2005 Anniversary

The 2004 Anniversary was a series of RuneScape 2 events held to celebrate the 1st birthday of the Wilderness Guardians.[1] It consisted of 18 different events held over the course of 7 days in December of 2004 and January of 2005, with the main body of events taking place from the 19th to 24th of December.

Preparations

Plans for a series of events to celebrate WG's first birthday were being discussed by His Lordship as early as mid-October of 2004.[2] On 23 November, the events were announced on the S4 forums, with the initial plan being for the Anniversary to run for seven consecutive days starting from 11 December.[3] However, several members replied stating that they would be unable to attend due to school. After a poll to determine what to do with the schedule[4], the majority of events were delayed by one week, but the first planned day (with the Veteran War) remained on the 11th.[5] The final day was planned for 24 December, but was postponed to 7 January 2005 due to a disappointing turnout for day 6, which led to a heated discussion about activity on the forums.[6]

For the main week of celebrations, His Lordship advertised the Anniversary publicly on the Rune Village fansite.[7] Due to the difficulty of acquiring large stocks of items in an era before the Grand Exchange, he also put out a request for donations from WG members. These were mainly to be used for event costumes and drop party rewards, and several members offered whatever items they had in surplus from their banks. Apart from coins, there were large amounts of skilling products (fish, ores, arrows, etc.), and some valuables such as rune items.[8]

Day One

Day One took place on 11 December 2004[9] and consisted of 3 events: The Veteran War, The Firefest, and The Clan Members Drop Party (F2P Edition). Some clan members went on to host an impromptu PK trip afterwards, though this was not considered an "Anniversary event" and no screenshots were added to the website gallery page.[1]

The Veteran War

Main article: Veteran War

WG's first Veteran War (a reenactment of the clan's first PK trip) was held - notably with some non-veterans using ranged or magic (rather than being melee-only, as has been the case from 2008 onward), and the defeated veterans grouping in Lumbridge as the "Lumbridge Club".

The Firefest

A firefest was held in Falador, followed by a public drop party for all players in the area. The total value of items dropped is unknown, but several rune items were included.

The Clan Members Drop Party (F2P Edition)

A private drop party for WG members was held in an underground cellar in Varrock, with over 1,000,000 coins worth of items dropped.

Day Two

Day Two took place on 19 December[10] and consisted of 2 events: The Duelling Contest and The Castle Wars.

The Duelling Contest

A Duel Arena event was held where clan members could duel with each other. His Lordship handed out prizes such as dragonstone amulets, rings, and bowstrings to anyone who could defeat him.

The Castle Wars

Several rounds of the Castle Wars minigame were played, and the Saradomin team won every time.

Day Three

Day Three took place on 20 December[11] and consisted of 4 events: 3 under the theme of Wildy Fr00bs, and The Fancy Dress Contest.

Wildy Fr00bs

WG adopted a theme of "Wildy Fr00bs" (a "noobier" version of the clan), and members wore a set of black wizard robes. The events were:

  • The Parade in Falador: WF performed emotes in Falador centre, and encouraged other nearby players to join
  • The Congo[sic] Line: WF circled the F2P area of RuneScape in a large conga line (erroneously called a "congo line")
  • The Marketplace Disruption: WF spammed Varrock centre with offers to sell non-existent "poo"

The Fancy Dress Contest

A contest for the best in-game outfit was held at the Jolly Boar inn north of Varrock, which was won by Palidore for his Doctor's Costume (front-left, 3rd screenshot).

Day Four

Day Four took place on 21 December[12] and consisted of 2 events: The Photo Shoot and The Members Drop Party (Public).

The Photo Shoot

An event to acquire impressive-looking screenshots was held at various locations throughout RuneScape, with members cosplaying different themes for each:

  • "The Marriage" at the Monastary (featuring a random player who was considered the priest)
  • "The Nerd Club" in the Varrock Palace library
  • "The Dark Lords" at the stone circle south of Varrock
  • "The Palace Sentinels" atop Lumbridge Castle

The Members Drop Party (Public)

A public drop party was held at the Falador party room. Many valuable items including rune and dragon equipment were dropped, as a gift returned to the RuneScape community. WG also received happy anniversary wishes by many non-clan players attending.

Day Five

Day Five took place on 22 December and consisted of 2 events: Hide and Seek and Kalphite Queen.

Hide and Seek

An in-game hide-and-seek event was held, in which members had to work together to assemble clues and locate His Lordship in game. His Lordship gave away around 500,000 coins worth of Rune items to the winners. The screenshots below show his hiding places, and the last screenshot shows WG regrouping after an hour of searching.

Kalphite Queen

A PvM/boss event was held where WG attempted to kill the Kalphite Queen. The event was described as an "interesting" experience: several deaths occurred, though no one lost anything of great value and the increasing difficulty from dwindling numbers was said to be quite enjoyable.

Day Six

Day Six took place on 23 December and consisted of 3 events: Da Lordy Code, The King Black Dragon, and The Fishing Trawler.

Da Lordy Code

The Clan Quest event was held, in which His Lordship gave out a starting clue to members, and using an in-game chart, watch, and sextant, members had to find an in-game location. There, they would obtain a password to unlock a section of the forum which held the next clue. His Lordship's ultimate location was the first floor of the Varrock Palace, and those who found him received a rune armour set as a prize.

The King Black Dragon

WG members exchanged gifts and prizes in Edgeville bank, before a PvM/boss event at the King Black Dragon (KBD) was held - several kills and some decent loot were acquired.

The Fishing Trawler

A spontaneous Fishing Trawler minigame event was held at the request of members present, and two rounds were completed successfully.

Day Seven

Day 7 took place on 7 January 2005[13] and consisted of 2 events: The Iron War and The Clan Members Drop Party (P2P Edition). A KBD trip with TS was also planned, though no screenshots of this have been found, if it was held. Following these events, His Lordship declared the anniversary finished.[1]

The Iron War

A multi-clan fun war was held at Annakarl, involving WG, The Synergy, Fear, Legends Legion, and The Sabres. All players wore iron armour and used iron weapons. The fight went well until it was crashed by ZeonicForce, whom the allied clans were extremely displeased with.

The Clan Members Drop Party (P2P Edition)

A private P2P drop party for WG members was held upstairs in Camelot Castle, with over 3,000,000 coins worth of items dropped.
