Fear (sometimes stylised as FEAR) was a RuneScape 2 clan founded by Mikdan3 and Wyatt X in 2003. Although initially hostile towards the Wilderness Guardians, a successful alliance between the clans was formed in December 2004 which lasted until June 2006, just before Fear's closure.
Formation and Rivalry
Fear was founded by Mikdan3 and Wyatt X in March 2003. The clan opened with a considerable amount of success, and rapidly made their way up the ranks of F2P clans. By the summer of 2004 they were considerably larger and more powerful than WG[1], reaching over 200 members before the end of the year.[2]
It is considered to be coincidental that Fear and WG would amass for their PK trips on the same world, at around the same time.[3] The result of this was several encounters and fights between WG and Fear over the course of summer and autumn of 2004. In the vast majority of fights, WG would be unable to contend with Fear's numbers and strength, though on occasion WG saw occasional victories over Fear with the help of external support, such as from WG's allies The Synergy.[4] Even so, the constant fighting with Fear resulted in significant hostilities being exchanged and a rivalry forming between the two clans, with the disparity in their strength created a growing sense of anger and displeasure throughout WG.[5] Despite His Lordship's attempts to engage in diplomatic talks and negotiate peace with Fear, fighting between the clans continued throughout September and October of 2004.[6]
In late October 2004, WG member Mochacho456 began plans to establish a team of high-levelled players with the sole intention of becoming a force capable of fighting Fear. Known simply as The Uprising, plans for the team were approved by His Lordship, and would have been supported by WG's allies - Syn and The Scorpions - in a battle intended to have occured in mid-November.[7] However, it is believed that these plans and the central issue of Fear were reprioritised as a result of hostilities and WG's first planned war against the Rune Outlaws taking place in November.
Alliance
On 24 December 2004, following the events surrounding Write2brandy and WG's subsequent declaration of war and call for public support, Mikdan3 posted on the WG forums to address the relationship between WG and Fear. He revealed that Fear had also undergone several hardships including the deletion of their forums, and the loss of over 13,000,000 coins in value from the clan's bank account. Rick Hamm had spoken to Mikdan3 requesting Fear's assistance against RO[8], and Mikdan3 apologised for previous hostilities between WG and Fear, and accepted the proposed offer of an alliance. WG and Fear became allies on Christmas Eve of 2004.[9]
The first record of an allied event involving WG and Fear was an iron war held as part of the final day of WG's 2004 Anniversary celebrations on 7 January 2005.[10] Fear took part in the 5-way battle along with The Sabres, The Synergy, and Legends Legion. Though the war was crashed by ZeonicForce, it was considered a success by members of both clans.[11] WG and Fear would go on to have several allied PK trips over the course of 2005, and while some instances of WG members occasionally being killed by Fear occurred[12][13], the allied trips often resulted in larger fights and were seen as overall positive and successful.[14][15] Fear also supported WG in their third war against the Rune Outlaws in late April 2005.
On 1 October 2005, 'The' Clan - the second-oldest clan in the game - offered WG a war, which WG accepted on the condition that Fear would be allowed to support them. The war had two weeks' preparation, and took place on 15 October 2005.[16] WG and Fear brought around 220 members, while 'The' brought around 140.[17] Despite the advantage in numbers, the war unfortunately ended in a defeat for WG and Fear - though all three clans subsequently gained an increase in members and reputation as a result, and all were overall pleased with the war.
Allied raids between WG and Fear continued throughout 2005 and into 2006, with WG and Fear taking part in a large cluster in February 2006 under the moniker "FG". Believed to be one of the largest cluster fights in history, it involved over 15 clans in a single world, including Damage Incorporated and Dark Slayers - the two most powerful F2P clans of the day. A 15v15 miniwar between WG and Fear was also held in March 2005. Unfortunately, WG were forced to compete against their allies Fear and The Sabres in a fansite-run clan tournament sometime in early 2006, which is the last mention of Fear in WG's history prior to their closure.
Phobia

On 1 January 2005, Fear opened a junior clan, Phobia.[18] The junior clan was the product of a merge between two other small clans - Runite Crusaders and Fear Followers. Phobia was designed to be Fear's junior clan, but would have its own leadership and host wars to retain the sense of individuality its parent clans had. The first leaders of Phobia were 2991741 and Madhasan90.
Phobia had the advantage of numbers from the start as a result of the merge, and would win several wars against other junior clans such as Soldiers of Anarchy and BlacKnight Cadets. Phobia also defeated Harathoi with a record turnout of 120+ players, making them one of the largest and strongest junior clans of their day.[19] In December 2005, WG and their own junior clan Descendant Guardians fought Fear and Phobia in a fun steel war.
The last recorded activity of Phobia was on 29 April 2006, where they fought Mystic Knights in a 30-minute war. Despite ending in a loss to MK, Phobia was able to pull 165-170 players with five days' preparation.[20] Phobia was replaced as Fear's junior clan by Despair sometime between May and July of 2006[21], though Fear would close before it saw any reasonable success.
Ending and Closure
In or around June 2006, Fear chose to end the alliance with WG. The exact reasons for this are unknown, and it was described in WG's history only as due to many complicated reasons
. WG accepted the ending of the alliance and formed a new alliance with an unrelated clan - Reckoning Day - shortly afterwards.
Fear closed on or around 19 July 2006, though no records of their closing topic(s) have been archived, and the reasons for their closure may be lost to history.[22]
