As a problem recently, new members have been confused on finding important things around our forums. Although we make it extremely easy, some people are just... slow...
Anyway, I kind of came up with this idea.

The first thing would be to remove the top site links from under the header, they're already in "Links" tab anyway.
It would to look something like this:



Not that design, LOL, that's just the blueprint.
We can think of some cool background that matches the forum.
They would link to that specific topic.

I agree that could work, although I guess it's too much to ask people to look in the "links" tab on the news box?
It may look a bit.... clumsy if we have buttons there like that... oh I dunno i'm sure Robbie could make them blend in

Sounds awesome. Simplicity is good.

Whenever I accept an application I send them links and tell them where to look and I send another with the same kind of info for my mentees. We could get other mentors to do the same thing, it'd break the ice and get them talking with their mentees right away.
