opinions, if they were ordered at the very moment to go to Iraq, they would do it. They could be mid-sentence, saying how they feel the war was initiated for personal gain and they would go.
I'll post more, because I need to sleep...

This topic was meant as a joke, and note it's in a public forum, so really any flaming after this I'll lock it.
My input though, after reading what Matt said, it's true Bush wasn't a terrible president, but I don't exactly think he was exactly good either. Our economy is shit, my family had planned a vacation over Christmas break but we decided to cancel it because the prices to travel are just ridiculous.. gas is ridiculous.. On the topic of gas, did Bush even look into alternative fuel? I'm not a political expert here but from what I've seen on the news he didn't..
Hopefully Obama can fix the current messes

Matt, that is a disappointing you would post such garbage. That is not David Letterman, it is an Internet hoax.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/hitnail.aspWe take alot for granted in this country, it is true, however my problem with the hoax article is its intent. It is trying to get people to accept bad leadership and abandon their civic duty to hold our leaders accountable for their actions. What hypocrisy, I cannot think of any better way to take our freedoms for granted than by not using them, and I cannot think of any better way to take our prosperity for granted than by using it as a sedative for political inaction and indifference. I really could not care less if someone passes me off as ungrateful or a whiner, we have freedom of speech in this country, and that is not something I am going to take for granted.
I wish Bush a happy retirement on his Texas ranch.

I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE SAY WE INVADED AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ FOR OIL. THAT'S ABOUT AS IGNORANT AS TYPING IN CAPS FOR EMPHASIS. Are we pumping free oil out of Iraq? NO! Now let's move on with our collective lives please!
By rachellove9 on 21/01/2009
I hate TV, I think the news is so slanted that you will never know what the truth is. The newspapers aren't much better. So who can you rely on for the truth and to know what is going on? I ask friends and family who work in DC. I talk to friends who serve in the military. I see what the prices of milk, eggs and gas are. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the media has its own agenda. Don't rely on the media to form your opinions.
If I could change any law in the US, I would change the Senate and House of Representatives length of service. Those jobs were never meant to last a life time and line the pockets of men with the American people's money.
Bush did an okay job, not the best. I still have many things that I can be thankful for. I hope the new president has great success.
I loved Laura Bush for first lady and the new first lady has a good fashion look. So it will probably be an interesting 4 years. She even shops on the internet.

Granted some of that is Bush's fault, but the problem is that everybody blames everything on Bush directly, he's not the only person in government.
This economic crapping was bound to happen, I don't think it would've been much different no matter who was in office.
By Rick Hamm on 21/01/2009
It's very easy for you kids to point the finger at the person in charge of the country, however, you're missing out on something very important. While he is the President, he still has to gain the confidence in Congress in order to do anything...including declare war.
I'll put it in terms that most of you meatheads will understand....Lordy declares war on other clans and we get our asses kicked, or let's just say we do win...what exactly are we fighting for here? Prestige, power, money? So, if I take your sentiments on this subject and say that Lordy sucks as a leader because we fight in pointless wars and he don't do anything to help our economy, you'd blast me to hell and back, correct?
I'm sorry to use that as an example and it's not the way I personally feel, however, I think it sends the message perfectly.
By Mmangler on 21/01/2009
It is clear that people have definite opinion about former President Bush. History will eventually judge his actions. In my opinion, he should have worked harder for a diplomatic solution before taking unilateral military action. However, the situation in Iraq demanded action in a manner similar to Hiltler's actions in Europe prior to WWII. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.
Before you ask, no, I do not think the war was right but remember hindsight is 20/20. Absent, the action taken by President Bush how many more innocents would have paid the price.
And Rick thank you for serving...

Apologies Karl, it was in an email from a family member, so I didn't research behind it.
The point is not to teach acceptance of bad leadership, but to keep everything in perspective. Yes, you might be going through hard times now, but you should still step back and be thankful for what you DO have. We ARE truly blessed as Americans, and generally speaking, take that for granted.

Nothing wrong with an intelligent debate and exchange of opinions. Short of the few "LOLOL G'bye BUSH," comments the comments being said here are not aggresive in any way an are simply painting a picture of our own opinions. We're expressing them in a thoughtful manner as well.

War is never a good thing, no matter who its with.
See the thing is, its not like its 2 armies, fighting one another head on. The terrorist, wont do that, because we out number, and can out power them also.
Tony Blair, is/was a retard, (nothing against our American brethren) but he shouldnt have gotten us sooo wrapped in, in the american's fight. Only reason were now in shit, is because of us sticking with them.
But i'm extremely grateful to all that serve/have served/will ever serve, for there country. My best mate is a british marine. He's out in Afghanistan, at the minute. And im worried, Every time you hear about another marine dieing, i think its him.
He'll be back.
clubbing time.

Well, I don't consider solider's terrorits for one thing, because they in no way try to instill fear into the civilian population on purpose. And the number of Iraqi civilians that have died throughout the course of the war range from 8,000-100,000. The Number killed under Saddam's regime was in the ball park of 600k, He used chemical weapons against whole entire villages. There was a genocide going on.
I fail to see a reason not to stop this, very unfortunate that civilians died, that is a horrible by-product of war, but it happens and will always happen in war. And they don't name who those "civilians" were, I wouldn't doubt half of them were insurgents in civilian clothing.

I wasn't talking about soldiers, i mean if we leave iraq etc, it just gives them all the time and freedom to plan future attacks on our countries, would you rather that?

Oh wait I misinterpreted you I guess

.
So wait, my brain isn't working right. Are you saying we should stay in Iraq longer, or leave?
By Billy on 21/01/2009
We should stay longer, if we leave now, it will just mean they can have the ability to prepare better, and alot more damage will be caused to us, they will be free to bomb anything they can. The intelligence we recieve from iraq is what stops it atm.
Basically its too late to pull out, the terrorrists are pretty pissed atm.
